Burning Man Vs. ?

Post by Chai Guy » Thu Sep 29, 2005 11:24 am

I've decided that each week I'll conduct a "tale of the tape" and put Burning Man up to another event for a comparison study. This week it's Burning Man Vs. Disney Land. feel free to comment, or add your own comparisons.

If I do a comparison of Larry Harvey and Hitler, do standard usenet rules apply, or are we allowed to continue arguing?

I think that since you asked first, we will forgo the usual usenet protocol in this case.

Disneyland is MUCH, MUUUUCH cooler because the bathrooms are cleaner, you can get your name stitched on a hat, and if you sneak around back and look carefully you can sometimes almost see Snow White's ankles when she's changing clothes in the dressing room.

...at this point I should probably note that I haven't been there since I was 11. Everything I learned about perving out on cartoon characters in aprons, I learned from Disney.

-c
(One of our campers did a few tours as a musician for Disney's cruise lines. Says it's a BLAST going into the crew lounge off-shift and seeing the single Snow Whites, Dwarves, Goofies and other characters drunk off their asses and calculating who they're gonna hook up with that night. I hear Cindarella gets around. Oh, and Minnie and Mickey actually got some too...)

I believe there has been more than 1 death at BM. Seems to me there was one in 1995 or 1996? when a dumbass on a motorcycle ran into a tent and killed someone, and then again 2 years ago with the art car incidient.

Apparently the tent guy is still alive and attending the event in a wheelchair, but I do remember the press accounting him dead. In 03 there was a plane crash that resulted in two or three deaths--although in the hospital in Reno, and a highway death on the road home. (Although I can see illiminating that as it would be really hard to figure out that stat for dismalland.) And there was at least one death this year. Although he was apparently declared dead in Gerlach. I've long had a private quarrell with the llc for saying that "no one's died on playa during the event" (this was before the 2002 event) as it seemed really hair-splitting. I'm just wondering what crteria Chai uses.

A little. A fellow from Reno got into a domestic dispute and got wacked with a frying pan by his wife. Later he died of a heart attack. He apparently had quite advanced heart disease.

Here are some links and information to the fatalities that have been associated with the Burning Man:
1996
Wired magazine labels Burning Man "the new American holiday," drawing a record 8,000 people. Rave camps appear with all-night thumping techno. Burning Man suffers its first fatality when a motorcyclist collides with a truck. Money management problems send Burning Man into debt.
*note that Burning Man did not consider this a fatality "at the event' because it occured outside the gate

Chai Guy, how about BM vs Vegas

Vegas[Bugsy] started on Lake Michigan,,,moved to the desert

Vegas is all about lights

Vegas has art instalations

Vegas is radical inclusion; if you brought money,,,you're included

radical self-reliance,,,,bring lotsa money

Vegas has moop--littered with bus. cards from call girls

How about it Chai? fill in the blanks.

"ZaphodBurner"

So how about:

Larry Harvey vs. Walt Disney

Walt's been toast for years[or a popsicle] He's getting kinda boring. How about
Larry Harvey vs. Hugh heffner
" vs. Hunter S. Thompson
" vs. Uday Hussein
" vs. Tommy Smothers
Can't forget Douglas Adams
I better stop if I hope to preserve any shred of credibility.

Chai, how long do you spend to prepare a good interesting post?
I need 2 hrs for a good one. I worked an hour on one this morn ,,,,and then my modem got pissed at my wood stove and zapped the draft.

The good ones usually just flow and I don't spend any time with them at all. The Burning Man Vs. Disneyland I had mostly in my head, but I spent about an hour researching some stuff. The next one took a lot longer, and required more reading, but I think it's pretty good too.

Burn the Mouse

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Sun Oct 02, 2005 5:59 pm

Sidebar: I'm taking the family to Disneyland next month. Previously, I've had a hard time giving myself over to the event because the attitude of the people there was so awful. This time, I'm really going to try to give myself over to the event Burning Man style. You know, actually try to believe in "magic" and fully interact.

Any other thoughts on taking the burn to Mickey withouth letting the commercialism or materialism turn you off?
