I'm just being crabby.

Post by actiongrl » Sat Sep 13, 2003 3:06 pm

>So how come it's not comical to so many of your loyal members? Imagine you're hosting a party of old friends and new neighbors at your new house. If the old friends leave after three minutes that's a clue that something is making them uncomfortable.

Right, but if my old friends start saying I invited the neighbors just to drive away my old friends, I'd take exception....as though squeezing out loyal members of the community would be a purposeful act. I have been on the ePlaya since the first redesign (2000?) and am a pretty avid poster. I don't like how I can't get this one to remember which posts I have read, and I have a lot of the same gripes as other users right now. I do like other things about this one, though. I could never get some key features of the previous one to work.

Smilies are fine with me unless abused or animated.

Sorry...I just get my nose tweaked by the us vs. them thing sometimes. I really want to be doing things well and right, and I sometimes feel we are broadly misunderstood and take it too personally. Blah, blah, blah.

at this point in time & prior to this post, by using the "profile" button under each of the preceding 20 posters' names' it has been determined that said 20 posters have an amassed total of 24.69% of total eplaya posts

on this thread, each poster (20) has an average of 1.23% of the total playa
posts. low actual % was at .16%, high was at 3.9% out of the 20. an actual complilation of .83%, 1.21, .73, .16, .94, .54, 2.0, 3.16, .91, .58, .41, .54, .39, 2.12, 2.02, 1.0, 1.78, 3.9, 1.26, & .21 was used for a sum of 24.69% of total eplaya posts for the aforementioned grouping of 20.

there are 1732 registered eplaya users at this point in time.

tart and scathing and also humane
A fine goal. Yet a fair number of the bliss-hippier types who wander through find anything tart/scathing to be insufferably inhumane. (And they're usually quite willing to get plenty t/s themselves in response, which has always seemed a bit curious to me.) An additional number are happy enough to read the t/s posts about someone else but get all nasally dislocated when it's pointed at or anywhere near them. Some of us like the taste of tart. Some just tend to be more scathing than others--that's how they are--and if you look past the tone without letting it fuck yer day, it often turns out that they have something useful or interesting to say mixed in with the grumpy stuff.

If you can find a set of rules that will satisfy all of those groups, Girlie (& others), well good on ya. The ones posted initially seem designed to bleach out the color from the language here, lest someone might become alarmed by it. For my part, I'll continue to relish and celebrate the color.

The remembering last posts is a time-conected feature, this e-playa (the software) asumes that after x time spet you have gone through all the posts, there should be a timeout somwhere in the code that can be set to 0 so that time has no connection to weather you read to post or not.
Shit, where was i for the last week... ehm...

I'm a newcomer

who only used the old eplaya for a few days before the change-over to this one.

In just that short time, and now trying to use this forum, I'm no big fan.

The old eplaya was more intuitive and all the bells and whistles on this jalopy don't mean squat iffen it won't even go the speed limit. Sometimes I feel like getting out to push.

However I am not complaining one bit. The good folks who put this together and maintain it are doing me a favor. It's a gift. I accept.

Thank you.

Peace!

I agree it's a gift. But I'd like to improve it, especially the layout graphics.

So I'm a little blunt...

Post by aforceforgood » Wed Sep 17, 2003 11:00 pm

People will always be offended by those who disagree with them, no matter how sweet the words their ideas are couched in. I like the fact that I get to talk to people here that are really intelligent or at least have wildly different points of view than I do, and I'm willing to take their comments straight up like a shot of whiskey if need be rather than like some foofy mixed drink with loads of sugar and an umbrella that's good only for poking eyes out.

I myself was accused of being too aggro in my posts, then too pompous and condescending when I tried to soften them and give the person I was responding to credit for their kind and gentle (though I felt they were misguided) views. fuggit. There's always gonna be someone that doesn't like what you said or the way you said it. The question is, is there any wisdom or humor worth reading in what they said?

BTW, apparently there are skins for this fuggly place- now if I could only figure out how to install one I'd be set. Anyone have any clues as to where a FAQ on that would be?

>where a FAQ

you can pick a board style in your profile. there is supposed to be documentation for rolling your own (which would have to be installed by the admins) at the phpbb site, but last time i checked it was all empty pages.

i just tried changing it, and it doesn't seem to have worked, though...

If everyone would just drink a little warm milk before they go online, I think we'd all impressed with the results.

is it surprising that (like nearly any social phenomenon) posting follows power laws here on the eplaya.

Tx for the stats, nips. Just to show it pays to be nice:

In light of Recent DPW Events, I'd say it costs too damned much not to be nice.

A decent writer's humor (or mere irony) should be obvious to a reader with even a room temperature IQ. Emoticons are tools for lazy and inept typists unwilling to work toward creating lucid written expression.
I have hated emoticons since the first time I saw them; loved seeing this statement. If you cannot write well enough that your meaning comes thru, don't fill the screen w/garbage.

ok, this has thusfar been a thread in the old eplaya style - contentious, witty, creative, defensive, offensive, and compulsive/excessive - or almost anyway.

"just stopped in to see what condition my conditiion..." and found the crew not so live and not so well.
of course, that's just my opinion...
...maybe.
