2012: The Last Burn

Fertility 2.0 - Black Rock City is a kind of Petri dish. Theme camps cling in fertile clusters to its latticework of streets, artworks tumble out of it, like pollen on the air. These nodes of interaction mutate, grow and reproduce their kind. Burning Man communities have now escaped this capsule world: our culture in a Petri dish has effloresced - it spreads across five continents. This year's art theme contemplates the tendency of any being or living system to create abundant life.

2012: The Last Burn

Postby jackmack » Thu Sep 18, 2008 10:13 am

I heard a very serious rumor this year that 2012 will be the last burn.

Reasons: Too big, & it's deteriorating into something not what the founders wanted.

Sadly given the way it's going....I hope it comes to an end. It's becoming a big "scene" rather than sincere. 2012 would be a poetic way to quit the burn while it's ahead. Burning Man has done what it can... time for something new... completely unrelated.

Anyone else heard this rumor, can dispel this myth?

well....
the I Ching (sp?), Mayan (or Aztec) calendar, and, Hopi indian legend, all call for the world to end in 2012, I think others but can't remember.
so, if true, the rumor would make sense......

It's not so much going to end, just change entirely....

December 12th or 21st 2012 is the end of the world.....not physically but that's when the reptilians are going to come out and begin eating everyone. So although there will be a BM in 2012, it is technically when the reptillian take over begins. And there will be more in the future...it'll just be more of a feast for them then a naked art fest...fucking Nibiru

god damnit!

hence... the whole "end of the world" prophecy is really the end of burning man... the beginning of a new age of human consciousness...

I think this is why they chose 2012 as the last burn. I mean 2010 wouldn't be so "amazing". Fuck I hope it ends in 2012.

I haven't heard such rumors, but I am far from an insider. However, your reasons for it ending don't make much sense to my way of thinking.

First, the size of the event can easily be controlled by the number of tickets they decided to sell.

Second, I am guessing that the event does make enough money to provide a decent living for the organizers; otherwise they wouldn't have begun selling tickets to begin with, nor would they allow the number of tickets sold to increase.

Once the event became "private" with "paid admission" it left the realm of some spontaneous 'gathering' and moved into the realm of the 'business' of creating a spontaneous gathering 'experience'; which I think they manage to do extremely well, and there is nothing wrong with that in the least.

But that is just my opinion, which is subject to change and often does.

...tickets are a understood necessity to cover "costs" with the event be it salary or land fees.... who cares I'm not a communist.

the point is... .the more people who show up... the less "intimate" it is. people are more afraid and less interested in connecting with one another.

people are more standoffish.... care more about dancing & art than personal growth and connecting with other people. the bigger it becomes the more "shit" comes too...the worse it gets... .i dont' think it's getting better even though I wish it would....

I get to live in the fire most of the time, lucky me...

Postby honeyfire » Thu Sep 18, 2008 11:24 am

Nah, 2012 will the Rapture, when all the tightass "Because MY deity doesn't like it, that's why!" types will be sucked up into the sky to a fabulous eternity with their Main Man (and more enjoyment to 'em, i say!), leaving the earth to those of us who actually like to have a good time and then we'll be able to live in the fire every day, thus obviating the need to go out past Gerlach to get all wacky and pyrotechnical...

Not that i've run all this through the Mayan Precession Matrix or anything.
It's just a guess.

All true. It's just reeeeeeally tough to work out a way to keep it down to people who actually belong. Not the least difficulty being what constitutes "belong" and who gets to decide...

jackmack wrote:care more about dancing & art than personal growth.

You say that like it's bad thing.
Is personal growth more the point of the Burn than art?
Maybe for some people, yet not for others.
I was always under the impression that art was the center of it all, the grain around which the pearl was formed.
But it may not seem that way/work that way for everyone, and i have no problem with that.

And just by the way, connecting with other people is an inherent part of art.
No connection, no art (though possibly some superb craft).

ah ha!... NO...

ART is the bullshit excuse we all use to get together. it's the music in the jukebox & the neon signs on the wall... or the pool tables & park benches...

burning man is MUCH more than the aesthetics on the "surface".... of course it's an "ART" community. but everything we do is ART.... including the way we express our selves and be ourselves... and we can't be ourselves if we're not committed to self discovery...

burning man is not a big rave or art show... it's not a zoo. the art gallery down my street is ALL about art. burning man is about so much more...

...i state that as fact & opinion. and we need more people to recognize it as so! we need to cultivate a culture of inner growth and connectiveness. this is why as i understand it burning man is coming to an end....

i digress.

if the mayan prophesies and edgar cayce and Jimbo, the homeless Guy are correct, there wont be a NEED for burning man after 2012 as the default world and the burning Man Reality INTERMINGLE and have babies.

so there you have it.....dont be afraid, surf that wave, but dont fuck up the playa.

Since the OP's sources are so reliable, there's no need to mention them. Simple. Run rings around you logically.

You have to go to the right butcher. Back alley in San Francisco. $17 a pound, but oh so worth it.
