Per the radio shack double-male connection wire- if they have a long enough one fairly cheap, then that's the way to go, just make sure it's stereo.
If they want more for it than it would cost to assemble one yourself using two male-end connectors (also available at radio shack), then you can just make one long enough to reach your stereo. It's really easy. 50 feet of speaker wire can be gotten at the 99 cent store if you're really on a budget.
The Ipod w/fm transmitter is a good idea, that would also let you transmit to a friend's stereo which is really cool (though pricey) but for the car stereo, depending on your budget and technical ability, Best Buy right now has one, an Aiwa I think, that plays mp3s, comes with a remote, and has a front auxiliary input jack that you can plug anything that has a headphone jack into and play through your car stereo. Again, you'll need a double male end connector to plug into the walkman or whatever, and the front aux input of the Aiwa car stereo.
And it's only $150 or so.
I was using an FM transmitter until I got this one, and it's just way easier and quicker to just plug the thing in and start it playing. Has better sound quality too.
And if you go that way, don't buy an FM Transmitter from best buy or whatever, better ones for cheaper can be found on the net.
Be the dime you seek.
