well, in truth, I am just the resident video geek. Scott is our guy in charge of all things audio but is not an eplayan. so I am acting as liason. The camp vibe is ultra friendly (it is camp hi! afterall) so we try to avoid anything getting too dark and heavy. Funk is key. But in truth Scott spins a pretty eclectic set and certainly ventures into what some might call progressive house/trance. Anyway, if you are interested, PM me.

i'm a house dj and so is my roommate. we can both submit a link to a mixed if you'd like. last year we brought our own decks out, but we would like to spin "out" away from our camp this year as well.

the crates will be packed full of tracks that are both funky and booty-shakin', guaranteed.

PM me for more details if you want to know more about the style, past residencies, etc.

Much applause for ya'll, cause that set up looks kick ass. I would be interested in doing some shadow dancing if you end up with that. I like Goa/Psy, but house is cool. Surely you should have no shortage of DJs. Great job, looking forward to seeing it on the playa...

thanks for the props y'all. Thanks to the DJs who have replied (great set chai). It has been a lot of work (still making content) and cash but a true labor of love.

verbana, shadow dancing is a must! At Xara Dulzura we had 5 folks (1 behind each screen) at one time. Lotsafunforeveryone. Video from our trial run at XD will be up on our site soon.

sweet, looks beautiful cool

Post by dmcycloid » Sun Jul 18, 2004 11:26 pm

I could definitely do a sweet set of my own prog house/some trance sets. Also wondering what your VJ set up in like. I have a few weird ideas for integrating music/vid and could probably(*probably*) try to get some moontribe dj's that are going to be up there for you as well.

How many nights are you going to run the setup? Do you have sound equipment yet?

btw, know anyone else with video setups anywhere near as nice as this?

peace,
keith

hi! again,

the set up has nothing to offer VJs as there is no realtime component. The rig is driven by 3 synced DVD players. You would have to BYOTCVJR (bring your own three channel VJ rig).

no need to worry about it all coming together, it already has. It has been event tested.

the set up will run every night of the event. We are planning on having two 'go till sunrise' parties but will have music and visuals every night. We can't get too loud as we are not in LSSA land. We will be bringing up a pair of Mackie 450s and decks.

Bringing REASON to the Man

Post by Dardanian » Tue Jul 20, 2004 6:53 am

If it is still an option I would really like to spin a bit. I'll be bringing my own computer to plug in-- not much of a hardware guy myself.

I spin trance and happy hardcore. Is that all right? Also, I am developing a marathon set with visuals for next year and would really enjoy getting a chance to play bits of it that are coming together. It is meant to be a 12 hourish retelling of the Iphigenia at Aulis/Illiad/Trojan Women/Odyssey/Aenead cycle to run dusk 'till dawn.. but I only have about 68 minutes done at this point so its just disconnected deep trance.

Let me know! Also, does anyone have ideas for keeping the alkali dust from getting into the vents of a computer on the Playa? I'd like to avoid frying my poor computer if possible.

Awesome camp idea, by the way!

i'll never understand why dj's do this.

the original post specifically says "we want funky, booty shakin house."

how exactly does happy hardcore fit into this request?

:?:

i'm not trying to be argumentative, it's just one of those things i see occasionally in the dance music community that doesn't make sense.

I spin it all from doors to freaky chakra to orange kush. I like to call it funky clash breaks lol. All that being said I am bad at keeping times but good at remembering days lol. Anyways spinning or just having a good time Looks like fun weres the camp going to be at?

Your best Gumby impression

Post by Dardanian » Tue Jul 20, 2004 12:11 pm

Let me clarify, Mo:

They asked for "funky, bootyshaking house."

I answered that I spin happy hardcore and trance.

If someone asked me "We are going to the mountains to ski. Do you ski?", I might reply "Well, I do snowboard." The skills are similar but not identical, but both can take place on the same mountain with minimal disruption. Alternately it may imply that I have an interest in snow sports and would be willing to change my routine if needed to be with the group.

Admittedly, happy hardcore seldom mixes well with house-- but trance does. I'm more than willing to change my set to fit the crowd, and I imagine the camp organizers will allow some genre leeway.

