Recently, I heard about a device that is going to be placed
in cell phones and other devices that can track a vehicle or person that can be monitored by an individual's computor.
I would be nice to incapacitate it with out distroying it with the use of a magnetic eraser so I could find out who it belongs to later since it will have a code it such as a telephone number.

No not a the playa please!
Some of you, including you Bob, know a little about me so I won't go into details.
Its not illegal to place a tracking device on a vehicle in the state of Montana. All i want it to jam a CDMA/ GPS device within a 15' to 20' foot radius that's all. I don't want to destroy because it may be evidence or point me to an assailant!

For phones there's this: http://www.globalgadgetuk.com/Personal.htm
and this (supposedly the best):
http://www.netline.co.il/LP.htm
and this (would look good strapped to the Man if cell phone coverage were ever made available on the playa):
http://www.netline.co.il/VHP.htm
Afghani President Pervez Musharraf's recent escape from a remote controlled bomb supposedly due to a jamming device installed in his armored Mercedes. No indication of who makes the device and he's currently not returning my calls.

You can always try one of these: http://www.primeportal.net/laws_rocket.htm
Not to be confused with Newton's Laws of Motion and rockets BTW.

I suppose if you tried to employ such a device for a legitimate purpose, you'd want to ensure other devices on your wrist, in your pocket, under the hood or dash of your own car, in the chest cavities of any passersby, etc. were immune to the effects of said device.

Perhaps A II Z, and a few other of us, who may rent RVs know that 1)they forbid their being brought to BRC and 2) have monitors on them for, if not that very purpose, ones just as Orwellian. Now candidly, I wouldn't want some stoned-out burner renting my RV and bringing it out to the desert only to have it get trashed (and yes, the omnipresence of playa dust does qualify as trashing a vehicle, unfortunately) and I must admit I am guilty as charged. So the question is, how can we keep the RV rental companies from tracking us to this otherwise forbidden destination?

For starters, consider renting from a RV company that doesn't care where you take the vehicle. El Monte RV rentals seems to be the most burner friendly in NorCal.So the question is, how can we keep the RV rental companies from tracking us to this otherwise forbidden destination?

It's beyond the capabilities of many but you could always spoof the signals for GPS, and the portable cellular jammer that Badger linked to does work if you can get your hands on it. Good luck on buying it; getting Absinthe past customs is easier.
And anyone setting off an EMP on the playa would likely take out 75% of the vehicles on the playa due to fried e-proms, etc. Jamming cell signals is one thing but if you have to resort to stupid tricks like generating EMP's please stay home. The event doesn't need the Federal scrutiny an EMP would bring.

Unless there is something specifically in the contract about tampering with said device (visibly at least), what can you do if their equipment fails/blows a fuse? As long as you bring it back to them on-time they really can't do anything about it now can they?abeerinthemorning wrote:Uh, don't you think that having the blip disappear from their supposed radar would make them more concerned about your use of their equipment, not less?
What you need to be careful of are those silly contracts that say something to the point of 'If you take this vehicle offroad the contract is null/void.' If you have problems and have to have it towed off the playa, or the Contessa rams it, then you're hozed insurance-wise.
A lot of rental car companies have offroad clauses (see non-paved road in most cases)...

Not illegal!
Badger, I've check out those sites and they only list the UK as place were they are prohibited.
If they turn out to be prohibited in the states, I'll have to a more drastic approach. That's too bad because I know it will be encoded with a cell phone number I could have used to trace someone.

Tossing a grenade into a basket for the kittens to play with
You're overlooking the obvious, and more low-tech (at least at first glance) solutions-
a) removing it and putting it on grandma's car. That way, it looks like you're driving it around in the area you're supposed to be in, and really really slowly, to boot.
And unless grandma's a long-haul trucker, you'll save on mileage costs. Though having the odometer and the gps unit's mileage not match could cause a bit of a problem... the fact that it might transmit engine information might cause a bit of a problem too...
or
b) Or you could just pull the power cord... anyone know how long the battery backup might last?
or
c) smash it with a rock.

Jamming GPS
Okay, I used to work with GPS units during my academic years, and although it never occurred to me to try and find a way to jam the signal...
I believe that the correct frequencies to jam are 1575.42 MHz for military and 1227.6 MHZ for civilian.

http://www.aero.org/news/current/gpsSignal.html
http://www.findarticles.com/cf_dls/m0UB ... icle.jhtmlIntentional interference
Intentional interference is another matter. The GPS satellite is at a medium orbit of 11,000 miles and transmits with a power of just one watt. The received power on the ground is 1 x 10-16 watt - one ten quadrillionth of a watt. A simple 5 watt noise jammer on the GPS frequency can kill the GPS signal to a range of 200 kilometers (120 miles). A jammer borne by a small weather balloon can kill GPS in an area 800 miles wide.

He, He, He, He, He!
Those mind control beenies could become helpful during the intense Presidental Election Campaigns. I hear both parties will be hiring Mind control specialists to follow the Campaign trail and brain wash people in audience.
I hear they work quite will at BM meetings dimishing Larry's power!
I found a device attached to my vehicle a two years ago. I was connected to the rear lights or possibly the tank fuel pump (could have been a shut off device to disable the pump).
I left it on so I might meet whomever placed there. Had some very interesting encounters. Oil men it was (it was during bushes election campaign and I was writtings letters about Bushe's incompetance as a governor) They didn't like that. But up here the extractive industry are really dogs in wolf clothing.
Thnks for the advice everyone and keep them coming!
