First Camp Is An Eye Sore
the place is a mess.. what do you call it when you ask other to do and you don t?? the last two years it has looked a lot like a hobe camp.. it s an eye sore to the center camp approch... the hat can t get off his ass and get into the spirit of thing.. or is the first camp parking lot suppose to be an art display?
I can't comment on first camp having successfully avoided it all these years. But I hear you about Larry. He's nearly impossible to rap with, seems to have no creative juice. It's almost like he's coasting on his history and doesn't want to mess it up by saying anything new.
Oh well. He's a great speechwriter.
We're all doing what we can. Maybe you can raid the place with a big feather duster. Might be fun.

The First Camp eyesore is so easy to fix, especially with two weeks left to go! Just send out a quick JRS to the community and ask for a cool $40K to spruce things up. Come on, decoration for First Camp is art and you don't want to be accused of not supporting the arts! Besides with the prominent location of First Camp, Burners(TM) could see just what their hard earned donations paid for. Come on AG, just whip out another JRS and watch the coinz start rolling in!

should the camp have to deal with placement?? and agree to clean as they go.. or just let the mess grow as the week progresses.. they could also park the cars in back and pretend to obay the non driving rule.. instead of the in your face they project now..
not asking for a white picket fence.. if you live that way at home it may be hard to change.. please ask earth guards for some advice.. a mess is not into the festive mode..

Archantael, you're a piece of work.
So, I live in First Camp, so I'll answer for myself: I spend a month working up there to make the entire city buzz, so no indeed I guess I haven't done much to decorate my trailer I will be sleeping in when my work day is through (I'll be 7 months pregnant, don't ya know). I guess I thought I might be contributing in other ways.
Sorry.
I can say I definitely do NOT leave a mess and I help to try to make my camp welcoming to the many folks that come visit us this year (ever wondered what First Camp was for? It is many things: a staff office, a landing place for visiting politicians and other cooperators in Burning Man, a place to hold the daily senior staff meetings.... here's more info in the '05 afterburn report: http://afterburn.burningman.com/05/admin/firstcamp.html) And the front of our camp actually does have some nice interactive stuff - right there in our front yard is the Regional Info Center, the BRAF "Scrap Eden", and a fire barrel where you will sometimes find me when I'm not working.
PS Thanks to the thousands of JRS readers who have contributed to the amazing projects that Archantael so snidely refers to that have really nothing to do with the First Camp topic of this thread, btw.

AG, an expectant mother to be would always be an exception to most rules, expectations, etc. The thread is about first camp and not you specifically.
But if First Camp is a place that hosts VIP's...one might think it could be a little more spiffy than what it's been the past couple of years. Having it look like the leftovers of the Rainbow Gathering parking area does not make for the best impression.

well, i'll tell ya: the map of our camp has been redone this year and i think it's an imrpovement... and scrap eden is going to be amazing thanks to BRAF and a whole slew of awesome folks helping out - wait until you see it. But yes, indeed, even when i wasn't pregnant i lived in a trusty dusty trailer out there for the month i am on the desert. a few of us do.
we all do put our efforts in at first camp in various ways -- it's where we live on the playa, after all. i also build (yes, physical labor is involved) media mecca most years, although this year i'll not be doing so, of course. so i spend a good chunk of time in the sun slinging dusty stuff around to make our camp in any given year, and feel like between mecca and first camp i put in a good amount of sweat.
last year I put my "we" power into sorting and banding wood for 3 days for the bwb wood collection effort along with 8-10 other BWB volunteers. I love banding wood, as it turns out. It's really fun.
I will pass on the thoughts about the firewood and parking at our casita, though. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey. I've seen first camp. It's not as bad as some. Not to raise stink, but shill fuck out. For all the shit that goes on there (It's not just a place to live) its fine.
Plus - it's their camp. I keep my camp my way, they keep theirs their way. Fuck... Chill out. Quit being so snarky. If ya don't like the org or the event or the people who throw the thing, fucking don't go. Jeezusfuckingkeerist. all of this "The top of the org sucks, and I'm gonna be contra to them no matter what they do" is fucking Bullshit.
Damnit. I don't wanna side with anyone, but after you hear this "how fucking evil the org and the people putting it on" bullshit over and over and over and over and over it gets fucking OLD!!!!!!!
GET THE FUCK OVER IT. If ya don't like the event, fucking don't go. If you don't like the people putting it on fucking don't go. If you think some doing some part are criminal or stupid or are out to fucking harm you (jeezus!) then DON'T FUCKING GO!!!
QUit slamming everyone on the muthafucking board because they're on the muthafucking board. (Sorry, slipping into Oaklandese there). I'm fucking TIRED of it, I would think that most people are fucking TIRED of it, and it's so passe it's fucking STUPID.
And there. I said it. I'm not on the board. I don't like some of the primadonna attitudes that happen there, some who work there think their shit don't stink because they run a rinkydink part of a relatively small event. But FUCK, Give it a motherfucking BREAK.
Shit.

my fun is from the dark side.. one of the funniest at burning man was: i came upon this camp that had trash from thee tents to the street.. the camper were all laying around tossing crap down as they went.. it s very hard for me to get off my moop mobile after sitting long.. and I fall over sometimes without my cane.. besides i m kind of a bent/spent old man
so i crawl off my trike, get my cane, grab the grabers, get a "big" bag out and go to work cleaning up there mess.. one of them said some thing and they all jumped up and cleaned up.. i think i pick up maybe two items of moop.. then they apologize for te mess..

Mike, this isn't just any camp but a camp located on the Esplanade at the entrance to the keyhole. It's arguably one of the most visible pieces of real estate on the entire playa during the event. And if I remember the requirements for getting your theme camp on the playa correctly, there are certain slightly higher standards that come with being placed on the Esplanade to begin with.MikeVDS wrote:Why do you care what anyones camp looks like? So IMHO the crux of this complaint is people wanted First Camp to live up to the same guidelines they ask of others, and AG's post seems to indicate that what's being asked for is not that unreasonable. It's not like this camp is at 9:30 and Landfill....
For what it's worth, I'm not promising there won't be a woodpile right where it was. Just said I'd pass it along. You do have to put it somewhere, and the flame that burns in the Keyhole fire cauldron, I believe, is fed by that there woodpile...so wouldn't' that make it Y'ALL's pile of wood, not just ours?

I think most of the requirement is offering something useful to the event and having a "need" for being placed there. I've seen some really ugly camps up front. And if I remember the requirements for getting your theme camp on the playa correctly, there are certain slightly higher standards that come with being placed on the Esplanade to begin with.
Is it just a mess or are they leaving moop that could blow away around that the rest of us have to pick up? "Ugly" and "useful" is subjective but if they are mooping then maybe they do need a visit from the moopmobile.

I thought it was another DPW site
If you're high up enough in the org you really can't miss it.

Ahem... I built them about a hundred feet of picket fence out of barn wood one year when they needed skirting around the RVs to block the wind. Don't knock it.unjonharley wrote:not asking for a white picket fence..

I think you meant that actiongrl is the garden spot of Center Camp.
In any case, don't blame Andy, he just builds it, he doesn't decorate it.
