Eplaya Camp 2005
holy shit, you guys.
you have me sitting here considering leaving my bm job to do this.
first off, i have to say that it's pretty darn hard to get a spot on the esplanade unless you have tenure and something pretty damned impressive to offer the community.
that said - the idea of setting up shop in an actual bar on the playa and bringing all of this to life is just, well, titillating to be honest.
tell ya what - if a bunch of the barflies promise to bring in at least one of the virtual objects they have contributed to The Bar...i'll do it.
and if Sensei delivers anything even resembling that sign he *made*, i'm in for sure.

I'm going with samtzu here. The first thing to plan on doing is getting yourself, and whatever you absolutely need there. The rest of it , well we have roughly 9 and a half months, which translates to 40 weeks, or 282 days, to figure out how to get it there.samtzu wrote:To me, this is the whole point: those who can provide goods (Sofas, bar, shade, art) do so. Those who can provide cash for booze, consumables, etc,; do so. Those who can provide time to man (or woman) the bar, do so. Those who can provide ides for the whole guacamole, do so. As you all know, this is what we do on the eplaya every day.Zulegoona wrote:I have to find a job in order to know if I'll have the money to go not to mention the time off. If I ever do get my shit together I would love to sign up for the camp, but I can't commit to anything yet.
That of course won't stop me from throwing in my two cents worth, before then.
This is the conduit for our collective energy.... lets look at it that way, and we all know that it will work! (Shit! Shades of Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein!!)
Tisha, you'd think if we had enough people committed to this, as a representative of this site we might be able to get a decent location, even if it isn't right on the esplanade, maybe up a couple of slots in a side street. Who knows?

I most certainly do DVD. I'm surprised that if he isn't going to BM that he is hanging out here.
Oh well, that sucks... not that he hangs out here, but that he doesn't expect to go anymore.
You hear that Rob, I'm talking some lipity lip smack about you.
One less entertaining person to track down. Bummer.

mixology
I was a casino bartender for over a decade and can attest to the wisdom of serving only one drink to a large crowd... seldom the case. Good mixology takes time, tools, and skill or some pretty strong resistance to the gag reflex among patrons. Also, it allows a pre-mix to be set up in advance so that if the hottest looking participant wants to work behind the plank it does not end up a very cute disaster.Zulegoona wrote:It would be a good thing to talk with Captain Goddammit, and Doc pyro about what is going to be needed for the bar. Anybody out there know how to manufacture and run a still? =) Your right Zule, this part of the concept is going to require some relatively substantial funds. It's a good thing you bar people are more experienced in these lines, because we're going to need a lot of input on this front.Zulegoona wrote:It would be a good thing to talk with Captain Goddammit, and Doc pyro about what is going to be needed for the bar. Most of the bars at BRC seem to stick to one drink, usually some unspecified concoction served punch style, and only during certain hours of operation. It would be nice to have more than one alternative drink. Another thing is that if it is open 24/7 we are going to be inundated with thirsty burners. =)

Macdonalds has made it big by keeping it simple... We can keep it even simpler.... This is a good idea, thanks MJFM... we'll probably be doing something just like this....Mister Jellyfish Mister wrote:I was a casino bartender for over a decade and can attest to the wisdom of serving only one drink to a large crowd... seldom the case. Of course, the regulars can bring their own and be served... or, like in Tisha's bar... serve themselves.

Well now shucks tonytohono, this would plumb be illegal- now wouldn't it? Of course, the theory behind a still- quite oddly enough- if VERY similiar to the oil extractors sold at home brew shops up here in Oregon. Steinbarts sells oil extractors that, if you happen to live in New Zealand, could be used to make distilled alcohol.tonytohono wrote:Anybody out there know how to manufacture and run a still? =)

It's only illegal if it's done illegally, right? I didn't say bring your still to BM, or even suggest we ought to do such a thing as manufacture alcohol. Wink wink. I was just asking. Total innocense.Rob the Wop wrote:Well now shucks tonytohono, this would plumb be illegal- now wouldn't it?tonytohono wrote:Anybody out there know how to manufacture and run a still? =)
here's what i was thinkin' - and pretty much what worked at the bar i worked at our decom and is pretty much the deal at my usual village bar -
you do have one 'usual' beverage that you make pitchers of ready-made (bloody mary's at bm and 'playa sunrises' at decom), and you keep a few other basics & mixers (that not every yahoo that walks up needs to know are available) like whiskey, vodka, tequila, juices, soda water, coke. plus, when you put the call out for donations, you never know what'll show up. we're not gonna turn stuff away just cuz it doesn't go in our 'main' drink, now are we??
at this point, however, i'm more concerned with a structure and materials for said structure - 4x4 posts, a big ass tent, rebar, rope, plywood bar, coolers, trash cans, burn barrel, tables & chairs, cups...
...thinking about drink recipes at this point feels a little bit like putting the old cart before the horse...

