Welcome all new folks!! You'll find that 99.8% of the people on eplaya are very very accepting... just speak your mind and be real. Don't be afraid to be different! We like that kind of Montley krewe around here (I love Mardi Gras Spellings!!) Use this site to make awesome playa buddies and comrads, and some use this site for post burn decompression depression. Studies have shown that its similar to post-pardum depression, or post traumatic stress disorder. and ADHD. I've never even been, and I'm experiencing what the Docs call "pre-Burn Delirium and elation." Its trippy, you should try it.

I'm assumeing that there are .2% of eplaya folks that are not accepting. I've yet to find these people, but there are almost always bad apples in every bunch, call me cynical. Whether they are "nuts" or not remains to be seen. And also, This is assuming that you are not included in the .2%. Which I'm 100% sure you are not. Now we must find out who the .2% is and give them mandatory forced hugs on the playa.

You're absolutely right. I know far beyond a shadow of a doubt that if that money is in my bank account, rather than Uncle Sam's, I will go through it faster than shit through a goose. One of the myriad joys of a bipolar spectrum disorder; hell, I've been known to spend MORE money when I'm in trouble because I figure I might as well enjoy the ride if my finances and I are going to hell. (And yet, I handle the money in the family because Mr.Koosh is even worse at it, scary as that is to imagine.)

How in the heck is it my fault that the gov't takes a bunch of money form my paycheck? It's not like I just write them a check for fun and get it back later. . .I can't really say "No, you can't take money out of my paycheck, government".

Maybe I'm missing something, but there is really no need to be snippy and rude.

You can claim more dependents than you have and they take very little out, usually less than you owe.

I was only snippy as a service to the Eplaya as someone needed to fill the .2% void stated by the OP. I'm just trying to help - man.

If you receive a large refund every year and your financial conditions don't change then you are having too much withheld from your paycheck. As stated, adjust your W-4.

If you file your taxes properly the IRS can never come back and "get you" later. It doesn't work that way. Generally, you must withhold as much as you owe or an equal amount that you owed in the prior year. The amount is calculated and owed per quarter. (the simple explanation.) If you file a Schedule C or make lots of money the rules are slightly differnent but for most W-2 filers that is how it works.

The "coming back and getting you" was in reference to claiming more dependents than you actually have. A co-worker, who decided that income taxes were/are illeagle (sp?) for a great many years claimed the maximum number of dependents in order to not pay taxes. Last I knew of him, the IRS was getting ready to sue him. (I have no idea what the outcome of that was. I didn't really have much to do with him, since he was on third shift and I was on second.)

Dunno about at the real low income levels-- as a single person I always got back a few hundred dollars, then again I no longer recall how much was Fed and how much was State. I do recall the largest chunk was generally state, thanks to the Homestead Tax Credits Wisconsin has.

Actually, when you are single, really poor with little in the way of resources, taxes become pretty simple. I'm none too certain that adjusting your W4 will make much difference.

So, how would a single person, earning, for example, $6.55 an hour, living in Fitchburg, Wisconsin optimize her W-4?

Not only does the gov take taxes off the money you make but inorder to spend that money you have to pay more tax.

When it comes time to file, claim the appropriate number of dependents, just not at your job when they withhold money. That way you are paying the correct amount, but the withholdings are smaller than their estimated amount. Claiming more dependents when you file is tax fraud and it's likely they'll still owe you money if you claimed them on your withholdings too.

Taxes are way simple for me. Last year it was just a matter of adding up my paystubs and entering them in. A few other options (business expenditures? school? etc) but nothing that made me go "crap I don't even know what that means". And I definitely fall into the single, really poor category. Then again I'm a dependant, but that really needs to change fast or someone's gonna die. Anyway....

Brother - the whole adjust your meds thing is older and more boring than your dirty panties. Think outside the box once in a while. It won't hurt. It might even be insightful.

This will be my first year too. I'm finding myself constantly thinking about it, tossing ideas back and forth on how the hell I'm going to build a little shelter for myself, what art projects I can do- what masks I'm wearing, hats, costumes...

Not to mention the lists of shit I've got to somehow buy and stockpile for this summer.

It sounds like a whole lot of work, but it sounds like a motha fuckin' good time. I'm going alone- so I'm hoping it turns out well.

Burning Man is coming at a good time for me. I'm turning 21 in September- and watching the man burn will be sort of a rite of passage. Sadly, I don't turn 21 until 20 days after the man burns. What am I to do?

I'm really excited about the spiritual elements to the festival- so many traces of paganism. But I'm also very excited about the party aspect- drinks and drugs with new friends.

It's gonna be wonderful.

Party aspect? Quickest way to annoy folks, mentioning the perceived party aspect. First, none of us will serve you adult beverages while you're underage. Sorry, your good time does not overrule my responsibility not to get busted.

Drugs with new friends? Foolish, the undercovers out there are good, I hear. I wouldn't know, we party sans chemicals.

Don't worry, you'll have a blast, but be aware that "party aspect" you are envisioning may not materialize. Many good threads on that on eplaya, look some of them up so you'll have a more informed view.
