age question
age question
Some friends and I (5-6 total) are planning on attending Burning Man for our first time, next year.
We will all be 18-19 years of age eccept one. She will be 17.
Will this be an issue?
If so, what can we do to have her attend with us?

Re: age question
If she's under 18, she has to be with an adult/guardian. Maybe they won't check, maybe they will. You'll be rolling the dice.nispe wrote:Some friends and I (5-6 total) are planning on attending Burning Man for our first time, next year.

Irony. You're soaking in it.
And the guardian needs to be over 21, so none of you will qualify.
yeah thats our problem. i mean shes an important part of our "social group" if you will, and it would be a shame for us to drive for 2 days and have issues at the entrance. =(
also another question i have is how does one gain entry. is it like border patrol type security? or do you just drive up and park or what?
tl:dr how does the greeting process work?

There is one road in, the rest of the area is fenced and yes, they watch for people driving across to avoid the Gate. Yes, they have night vision goggles. At the gate they take your tickets, check ID if you all look underage, and search the vehicle for contraband like guns and unregistered mutant vehicles and stowaways. Then you proceed through the greeters station and forward to find a camping spot.

Tell her to wear a fake mustache. That'll make her look older.
Or, hook up with some pervert Burner who will sneak her in as his daughter or smuggle her through in his kick drum...
.... ....OMFG It's Chris Hansen! PRANK CALL! PRANK CALL!!! I THOUGHT SHE WAS 21......
(jesus. was that over the line? )

good question
Most likely, she won't get in. If all ya'll are around 18, you'll all get carded. If she can't prove that she's 18, she won't be allowed in, and neither will your vehicle. You can't just dump her at the gate, as you seem to know.
You'd need a letter, probably notarized, attesting to the fact that her parent has given guardianship to someone else in the group, someone over 21.
I don't think it'll work unless you have a cool aunt or older sibling who will take on all of that legal responsibility.

Re: good question
I know nothing about any of these per se, but that doesn't usually stop folks from talking....
Really, how hard is it going to be to find a vehicle of respectable-looking (is there such a thing in a burner?)-clear-of-age friendly burners in the queue-up at gate (I've an impression there is a big queue?) and get them to let her ride in with them? Seems likely she'd make it through that way.
Or, find some other burners local to you (I presume there is some sorta local community wherever you are at? Sorta late to be getting started, but...) to caravan down with and look responsible for a teenager.
I am hoping you really are all close-knit group of "good kids" who will be looking out for each other, are responsible, and aren't gonna let bad things happen to yourselves or each-other. There are good reasons for the age restrictions. Current science has pretty good evidence that full maturity of decision-making, etc., doesn't occur until into the 20s. But I do think teenagers can be self-reliant, just think it takes more conscious efforts on their parts.

Re: good question
Doh, missed that you said "next year", by which you mean 2009. Should totally be enough time to befriend some local burners, convince them you are responsible (if you are) and get them to "smuggle" her in for ya. (Might be best if someone actually *did* sign temporary/limited guardianship over to one of them formally...and you then camped with them, just to make it all on the up-and-up.)

I bought my ticket on my own before my eighteenth birthday, and got into BRC just fine. I look about 16, but nobody questioned my age. She should be fine, as long as you all play it cool. But to be safe, have a 21-or-older guardian with you.
Sidenote: The playa is a very harsh environment, and while I understand where the people who advise minors not to go at all are coming from... I think it is a load of bullshit. Regardless of the attendees age, the important factor is whether or not they, personally, have the maturity to take care of themselves-- Whether they are fourteen, or thirty-five.