Good advice for BM in general: Summon the spirit of Gumby. Be flexable.
(The other two bits of good Gumby advice: "Don't fall off tables or you will turn into a puddle", and "You will live an exciting life if you have at least one friend named "Pokey", are less topical but also good sage wisdom.)

--Christopher of Aeneadae

PS. The reason I am not simply moving on to another camp without comment is the extraordinary setup they have with the screens, and the fact that they were actively recruiting. Its worth comprimising genre to get to first-screen my video clips.

a few points...

hi! is not a theater. That is, the vid rig is not intended to screen outside content (there may be one or two exceptions. It is the playa afterall). I am the video nazi. I spend about 6 months developing content that is specifically designed to be played on those screens. My 3D content is rendered with a virtual 3 camera rig that replicates the position and angle of the screen set up at burning man. The 2D compositing and motion graphics are designed to use the pallette that all 3 screens, in sync, provide. The content on the outer 2 is also deisgned with the intent that there be people dancing behind the screens casting their shadows into the content. Oh, and most of the content is themed to 'Vault of Heaven' in one way or another. Not to pat myself on the back, but to make all this work requires quite a bit of foresight and coordination between the content and the rig. Shit, just syncing the 3 dvd players is a hassle and is not full proof. At the end of the day you may or may not dig what gets thrown up on the screens, but it's our art project. Basically what I am saying is if your content is not designed to cater to our format I am not inclined to use it.

that being said, if you were a VJ with a solid real and could accomodate all 3 screens I would love to chat.

if not, there are other camps out there that invite folks with original content to screen on their rigs. Videogasm and starlight drive in come to mind for narrative works and I believe Disorient is soliciting more abstract standard VJ fare.

As per music, I am not the music nazi but our music nazi does not have a presence on this board so I liase for him. I can assure you that hardcore of any variety is not what we are looking for. Also, while I find I really dig that zone where trance and house merge you gotta know that there are approximately 72,452 camps that cater to trance. In the end, if you are really interested in spinning at hi! PM me and I will put you in touch with Scottino (we like to call him pushup). Also, remember, it's the playa. If you show up with records some night we will be inclined to work it out.

Phil'll be camped with Camp Ultra Violet @ 8:30 and Mercury just down the street from Shangri - La.

He's also a heckuva nice fella. Near Hi! caliber perhaps.

Movie for the Screens..

Post by Hottlotus » Sat Aug 07, 2004 8:54 pm

 Hello Stuart,

I was wondering if there is going to be some Projectors, I would love to present Burningman a mind-blowing, thought provokeing, spiritual awakening, music journey across 25 different countries.. it is a phenominal and inspirational Movie/Documentary called 1 Giant Leap.

If there is one movie to present that will lift us up and inspire, and get something out of a movie.. this is it! And It would be an Honor to present this to the burners to show this special feature. If this cant be done at Camp Hi, Let me know where I could present this where there will be a big screen and projector for this special showing. If its not too late, I would love to have this in the Events booklet. Stuart, your camp looks perfect to show this amazing movie, if anyone has seen 1 Giant leap, please express how much this movie will be an asset to the burningman experience! Not no ordinary documentary! It was a highlight of my SXSW film festival experience and I am willing to share this with the BM Community. Again, help me find a place for this DVD to be played at.

If you would like more info about this movie, go to www.1giantleap.com

Check out the reviews, here are some..

"Dazzling.” The Times

”Jubilant, unique, ambitious, epic, dramatic, life-affirming and positively absorbing…a musical and visual feast” DVD Monthly

“1 Giant Leap represents a genuinely ground-breaking audio-visual project of global dimensions”. The Daily Telegraph

“…whoever thought of putting Asha Bhosle and Michael Stipe together ought to be given the keys to heaven right now.” Essential World release. Mojo

“Gather round the modern world's campfire; the movie screen, television set, or laptop DVD player, and let this film's message wash over you in these troubled times. For "1 Giant Leap" is nothing short of an electronic drum circle, drawing the citizens of Earth together for a planet-wide cautionary pep talk. Mesmerizing and utterly profound, yet wonderfully accessible, 1 Giant Leap reminds us all of what we're capable of achieving”. * * * * Filmtreat.com

"An amaZing film by two genius film-makers..." Bono

(If you need more convinceing, I'll send you a the DVD and we can plan this showing out.. hundereds of burners will be enlightened by this masterpiece of visuals and collective tranceafying music that sings to the soul) Its that good! Your multi-screen set up will be AMAZING and will truely be memorable in the BM experience for a lifetime! So Stuart, if we can do this with your set up.. you are the man! If not.. lead me to the camp that can make this possible.

