Thanks for your insight on this.MikeVDS wrote:I think her point is that the target audience might ask that very question. Being that you didn't get that, I have to wonder, what is the purpose of your sign?
The assumption that I didn't realize I had was that I was thinking that people would be standing in line at the porta-potties rather than isolated, and that the signs would be put outside (although inside would just delay the discussion), so when someone asks, "what are the 10 Principles?", or "who is Larry Harvey?" then there is someone to answer their question. Another assumption was that people have plenty of time to read, and I assumed that the audience I was dealing with was smart enough to make conscious decisions -- whereas imperatives ("don't put anything but ...") give orders without reason, I was simply stating consequences of actions that I believe are entirely true.
The point is to target people who try to do good things but when they see a privy full of cups, they just figure it's okay to add theirs. Maybe they figure it's just like a flush-toilet and you can put anything in there that they can at home. By suggesting they -- we -- will be forever known for ruining the day of some guy working for Johnny on the Spot who's going to be shoulder-deep in a shit-pipe trying to fish out a chicken drumstick may make someone understand better. For instance, if they thought the potties were dumped somehow through a large aperture, then it really wouldn't matter what you put in there.
Hmm ... that said, maybe that's the biggest issue: that people don't understand the process. If you think the bottom of the pottie gets disconnected and dumped, then it's like a trashcan. If you think there's a large hole (i.e. 12-inches) that's opened, then pretty much anything smaller than that is fine. If you realize they walk in the front door with a vacuum hose and suck out the waste through the toilet opening, then you (I believe -- even I don't remember for sure) probably have it right, and with that in mind, you'll probably make good decisions.
If someone can explain why my analysis is incorrect (other than "people are too stupid" which I simply don't believe) then please do so.
I had further assumed that the author of a sign would be responsible for getting it printed -- that maybe someone would post suggestions about their own experience using various techniques, materials, and vendors. I had no idea it was a centralized effort -- I just figure if I think "it should be done", that it's my responsibility to do it.robbidobbs wrote:As a reminder to all, unless you are creating the signs yourself, and puting them up yourself as your art, the verbage must be able to fit on an 8.5" x 5.5" sheet at 36 point type. This limits the number of words.
