from the east to the west

Hello burners !

I'm a DIY enthusiast guy in his 20s, I like to build bikes, sculptures, skate spots and shit... ; but what I like most is building weird film cameras from scratch.

This summer/fall I'll go on a road trip from Hollywood Florida to Hollywood California, to meet a lot of DIY/folk/junk/roadside artists all along the way, and to do a photo/video report about their work/life, using only homemade equipment built from junk i will find along my way (yes i really think(hope^^) that i can build a working movie camera with trash 8) ! )

Starting in July and ending in October, I think I'll visit Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona & California.
My route isn't really decided inside those states though…. EXCEPT for a little town in northern Nevada named Black Rock City where something tells me I’ll find quite what I’m looking for!

I don’t think I will bother you burners with fucking cameras everytime though… But I have an art project in mind that could be kinda cool I think : To build on location and giveaway little junk pinhole cameras that can record a whole week of exposure, so you wouldn’t see faces of people, but just their art, the evolution of the temporary city, and so on…

Here’s an example i shot : 6months exposure where you can see a building that wasn’t done at the beginning, but was finished at the end : the sun pathes are going through...

I also put 3 cameras on 3 moving cranes on the construction site :

Could be cool to put these on a mutant vehicule for example…

Well, this is what i’d like to propose !

On a side note : if you know some cool stuff i should not miss during my diy artist road trip, or even better, if you’re an artist and want to meet, hit me up !

Cheers :coffee:

Steven.

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Welcome.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

You might check Roadside America, Center For Land Use Interpretation and Atlas Obscura websites. There are also Faceboo groups specializing in abandoned places, and likely ones for roadside oddities. Arcosanti, and The Chinati in Marfa might be photogenic stops. You might want to decide how to keep cool and protect all your film. There is ice for sale at the event. Oh yeah, welcome, and you will meet many artists there.

There's a ghost town website, too. I think it's organized by state. I just search on "Bodie" and go from there.