Best Regards,
Raven

Yo Stuart

Post by nostratomas » Tue Aug 17, 2004 11:42 am

It's your old neighbor and we will live side x side again. Our camp transcendent FunKtions is at 9:30 Mercury. Here is the shite we have going on:

Hello Beautiful People,

Please forward to any Burners or soon to be Burners who want to plug-in, we still have room and you still have time:

OK, so most of you have heard by now that my co-producer, co-King, the Anti-Fashion Mogul, nano-magician, master of disaster (especially on the turntables) Tommy Bigfinger has had to make the painful decision to participate this year's burn on his laptop via webcast. We will miss him whole fartedly. He has plans to masterbate to the thought of being there with us.

We will have several moments of non-silence for him & others unable to attend the burn. May the universe bless your filthy little playa souls.

Now down to business. Our camp has just manifested an amazing rig. Our address now has a large main structure on it. It's name is 'the Nome' and it sounds fucken fantastical & playa perfect. It is the brain child of our new campmates Joel & Marina, from Los Gatos (no, i never heard of the place either but its near San Jose). It has a full kitchen, living room, dining room for 15 people, outdoor shade area, mostly carpeted, it's pretty big (32' x 42' = 1344 square feet), and get this - IT SEALS UP IN A DUST STORM. Joel & Marina like to cook and plan on doing some group meals. Playa potluck dinner party anyone?

I know what your thinking and you are wrong. I didn't trade Tommy for 'the Nome' in some twisted deal with the Devil. It's just the universe & the playa providing some comfort for us and a welcome home for Marina, Joel & 'the Nome'. It has nothing to do with Mr. Bigfinger.

It does require effort to set-up and take down. But for those of us who have been on the playa with & without a shade structure - it sucks to be without. And as far as with & without a kitchen, dining room, living room and shower. PLEASE JUST GIVE ME THE COMFORTS OF HOME ON THE PLAYA DAMNIT.

So, what we need now is three or four people (able-bodied & ready to get the job done) to come with me to pick up 'the Nome' in Los Gatos (on Saturday 8/27/04) and bring him to the Playa and set it up on Sunday 8/27/04. I'll be driving my RV but we would also like to have the option of a truck/SUV/van with a good towing capacity (V-6 to V-8) and one of them big square hitch things.
As far as the pool goes...I.A.A.M. It's All About the Money. I know nobody forgets how priceless that was to have a fucken pool on the playa. Man that was the shit. We need to get some more camp donations to get to the $1200 mark, $700 of which will be returned if the pool & equipment comes back in one peace. Paypal anyone? Rena has volunteered to be our sexy Lifeguard and will be monitoring the Pool & equipment. Anybody have room on a credit card for the deposit or a portion there of? You can paypal William (last year's camp Engineer Extrodinair and the owner of the stuff who sadly enough won't be with us this year) and then he'll paypal you back before you get your bill.

DJ Dice is spinning as the house DJ and we have a few super phat guest DJ's at our camp coming to spin sets with Dice. Now that we have 'the Nome-ster' on board, we are back on track with our disco lights. No, not some cheesy set-up but a bunch of professional shit Tommy & I scored a few months back.

Queen Tantrika and Bobby are pimping out their RV as a Black Light Lounge. It sounds killer and I can't wait for my mushroom-filled, Vodka-soaked head to go play there.

And to last year's amazing camp mates, a little note, I have planned a simpler, funner, one art car venture. It will be more outrageously amazing and less work.

I would like input, feedback, comments, questions, DONATIONS, and anyone's ideas on making this a sweet burn for all of us.

Piece,

Tomas Verde
