Build An Air Cannon for Cheap

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Fri Jun 10, 2005 6:52 am

I know, just what you need, another project to build before Burning Man. This one is coming together pretty quickly here my garage. Dig it at http://www.mutantvehicle.com/Apokizooka.htm and post your thoughts here.

Maybe we'll bump into each other on the playa and start a battle for "air superiority".

Another brilliant, yet diabolical innovation. My hat is off to you. Will you also be exhibiting the "1000 pound wench" mentioned on your site?

Winch not wench.

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Fri Jun 10, 2005 8:42 am

Yes indeedy, my shiny mechanical friend. For now, you can play the mini-movie of the winching (not wenching, per Killbuck) test on the website or click here:
http://www.mutantvehicle.com/images/Apo ... 20Test.MPG

Since you and I are of the same mind on so many things, I'd love to have a conversation with you sometime before the event. Please PM me your phone number and times PST that would be good for you.

Cheers, metal ears!

How diabolical! We had one last year, but unfortunately Mother Nature conspired against us in actually deploying it on the Playa. May your fortune be better.

You may consider filling it w/ smoke from a smoke generator first, we could get visible smoke rings this way. Also, there are UV reactive smoke fluids, and with a UV spotlight, the rings glow at night as they roll by...

Hmmmm this is strangely like the Pantzooka of Pantzooka Patrol fame. Have you spoken to them about this flagrant breach of limelight theft? What can you launch from this here contraption you made. Please see Gothalot at the Black Rock Beacon. Could be a story for us in this.

Yes, the Pantzooka! Is that for people that sport the Donald Duck look with a shirt and no pants? I remember reading about that and thinking it was brilliant.

Actually we spit a little closer to whoever holds the patent on the Airzooka. If you're just shooting air you never run out of ammo. I'm off to Mr. Fixit's house tomorrow to see how we can mount it on the tricycle. Wish me luck!

Pantzooka on Patrol

Post by Gothalot » Wed Jun 15, 2005 6:38 am

Well, Id love to discuss some sort of photo op / story with you. Perhapse a duel between your org and Pantzooka Patrol. You could say I know the group intimately and I over heard in a seedy bar last night they want to launch pants at you for laughs.

LOL, Goth. If we can get the thing to lock and load fast enough, we could play volleyball with the pants and they would never hit the ground. "Keep away from the naked boy... ha ha!"

Pantzooka Patrol wasn't to worried about the naked guy as long as he wasnt sporting the Donald Duck look. Vollyball it is! If we can find a court Pantzooka Patrol will easily take on a game with your lot pants or pantsless! We wear kilts anyway. Mwhahahahah.

Far out, man. My friends and I were talking about building one of these (winch-powered, mounted to our structure.)

Nice to know it's been done, so I don't have to do it. Although it would be rad to have the power to randomly nuke somebody, or their tent, from a block or three away. Un/fortuantely, I'm not that good of an asshole.

Thanks, Zaphod. Great minds burn alike.

Hey, Jafe. Tell us more about the uv reactive silly sauce for putting in a smoke machine. That and a black light would make this a night terror on wheels!

Special shout-out to Mr. Fixit and Kernul Killbuck, my collaborative partners on bike rig and the lethal look, respectively.

Was it you that told me there is a chemical additive for smoke machines for UV? We could have black lights mounted and send out huge purple smoke rings!

I think it was Dragonfly Jafe that suggested the UV rings-juice...I'll have a couple of specially-hacked UV solar lights (thanks, Sparky!!) and would investigate more UV toys for such a noble purpose as this.

How heavy is the cannon, and how much room does it need to operate?

Do you mean there are UV lights that charge up in the day like a solar malibu landscaping light? That's perfect! Is there such a thing as black light LED's?

Actually, they ARE Malibu lights....They were "upgraded" by my friend and Hushville neighbor Sparks, who gave them to me last year. They're nothing to see in daylight, but in the absense of other light are fairly effective. not sure where Sparky got the diodes, but they're available online and at some autoparts places....

Egad! Checked for battery operated fog machines and the only thing I can find are the albeit cool ass theatrical models for over $1000. Since playa dust till be everywhere, especially close to the ground, I may experiment with water mist although it is often too heavy to travel with the air ring as it passes through the atmosphere. You know those little ponds you see in gift shops with the ozone generatory thingy in them?

I did some reading only to learn that UV LED's are on the longer band of the light spectrum and don't work so well with lots of standard flourescent paints, etc. Wouldn't it be cool if somebody researched playa dust itself to find out what specific color wavelengths reacted to it best?

Upon a suggestion here on E-playa last year, I used a 1 million candle power police spotlight covered with a "congo blue" color theatrical gel. Dimmed the hell out of the light and the effect was marginal. You just can't beat a real flourescent black light for the effect, and you can find 12 volt models pretty cheap that are made for automobile bling. "Cold Cathode" tubes may be another option. I've used these: http://www.elwirecheap.com/noname.html in different colors for under lighting. Fragile glass, though.
