Is Eplaya just an insiders club for 5 people?
That's not the way the mods work.Patience wrote:Oh please, no ridiculous ratings system. That's just what we need, more bullshit that obscures the real issues people could be discussing. Every time some asshole is on the DF (dumb fuck) side of an argument they can create 20 sock puppets to boost their "popularity" and then point to that as some sort of demented "proof" that their position is justified.
Now, who would advocate the implementation of a mod that seems practically designed to manipulate and deceive others like this?
looks around
just my point. how can anyone make any statement about any of the mods without checking them out first.
Got pot?
Damn my mistake. posted under the wrong sock.
ruined my count.
bummer
even though...........

Welcome to the modern day Star Chamber: Guilty until proven innocent is the rule with this crowd which means any mod that might help the eplaya will be shot down before it even has a chance. Thankfully the ETF has cooler heads and active participants that will not let a few loud mouths ruin the day and force their agendas onto the rest of us.

I think there are laws of stupidity much like there are laws of science. Drop a rock, it falls. Drop a rock in water it creates ripples. Create a mod that can be abused in that fashion and it will be abused.
I don't think a mod has to be "tried out' to see where it's shortcomings are.

As with anything, I wouldn't reject a rating system out of hand. But I'd look first at the logic of it, esp. in relation to the rest of Burning Man.
Ratings imply worth, or worthiness, and some sort of measures of arriving at it.
Worth is without doubt applied in judging art proposals, both from organizers of stand-alone installations, as well as the Man and the cruft underneath it. AFAIK this often involves vetting concepts iteratively, via a combination of face-to-face conversation, cornering the right people at parties, telephone tag, hard-copy text & renderings, email, web-based descriptions, videos, etc., with responses and in-house discussion as appropriate by the art dept. to flesh out the details and the feng shui of the whole thing wrt to the art/playa-space, theme-worthiness, etc. In the end, art-as-such happens, in a specific area of the event space.
Worth is doubtless applied in judging the acceptability and placement of theme camps, based on their proposals via the online registration form and the reputation of the camp and one or more of its organizers. In the end, theme camp happen, also in a specific area of the event space.
Worth, sans any reasonable doubt, is applied in approving and sustaining all the various Burning Man departments, wrt composition and function, both year-round and during the event, as well as all the various services supported by the LLC. I leave the details to the reader, but suffice it to say there's a lot of what you'd call "politics" in arriving at "worth".
Bottom line -- the eplaya doesn't have any specific function or mission, in relation to Burning Man or anything else, other than those invested by its frequenters. I'd argue that even the topic organization is designed in response to the patterns of past users, but the areas of heaviest use are the ones that are the most general. So, I see no logical way of arriving at worth or worthiness, much less a fair one. Given that it's essentially the online version of general-admission or walk-in camping, I see no great need to fuck with it too much, beyond the basic expectations of comportment to which we are accustomed at the event.

Hmmmm,
sounds to me like some people are more worried about finding out they are not as popular as they thought than just kicking back and having a good time.
It's pretty sad really.
I bet If the mods were installed, the most popular just may turn out to be a plant.
You know something.....I guess that would be pretty ego shatering.

the eplaya belongs to anyone who'll use it. I'm positive John Ashcroft is using it. Anything with "Bush's" name mentioned so many times has be visited by Ashcroft's borgs. If you're listening John, how about one of your weird christian songs?

You know, I always kind of suspected that I was just an aspect of someone else. (Although I thought I probably someone's hallucination more than an aspect revealed in a dream.)
Hmm. If I am an aspect of Larry, I think he probably needs to get therapy!

If there wasn't anything wrong why would bother posting this!
