Report warns of rise of right-wing extremists

In a report made public today, the Department of Homeland Security warns that the recession and the election of President Obama are "fueling resurgence" of right-wing extremist groups that are seeking new recruits, especially returning veterans.

The intelligence assessment suggests that veterans make attractive recruits because of "combat skills and experience" that could boost the "violent capabilities" of radical right groups. Further, it says that any possible new restrictions on gun ownership, combined with vets' trouble reintegrating into their communities during a bad economy, "could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks."

"The high volume of purchases and stockpiling of weapons and ammunition by right-wing extremists in anticipation of restrictions and bans in some parts of the country continue to be a primary concern to law enforcement," the report states.

But DHS "has no specific information that domestic right-wing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence," spokeswoman Sara Kuban told Fox News. The assessment was issued last week to law enforcement. A similar assessment on left-wing groups was issued earlier in the year.

How does DHS define "right-wing extremism'? It writes that it "can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."

The report has lit up the blogosphere.

One prominent right-wing blogger calls the report a "hit job on conservatives." Others denounce it as "execrable" and "a blatant propaganda effort designed to characterize conservatives as racist, anti-American, dangerous extremists".

Read on for the key findings of the report:

â€¢ Threats from white supremacist and violent antigovernment groups during 2009 have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts. Nevertheless, the consequences of a prolonged economic downturnâ€”including real estate foreclosures, unemployment, and an inability to obtain creditâ€”could create a fertile recruiting environment for right-wing extremists and even result in confrontations between such groups and government authorities similar to those in the past.

â€¢ Right-wing extremists have capitalized on the election of the first African American president, and are focusing their efforts to recruit new members, mobilize existing supporters, and broaden their scope and appeal through propaganda, but they have not yet turned to attack planning.

â€¢ The current economic and political climate has some similarities to the 1990s when right-wing extremism experienced a resurgence fueled largely by an economic recession, criticism about the outsourcing of jobs, and the perceived threat to U.S. power and sovereignty by other foreign powers.

â€¢ During the 1990s, these issues contributed to the growth in the number of domestic right-wing terrorist and extremist groups and an increase in violent acts targeting government facilities, law enforcement officers, banks, and infrastructure sectors.

â€¢ Growth of these groups subsided in reaction to increased government scrutiny as a result of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and disrupted plots, improvements in as the preeminent world power.

â€¢ The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.

â€¢ Proposed imposition of firearms restrictions and weapons bans likely would attract new members into the ranks of right-wing extremist groups, as well as potentially spur some of them to begin planning and training for violence against the government. The high volume of purchases and stockpiling of weapons and ammunition by right-wing extremists in anticipation of restrictions and bans in some parts of the country continue to be a primary concern to law enforcement.

â€¢ Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to right-wing extremists. DHS/I&A is concerned that right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities.

I checked out La Raza and it doesn't say anything about discriminating against other only about discrimination towards them. National Of Islam has come out against Judaism but as a response of discrimination against other muslim especially the mid-east conflict. Their recent tone as been of reconciliation- correct me if i'm wrong. Hey, I don't like the big three religions, and I don't support their rights to practice freely as long as they discriminate against others- especially gays and those of other religions!

Sometime in the future, our nation will have to look more closely at what is really preached and the content in their books. If they don't rewrite them to be inclusionary, Then I'm all for banishing them!

ok, thanks, I was just wondering about your stance.......some folks will argue only "right wing, white" groups should be banned......
I'm for it, across the board, if they are "for" or "against" any specific group.......
otherwise, if you can't/ won't ban all of the "special" groups, how can any be banned?
then, of course, there's that pesky "freedom of association" thing.........

I'm sure any of the more radical groups, have committed mayhem towards others.......in the name of their particular groups beliefs, values, etc.

Of course "La Raza" et al, wouldn't post anything on a website regarding same, if they're smart, and, I think they are.
I'd submit, though, that most of them are racist against whites, and, probably other groups, as well........

I struggle with the idea of "inclusionary" being a mandate for a group.
I appreciate being able to choose who I hang out with.

Yes, this report, which was started in the Bush White House only states what has been known about the recruitment tactics of the Extreme Hate Terrorist Gangs. Their members are encouraged to join the Armed Forces and infiltrate higher positions. From there they are asked to join special forces, including other departments such as the Police, state police FBI, CIA and So on.

The new labeling of these Groups to Gangs and to domestic terrorists are just realizations that these goups are violent and have targeted Americans for too long. They have no loyalty to our Constitution and Bill of Rights or the core values of democracy. They only see these institutions as an impediment to their goals of an exclusionary nation.

If the Taliban which didn't kill thousands of people in 9/11, are considered an banned terrorist group so why isn't the Nazis which has killed 100's of 1,000's of Americans NOT? They are even considered illegal in their own country of origin. Or the KKK, which has heen a domestic terrorist group and claimed to be so by since their origin not be designated as such a threat to the American Way of Life!

There is a difference between Freedom of Speech and inciteful inflammatory proclamations is that one can leads to freedom for all and the other to retract those freedoms from citizens based on exclusion to freedoms.

This is not about fanciful out-of-touch talk show hosts like Rush, but real terrorists.

And the playa should be considered sacred to mock all groups equally without persecution.

I just had a lot of hate to spew, negative influences i suppose... my earlier post has been eating me all day... I remember a large art car passing, and a guy with a megaphone yelled "radical inclusivity should have ended with you!" I looked up, and some hippys were like "what?!"and a guy sitting in a geodesic dome at the corner with a megaphone yelling at people. I've just been... negative lately. Least its all out of my system, I personally would not want to bring this shit out to the playa (my hate is never funny) :(

Hate can be taken as a fascinating artistic concept. It displays the human desire to reduce the world in a good vs. evil scenario. Racism, sexism, homophobia and the like are profoundly annoying and far too powerful features of our world.
By attempting to make it "hate free" officially--through bureaucracy we may limit the freedom of individual expression.

See, I'm not sure that it's a "desire." I think it's a survival trait past its usefulness. I think if we want to effectively fight it, properly identifying it is an important first step.

No one is preventing or limiting the paradoxical expression of art for it is an essential part of life.

I do think you may want to re-express your feelings.

Fuck Gays Camp or Jewish Princess Blow Job Camp can have many meanings different then its supposed literal expression.

Mein Camp has always been a spoof as well as the Barbie Death Camp.

By all means, those are the expressions we feed on!

We or I don't want to see people coming to BM and beat up on the diversity we have at BM. Most likely, the guy you think is gay is really straight- the second most heard line is, "Hey, I'm really not gay! my girlfiend suggested this costumn."
