Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday dear Charlie, Happy Birthday to me. Today I'm 57, only 5 more years until Social Security. When I went to visit my mom, she gave me a cheak for 57 dollars. Dear sweet ol' thing, she's 75 and still treats me like a kid. There's an old saying that, " there is only one perfect child and every mother has it.". There is also a bittersweet aspect to this time of year because my father died 22 years ago today. Yes, on my birthday. '86 was a bad year for my family. Three uncles and my father died within 3 months of each other. All of cancer. I am one year older now than my dad was when he died. This past year I had an irrational fear that I would also die when I got to be 56, the same age as my dad. But hey, I made it. Happy Birthday to me.

Be like the Mormons this year and store a years worth of non-perisable food. Current temp here is 108.1, high was 109.9. Third day of 100+ temps. Late freeze here killed the fruid yeilds, high heat killing the nut harvest here. In Iowa, corn planting delayed due to saturated soil. Only 50% of seeds down so far. Expect food shortages, higher costs. I'm stocking up on cases of chili beans and fritos (my favorite snacks). Local stores here are limiting rice bag purchases. Asian restaurants are hurting and changing menus. I also recommend that everyone raise a victory garden like during WWII and the Depression. Fuel cost here is $4.85 for a gallon of diesal, gas is $3.85 a gallon. Late planting varieties of crops should do OK but timing is everything this year. Get it in the ground...
