I agree, it is dismissive and lazy. I'd like to point out that various denialists also characterize their opponents using this term.

I think it's a pretty darn accurate term, for, general society.......
how folks just go along......as long as they have cable tv, fast food, and hot water in the shower, nothing else matters........

For me,It has nothing to do with intellect, or, underestimating "opponents"......it has to do with being herded and just placidly following.........I rarely underestimate people, and, as with you doc, I feel there are many points we can and do agree on........I see few opponents, mostly, just people that have some differing views......

I'm sure others use it in many ways. I'd also submit, people use many terms with multiple meanings.....

I'd like to see an example of Fishy's "self congratulating" sense.....I'm not sure what is meant by that.

I'll tell you what I hate. Go into a room full of people. Watch all of their interaction. Then turn on a TV. They're all mesmerized. It drags their attention away from everything. Pretty sad.

I was following 2 guys on motorcycles who were going WAY too fast. The lead bike went into a death wobble and tossed Bill down the pavement. When I got to the scene, the other guy Shaun was really shaken up. He said that Bill had flown just like a rag doll. Then he told me that "it was just like on TV"
His reference point for describing reality was television. BTW, he was from Berzerkely. He told everyone on the motorcycle tour to carry rocks in their pockets so that they could break the windshield of anyone who tailgated. He said that all his friends in the bay area carried steel ball bearings to do the job.
I'm not sure if he's still among the living.

Chinese Coincidence?

I'm not really concerned about swine flu. Here's my concern. 3 years ago, Chinese calendar, year of the cow..... Mad Cow disease. 2 years ago, Chinese calendar, year of the bird..... Avian flu. This year, Chinese calendar, year of the pig.... Swine flu. Next year is the year of the cock...... Anybody else worried?

It's crying time and it's going to get worse.
"With the economy faltering, the number of youngsters living in homes without enough food soared in 2008 from 13 million to nearly 17 million, the Agriculture Department reported last month. "
"The president's aides are focusing on a congressional debate, deferred from this year to next, on how to renew the nation's main child nutrition law. "
OK, so the kids have to wait til next year to eat.

Everything that the corporatocracy has done is punitive to families.
What happens when GOV gets tired of extending unemployment? There is NO driver for a return of jobs.
GOV has time to debate health$$$$$$$$$$$$$ WAR$$$$$$$$$$$$ banks$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ CO2$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
But kids,,,, can't find the time. I guess that the kids and our future just aren't as important as locking up tons of money.
The crying is going to get a lot worse in the future. Breaks my heart.

I heard about them but prefer to keep my donations local. This year the entire donation budget went to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Who knows, maybe someday I may have to use them depending what the government does with Medicare and Social Security.

I read far and wide. I'm a lot more worried about food availability than I am price.
Here's some info i collected for a post somewhere else;

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2009/ ... d-shortage

How many economics departments in academia said anything about an imminent housing bubble? If the economists didn't see any sign of something that was painfully obvious to Schiff, Jantzen, et al,,,, how can academia be so certain of something that is as tenuous as global warming.

I'll buy "climate change",,, sure. NASA and other researchers have all linked it to solar activity. There is a lot of research to show climate change. I was told by one of the foremost researchers that the weather would get very violent after 2010. The trend is colder, not warmer.

It was reported a while ago about 80 million acres of farmland being plowed under in Australia so that trees could be planted,,, to absorb CO2.
Strange,,, I would have thought that fast growing crops would absorb even more CO2.
"109 million Ha (19% of Australia's farm land) of farm land locked up to meet its UNFCCC Kyoto Protocol commitments"

http://www.sosnews.org/
That's 269 million acres. The increasingly violent weather is ruining crops and destroying farmland daily. OZ is in a drought that is supposed to appear once in a thousand years. Now, they have to lock up farmland???
OK, so we produce bio-fuel that locks up farmland. We lock up farmland to store CO2. We pave over 1 million acres a year for urbanization.
One could almost deduce that global warming was being used as an excuse to shut down a lot of agriculture.

