Yup, i know the difference. We actually were really lucky and got a homebrewing setup from a guy who had been doing it 15+ years so we have almost every piece of equipment needed to brew almost all styles...including a giant chest freezer that we can control the temp on.Token wrote:SS, you know Pilsners and Lagers need refrigeration to brew properly, use a different yeast than ales and take much longer to brew. I would suggest a California Common beer (Example: Anchor Steam from San Francisco). It ferments in the high 50s, low 60s but retains the crispness of the lagers, pilsners and marzens.
I think i will try doing a California Common at some point. I tried Anchor Steam when i was in SF over christmas and it was quite tasty. (hard to find Anchor Steam out here in GA).

Malt Liquor is a type of beer, specifically it is a type of Lager beer (i.e. bottom fermenting at cold temperature yeast). The distinction is that it has high alcohol content which is not fermented from the malt alone but has been artificially increased by use of corn sugars or similar.Box Burner wrote:So what is the difference between beer and malt liquor?

I'll be a virgin in '10 and am brand-new to eplaya.
I do, though, know how message boards work. I had beer/homebrew questions. Search function, and taha....thread resurrected.
I'm also new to homebrewing this year, and definitely want to bring some to the playa. The 5 gallon pin kegs sound like just the ticket, and are cheaply available. I'm a bit concerned about keeping them cold. Ice costs could climb to a pretty big number. I won't have power at my camp I don't believe, so I'm in a bit of a pickle. Maybe I'll bring a few 5 gallon kegs and trade cooling for consumption.

zachass; You might want to hook up with some of the homebrewers who are still at the event. There's one that I know of, for sure, from personal experience and that's the Home Brew for Home Brew camp. Goathead who posts here often is in that camp. They bring many kegs and have the refrigeration thing worked out.
Goathead has been offline for a couple days for a work trip but he usually posts here almost daily. He'll be the person to chat with about refrigeration for home brew.

I bet you could keep your beer well in the shade, and just run it through a "Jockey Box."
A jockey box, is a box with coils in it, through which the beer flows. The box is filled with ice, and the beer is cooled, as it is dispensed.
This way there is no need to keep the entire stock of kegs cold.
The link is just an example of what is available.
You could make your own if you have the parts.

I've never even heard of one of these before. That is a marvel of modern science right there. I've found my solution! Thanks for the info! Once I confirm that my beer tastes like beer instead of, well, NOT beer....I'll invite folks over for a cold one.

If I can't afford to get a full Co2 setup by the time the burn happens for corny kegs, can I assume you'd hook them up if I gifted them so other brewers could try?
I still have a LOT to learn about brewing and doing anything but put it in bottles.

You should try bottling at least once, if nothing else just as a learning experience.
One friend of mine bottles in the plastic liter or 2 liter soda bottles, they work great on the playa, good for hiking around with.
Watch ebay for a used cold plate, once you have that just a regular cooler, a tap, small CO2 bottle, some tubing and a few small hose clamps and your set.
and the cory keg of course.

I actually have 48 Grolcsh-style bottles I found cheap a month ago. Those are going to be my starter storage. I'm bringing the 4 tap kegorater out! 30 gallons of beer (cucumber pilsner w/ hint of black pepper, mango spiced wheat, and probably my baltic double chocolate mocha porter for the mornings...then 15 gallons of 9 month mead...5 gallons cider lagered...5gallons home distilled absinthe, my 3 gallons of orange sunshine (orange flavored moonshine)...for cups I am taking a can opener to used cans...clean...sanitize...then glue fur...hole punch...then add mardi gras beads...that way people can save it for later...kinda stoked to have the mini bar and kegorater out there...how many people should I expect being a virgin camp???...anyone want to bullshit and do some tasting??? anyone from the reno area?? advice??
