Planning on 2009 Burn

Post by Generic Anonymity » Thu Aug 21, 2008 12:14 pm

Hey burners
There's absolutely no way I could make it this year, but I am starting to plan for the next. On one hand, it may be a year to wait, but on the other, I get all that time to prepare!

Here's to burning man, this one and the future fests! Image

I'm guessing Aug 30 to Sep 5 next year??

Will see ya in 09', maybe even as a registered Theme Camp. Not to sound to pessimistic, but 08' is going to be better than 09' :( (But then again, 09' will probably be better than 10' I suppose...

Well, the event isn't over until the 6th or 7th, but you have the essentials right.

I'm really excited - got my tix, got my ride, and soon I'll have my bike.

I'm also trying to think up a way to make a boa without feathers.
I've seen some knitted ones, but I can't knit. I can, however, macrame.
There's got to be something I can do with that...

I've seen boas made from tulle, also from fabric squares or circles.

Welcome Home.

I guess I see what might cause people to say this sort of thing, but I am seeing it almost everywhere on the forum.
What gives?
Wouldn't it be better to think of bm in the realm of the present and not consider it in comparison to anything, particularly previous years?
It's a city - they change, and the people in them change. Dynamics make things interesting; if it were exactly the same every year, it would lose that.

I think I found someone who gets it -

You need to come to this event with no preconceived notion of what burningman is...kinda like a newborn coming into the world...no one preps that baby for what its about to experience...therefore the child is more likely to roll with the punches...
and if your lookinmg at it that way, why most adults cant deal with advercity...because they have a preconcieved notion of what the WORLD is suppose to do/be/say...
how many people get frustrated with the world failing THEM?

Its not the world...its the person.

It's part of our method of dealing with "bitter ex-burners" those old-timers who have outgrown the event and won't shut up how bitterly they hate Larry, or whatever the target of the moment is, for changing the event that they loved. These old timers do get tiresome, for the dreariness of their chatter, as well as for the pure annoyance factor of having to hear over and over again that we missed the golden age and are the very symbols of how far the event has fallen.

Oh well, I guess the best thing we can do is to have fun despite them.

As to the beer(s), bx1, I might find that location, but how will I recognize you? You could say something like, "I'll be in a bowler derby." But there's no guarantee that 20 other people won't be wearing bowler derbies. In fact... I now feel the need to find a bowler derby. That'd be great.

It's never worked before because I've always found a way to foil the plans by getting there first! And my oh my, those playa beers were tastey! ;)

In terms of raw facts, this year seems like it will be more conducive to enjoyment than last year. Heavy rains will have the playa surface hard as a rock, the Evolution theme should bring some REALLY cool artwork, and the recession should result in less tourists than usual. But seriously...better Burn, worse Burn, who's keeping track?

I'm just glad you're coming to THIS Burn! Look forward to seeing you out there!

Four and a half months and counting!

Sweet - I'm really hoping it'll be less dusty. I saw the podcast last year... solid white. I honestly thought the image was out until I saw the shadows of people and vehicles.

My current concern is my new bike.
Image

I just got it yesterday. It's a beach cruiser hybrid with only one gear and pedal-based brakes.
I've heard people say not to bring anything you'd be concerned about losing.
I'm also getting a lock, though, and my friends who went last year didn't lose their bikes.

I'm considering making a post in Q&A to see if I need different tires.

if you ride naked, the "cheese" that develops on the seat over the course of a week will deter any would-be thieves.

except for a small contingent of japanese businessmen located at 5:30 and D or so, near the porta potties. They actually collect and revere used bicycle seats.

stay far away from them.

I think the tires are perfectly fine. One gear should be OK, though its nice if you can downshift. Last year it was exceptionally soft ground, hopefully that will be better this year.

The 'don't bring anything you'd mind losing' comment has two reasons. In the case of bikes, theft is one concern. Bringing a lock is a good idea. But the other concern is the wear and tear from the playa dust. The dust is very fine, like flour, and its corrosive.

If you clean the bike well after you come back it should be fine, but personally, I wouldn't take a good bike. Others do, though.

It goes for other things you take as well. The dust affects things. Some will never be the same again.

I would say that NOTHING you expose to the playa environment will be the same again. My tent, my sleeping bag, my ThermaRest, my backpack...all of them have had a grimy coat of white since I first took them out there, no matter how much I scrub and wash. It's not bad, but it's something to take note of so that you aren't pissed off upon returning home and finding that your playa souvenirs won't go away.

I haven't made up my mind quite yet about the nakedness - I sunburn easily. What I'll probably do is wonder around nude for a bit, and then go back to costumes or whatever. It certainly would save room in the packing process, though.

And as to the concept of nothing exposed to the playa being the same... isn't that part of the point?

Your bike is a beauty. I have a beach cruiser as well and it was a bit hard riding last year because of the conditions. I hope that this year the playa packs down more but it is what it will be. I see a propane bottle in the pict. Are you adding some flame effects? :D

Thanks - I'm a big fan of it, too. No, I'm probably not doing flame effects. That's for my family's grill. :)
I did attach a monkeylectric light set to the front wheel, though. It should look pretty cool while I'm riding. (If you get one, use the code BIKECULT for a 25% discount.)

I do think I'll bring my bike out. My bf went last year and he tells me that he only rode his during the day so that it wouldn't get accidentally borrowed at night.
