I really do wish I could recall the conservative pundit who I got the idea from. The idea is the same as Malcolm X expressed when he said blacks should refer to each other as nigger (and apparently as doomed to failure), or when Americans in the Colonies started referring to themselves as "Yankees" (and, apparently, we have regressed beyond that). To separate it from the impact. The symbol is not the reality. The act is just burning a piece of fabric-- it, ultimately, does nothing beyond that. People need to be reminded of the difference between a symbol and a reality.

Ultimately, I agree with you. It's not radically different than watching Ozzy Osbourne bust up a cross in 1982. Tomorrow, nobody will give a damn.

I remember my grandfather telling me about the first time he saw an American flag at Camp Lucky Strike after being liberated. More significant to him was seeing the Statue of Liberty when the ship filled with former POWs arrived in New York. Maybe we had to be there, but, it sure mattered to him.

He wouldn't have tried to stop anybody from burning a flag, though. He'd have simply turned around and walked away. Whatever message the other had attempted to convey, though, would have been lost because the person burning the flag, in nearly 100% likelihood, never suffered a fraction of what he did or even dreamed of seeing what he witnessed at KZ Mauthausen.

I guess it's really a matter of how effectively you want to make your point. If somebody just wants to piss off the right wing, I guess that'll do it, but the more it's done the less anybody will care. Then what?

Flag burning is, and actually always has been (in the US, at any rate) more of a non-issue which has been used as a distraction for the press and the public. The number of US citizens burning flags has always been very small. The threat of people burning flags, however, can be used to get a reaction from a disproportionately large segment of the population, and that reaction is then used to control them. Therefore, if no one cares about flag burning, one less "button" is available to be pushed. (Gay marriage is another non-issue-- after all the number of gays is something like 10 percent or less of society, and the number who want to get married is even less than that? And, ultimately, isn't their getting married between them and whatever supposedly all powerful being controls the universe? I really don't feel qualified to do a camp on that topic, though-- or at least much less qualified. It would take someone who is gay and/or licensed to perform marriages.)

I don't know if I am smart and/or clever enough to actually pull it off, but I hope to be able to pull it around to the topic of using non-issues to control the public.

Hmm. Provocative but interesting. I hope that if you decide to do it you're able to do so effectively because there's potentially a lot of fruit on that tree. Best of luck!

Get a large drop clothe and some paintball guns, then shot the image of the flag onto the canvas.

Then burn it.

Call the piece "It's my right."

If the base of man is gonna have all of the flags of the world on it, then then Ol' Glory has to be above all of them. That's just the rules folks.
http://www.usa-flag-site.org/etiquette-display.shtml

Maybe collecting a pile of old flags, or making a bunch of flags unusable would somehow be more acceptable. After all, burning it in a dignified manner leaves the technique open for interpretation, but that is what you are supposed to do with it anyhow. Burn it !!!

This is a better idea.

If I had far far to much money I'd bring over a chip van. It would drive around gifting out fish and chips. The End
