I've thinking about using some steel posts to put a barrier/shade with a tarp or two. Steel posts as in fence posts fyi.
I was wondering if those are ok for the playa since pulling them out would/could leave a nice little hole if removed improperly.
Should have posted on this sooner, but I get lazy.
See ya there!!
Steel posts?

I use t-stake fenceposts for windbreak fences around my camp. No problem.

I prefer "smooth" rebar over the "ribbed" rebar.
Smooth is easier to get out of the playa- the ribbed rebar can really grab hold.
I typically never have to pound further then 8 inches into the playa.
Smooth also leaves less of a disfugred surface- easier to repair when breaking camp.
Tennis balls or milk jugs to mark the poles so they be avoided by pedestrian traffic.

They work great. I prefer them over rebar. have used them for several years now.
Get or make the 2" pipe hammer (it's a pipe with little side handles and an end cap) for driving them. much easier than a sledge hammer.
They remove fine, don't leave any worse of a hole than rebar does.

I grew up up on a farm and have used post drivers like those for years. So I'm covered there, it was just the environmental aspect I was concerned about.
Thanks :)

DPW puts in a few thousand t-stakes every year, so don't worry about it.
