Well, lets all hope we don't go backwards on this issue.

"States have taken sweeping action in recent years to roll back "get-tough" approaches on drug policy, turning toward prevention, treatment and other alternatives to fight addiction, a new report from an advocacy group found. "

Maybe it's cheaper...

I'd love to see California (or any other state) announce that the budget crisis forces us to, effective immediately, halt the persecution of peaceful, harmless pot smokers and spend the savings on education and other public necessities.

Check out this song' s lyrics. If you can find it on Morpheus or whatever, it's worth downloading, too.

Oregon stopped prosecuting a whole bunch of misdemeanor crimes
earlier this year.

"In March, all appellate, tax and circuit courts plan to scale back to four
days a week. There's not enough money to pay for public defenders, so
the plan calls for at least a temporary halt in prosecuting misdemeanor
crimes such as shoplifting, burglaries and drug possessions. "

Let's bring cost/benefit analyses back to government.

I want my 87 billion dollars worth of national security and I want it now!

Financial problems also are helping to drive the changes in many places, as deficit-ridden states seek to cut costs.
Well, that lesson didn't take a long time to sink in or anything. State representatives are curious fauna indeed!
