Good Morning Bar.
I voted on my way in this morning.
Rain rain rain in Abilene today....the city was not designed to handle a lot, so streets are already flooding.

:coffee: :coffee: :coffee: all around.

I am looking forward to having 2 out of 3 siblings in town this week end. The 24fps Short Film Fest starts Friday - should be fun.

Hey, LCN!! how's things?
Thought of you today, I had to build up steel to make a new end on a tire machine part, sort of remembering, something from a forging lesson at some time: as I added layers, I hit them a lot with a hammer, to shape, and "vibrate" the steel........I seem to remember from somewhere the vibration as the metal cools make is tough or hard?
I added layer up on later to get the shape, hammered, so hardly had to grind at all.........
Thoughts?

Hi UJH!!
gettin some rain up there?

hammering it will compress it and make it harder , heating it back up makes it soft again ( with a slow cool )

yay Elliot! that does sound fun! Are they playing up there at Clearlake?

Hi Lucky!!

Tatonka: I'm not sure I agree with "compressing" when hammering the steel. My thinking is it's more about the vibration and crystal alignment. I hesitate to research it, hoping LCN chimes in.

Ygmir, it's the deformation of the steel that hardens it; bending twisting, hammering, anything that changes its dimensions.
Tatonka is correct about annealing.
What happens on deformation is that the large crystals break into progressively smaller ones. As the crystal structure gets smaller, the metal becomes harder & more brittle.
Annealing causes the small crystals to grow back together & form new big ones, then the metal becomes less brittle & easier to bend.

I'd love to see a pic of your work.

Alright Elliot. LIVE MUSIC IS BETTER. Bumper stickers should be issued.

Morning bar friends! Thanks for the coffee. I found a three year old sealed can of "chock full o'nuts" ground coffee in the garage. Keep? Emergency supplies? Any opinions?

Typically a quench hardens the steel. When annealing with the intent of softening the steel, a slow cooldown is preferred, sometimes even a gentle ramp down in an oven.
This varies greatly with different types of steels and when working with other metals even more.

I was not arguing the annealing, I was arguing about "compressing" the steel. I know what you mean about deforming and such, but still feel somewhere I read the vibrating of cooling steel has an effect.

when creating chisels and such on my forge for stone work, I quench in used motor oil, in degrees watching the color of the steel as it cools and quenching at certain color/temp points.

Learn something new every day.
The search terms "vibration quenching steel" produce gobs of technical papers.
A quick scan suggests they are trying to control rate and uniformity of liquid quenching, but I didn't really zoom in.
Drop forging was always supposed to be one of the quality way to make stuff, maybe the vibration from hammering changes the microstructure in useful ways.

I've been interested in forging since seeing the youtube videos of the guy making viking sword replicas - cool stuff. google "serpent in the sword"

yeah, I wish I had more time for "forging" and such. I really feel I can "talk" to the metal and get it to do what I want, but, it takes a lot of time and experience, so, just bits and pieces for me.
I sort of extrapolated/made up a plate shrinking technique when building the HOfstove™, to keep the 3/8" plate cooking surface plate flat under heat and cool cycles. I love that sort of stuff.

Getting ready to head over to Oakland and the Uptown Nightclub to see Dick Dale, KING of the Surf Guitar. Just wanted to check in and show I ain't some one note johnny. Tomorrow I head up north for another playdate for my foster dog Teddy. The hippie chick who plans to adopt has already picked out a new non-slave name, Dedgi. She wants to adopt on Nev 22, the new moon. This weekend go see Jeff Bridges and the Abiders play here in SF. On the woman front, the struggle continues. Shower, shave and over the bridge to the show. Night, good folks of eplaya.