Last year was BM's last chance to impress Rob and it didn't rise to the occasion. Let him have his break. Either he's gonna be back or he won't. Life is that way. If we ask real nice maybe he'll provide a cardboard cut out dressed in drag and we can have a camp function of glueing on fur.DVD Burner wrote:Rob has already said that this year was his last BM but I dont belive him. Here's the solution... get a handheld CB radio. One of those 40 channel ones that works for miles, none of this motorola walkabout pieces of shit. We'll have the channels we are going to use laid out later. We'll find you, even if you are drunk off your ass and have lost all sense of direction.buckethead alien wrote:I keep having this waking nightmare of sleeping through the M'n'G and then NEVER FINDING ANYONE.
O.K. many responses
first, GE, I was referring to DVDs post that he's O.K. with chicks slapping him
now, on to the business at hand
Esplanade I have not had a problem getting it. I am casting about for my thing to do my thing with next year but if I do it in Eplaya camp I feel pretty confidant you'll get the spot you want. I have, according to various org types, a good reputation for delivering what was promised, cleaning up, being very organised, and most importantly, not giving them any attitudde along the way. Even if I don't throw in with y'all I can help with suggestions on the process of getting your spot.
power is someone gonna provide it?
drinks you're on the right track. What we did that was totally fire and forget was get a couple of the 5 gallon, gatorade type dispensor thingies you see at sporting events. 10 minutes of labor for the mixing allows you to serve hassle free for hours. Just gotta make sure you are clear on your proportions cuz it's hard to fine tune when your working with that scale
structure you can save a tremendous amount of weight and cost by working with steel cable. Use 4x4s as posts and attach and anchor everything else with cable. Lightweight, easy to do, and very elegant. No saggy, flappy tarps.
missing the MnG I hear ya BH. I have yet to make one

The real nightmare you should be having is sleeping through the M'n'G and then seeing the pics three months later and realizing--THOSE SHINY TROUSERS WENT WITHOUT YOU!!!!! Esplanade Greased wheels run much smoother, and Good Will is an excellent lubricant. If Stuart can convice the PtB that we are serious and responsible, it would really be nice to get on the front row. Even a row or two back near the Center Camp would be nice, but lets shoot for the front row. I am very much into Leave No Trace, so I am more than willing to make sure that this place is left spotless ASAP. Count me in on that.
Power I'm thinking solar, with low power LED lighting, and maybe a generator for the DJ (Sandwichman? Wadda' ya' say) and the live bands. I would want to leave a generator just for that, for both esthetic and environmental reasons. Any suggestions out there?
Drinks Bingo! (my word of the day) Premixed in large jugs or containers. Two types, period, with maybe boxed wine. If we know someone who can buy the cheapest shit possible in bulk, so much the better. Then, also, the regulars (you know who you are, you alkies) can bring their own and dispense their own.
Structure Again, Stuart is right on. We have to figure on seventy mile per hour winds, even if they don't blow that hard. I had a parachute up this last Burn that didn't even budge in the winds we had because I had good anchors and strong rope. Cable is the best, and we can look to see what we can get.
Name Tags One thing that got me at the Meet N' Greet was that I didn't know a single fucking soul when I first walked up... then someone (maybe me? Dunno') started screaming out "Nametags! Nametags!) and withing a half hour, everyone had one. Let's see if we can set that up ahead of time this year.
Art We're a fucking art community, people. Let's make some art to hang in the bar and place in front of the door. No 'curator' but consensus. I think a nude painting of me above the bar would look good, and have the added effect of keeping the yahoo's away... Actually, it would probably keep most of you away as well... hmmm... lets rethink this....
Meet N' Greet Doc Pyro's meet and greet is great! I really enjoyed the Barbie Death Camp and Wine Bistro. I want to do it again this year. Great fun! I see the bar as an on going meet and greet... with rotating shifts. You may always meet someone there from the eplaya.
Avatars It would be nice to have an avatar board, too.... with your name and one, or more, of your avatars posted above it. It would be a nice decoration.
Okay... let's hear back from y'all....

If you go with DJs and live bands you will get pushed out to the boom boom zone. Basically the last hour on the esplanade. Ear plugs will be a must. In order to get your esp. spot you will need to have visual impact or a high degree of interactivity or both. Solar will not get you your nighttime visual impact (unless it's a lot of solar, and thus a lot of money) and just setting up a bar will not get you any kind of special interactivity. I can deliver both but I need to do a lot of soul searching over the next several months so it's best not to rely on me for your 'weenie on a stick' as we say in the theme park biz.
Cable is cheap. Can be cheaper than rope and has the advantage of not being stretchable. A 250' spool of stainless 1000lb test cable is, if memory serves, around 60 bucks. I had essentially a 50'x9' sail and only had one post give me any issues in the nasties of '04.

this whole pig, minus the screens, is just 6 4x4s and about 200 bucks in cable gear. Very, very rigid. Look to the camp chair in front to the right for scale.

How much power do you think we'll need? I mean I'm sure I can come up with a small generator, but if you want me to bring that 40k watt turbo desiel sitting out back... just kidding. With power we are going to have to have a bunch of gasoline too. Hmm...stuart wrote:O.K. many responses

Regyna, bring the wine... heck being where you are at you can only come up with a case or two? I guess it is kind of late. If it were only a couple of months ago we could have raided some of those vineyards, eh? =)
