securing hexayurt with tie down straps?

Post by wendiwoman » Tue Jul 08, 2014 10:10 am

I've always used tape anchors to secure my HY, but lately I've noticed some people using tie-down straps, like these:

Does anyone have opinions on the wisdom of using tie-downs versus tape anchors?

This was my tie-down solution. The ratchet straps and rope halo were pretty fast and secure, I added a second tie-down system using paracord for peace of mind.

I've always used ratchet straps through the tape anchors. Then I metal tape the tape anchor seams. A bit excessive, though it's always worked for me.

So am I understanding correctly that you don't have the straps across the roof? If so, then you are substituting the straps for rope tie-downs, correct?

Is there a particular reason you prefer this arrangement rather than using just straps instead of tape anchors?

And for you and other readers... my HY is an H13, so there is no reasonable way to utilize a rope halo.

i use tape anchors for my h12. I've used ratchet straps for securing things on the roof of my ride. I always have trouble getting them started :?
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Correct. This is on a H6, so I could easily use the halo method-- I just never found it necessary. Big thing is to cover the tape anchor seams with metal tape or some other covering so the sun doesn't destroy the glue. 6" bi-filament tape isn't UV treated.

The ratchet straps can be easily tightened whereas rope requires knowledge of knots. Knotty Knowledge... sounds like a kinky theme camp.
Also, the tape anchors seem more structurally secure as they are coming off of the roof cone seams. Might be worth bringing the gear to do both in case this year ends up being windy.

I love the Tie-Down / Rope Halo method. It has worked wonderfully.

One thing I will do it put pool noodles around the strap at the point it runs over the edge of the roof cone toward the playa. this does two things. 1) it keeps the tie-downs from cutting into the yurt and, 2) it keeps the straps from making a ton of humming noise in strong wind events.

Tape anchors always seemed too complicated and left potential for breaking/annoyance. Rope Halo/ratchet straps are a great move.