As the weather worsens, China will be especially hard hit. They have a long history of weather damage;
http://factsanddetails.com/china.php?it ... ubcatid=65
What happens if we go to all this trouble to mitigate global warming and,,, global cooling is what develops?
There would be a lot of acreage that would be too cold for leaf crops. They would be limited to grass crops.. This happened to Iceland after the 16th century.
I don't trust anyone who screams SO loudly that man is causing the earth to heat up.
For many decades, the world had 110 days of food in reserve.
It's now down to about 27 days. The US has almost nothing in reserve. Call me paranoid
:(

"Jim Randas, former U.S. Intelligence officer, appeared on ABC telling Americans to start stockpiling food."

"The 2010 Food Crisis is different. It is THE CRISIS. The one that makes all doomsday scenarios come true. The government bailouts and central bank interventions, which have held the financial world together during the last two years, will be powerless to prevent the 2010 Food Crisis from bringing the global financial system to its knees."

http://www.marketskeptics.com/2009/12/2 ... mmies.html
"United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), instead of adjusting production estimates down to reflect decreased production, adjusted estimates upwards to match increasing demand from china. In this way, the USDA has brought supply and demand back into balance (on paper) and temporarily delayed a rise in food prices by ensuring a catastrophe in 2010."

The problems can't be that bad. They didn't mention a shortage of bacon.

If everyone went out there and bought a year's worth of food - from US sources - then our economy would take off like a bat out of hell.

Nope, inflation is only predicted to increase 1.5% over next 10 years.

Please check return interest rates on savings, on CD's, and on longterm loans. People have stopped using creditcards as much, due to usury inspired foreign owned banks. Overcharges on overdrafts on debit cards will soon inhibit their use. Right now creditcard companies are locking in their rates, before next years' restrictions start.

I predict that in 2011 will be a revival of cash economy, and decline of open credit raiding of America. 1 of 5 men in my area are unemployed, the "Great Recession" will be with us for at least a decade, maybe two. We've got a six month Spring military offensive coming up in Afganistan. Pullout in July from Iraq, unless they (the Iraqis) invade Iran over the landgrab. Things should really start to pop in late March and the opening of the high passes in Pakistan/ Afgani border areas...

Reducing stockpiles of food staples will encourage planting in the spring, and will in fact lower consumer prices come the harvest. We are still capable of producing ourselves out of this mess. It's what Americans do. We can support the harvests in the Southern Hemisphere buy stocking up now too.

Then we can get on with the next cycle of elections in 2012. Obama's men should restart re-regulation of financial/ business/ political/ industrial complexi.

Regulation of banking and investment is still completely unsatisfactory.

I predicted economic failure as soon as reagan started talking de-regulation.
But only a moron wouldn't have expected these results.

I know many people that were predicting the real estate collapse and so on, right on schedule, and warned many people.
So some people are right on top of these things.

It could apply several ways to this.

I don't know if that's possible, but it was clearly possible to read through the disinformation about the economy and stay on top of that.
I didn't pay much attention because I wasn't playing in that area, but I wish I had.
It has affected me directly and indirectly and many people I know and in my family.

I have always kept a nicely stocked pantry but in light of recent events I feel the need to ramp it up some. I was recently turned onto water bath canning, and as soon as I can will buy a pressure canner as well. I plan to support my local farm markets as well as grow what I can to can and dehydrate. Something else I plan on getting into is long term storage using 5g buckets, gamma lids and O2 absorbers. This technique can be applied to food storage and non-food items as well.

Working every payday to whittle down the list of preps.

sailman, the big bakeries buy frozen whole eggs in 5-gal food-grade buckets. Then, they throw them away. I got a couple hundred of them and used dry-ice to store wheat. 4 ounces of dry ice is what is supposed to be correct. After it turns to vapor, I sealed the lid and taped it.

Add a dessicant packet if you can. Dry ice has some water moisture in it.

I assume the dry ice is for displacement of O2, correct?

Can you just use a CO2 bottle to fill the container or is there some magic with the dry ice?

Thread drift:

What is the "calk" used to store water 2000 years ago??

the water was collected from the roof and stored in clay jars, calk was added.
