I think West Virginia alone used to have somewhere around 150,000 jobs from coal. That's when it was primarily deep mined.Mountaintop mines in the states where the practice is most used - West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee - produce approximately 130 million tons of coal each year and employ about 14,000 people.
A return to deep mining seems a good idea to me, but it costs more and means less profits for the higher ups in the companies.
