Anyone familiar with Wolfsnout dust masks?

Post by geospyder » Sun Feb 07, 2010 7:50 pm

Last year I used 3M N95 masks.

They worked good for the dust but the metal at the top of my nose was uncomfortable and at times interferred with my goggles.

This year I'm thinking of using a Wolfsnout Dust Mask, pictured below. Anyone familiar with them?

If that plugs your nostrils off you gonna have a really dry mouth.

Everyone tries to beat the dust, but the dust ultimately wins. Half the time the masks are too cumbersome to bother with, so you decide to leave it in camp, get caught in a big blow and end up sucking in a gallon of dust or two anyway. But mask if ye must.

Last year, after 4 previous years of trying all sorts of masks I finally found the thing that works best for me...a Middle Eastern desert headwrap called the shemagh. I was amazed how well it worked. It tucks away neatly in your daybag, and when properly wrapped it keeps most of the dust out of your nose and lungs. It also works well with goggles. The thing I hate most about the masks is that they restrict breathing, conversation, and are hot and uncomfortable. The shemagh felt like an old friend.

Hey, several million Middle Easterners over a few thousand years can't be wrong!
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

They have been eating bugs for thousands of years also.

Depending on the bug, they can be pretty tasty.

That looks like the most uncomfortable mask I have ever seen.

My mask was great.

Lightweight, easy to decorate, and I could breathe and talk fine during the white-outs. I just had it hooked onto my backpack.

I was thinking uncomfortable also. It's an offshoot of a mask used by ATV, dirt bikers and off road racers. Supposed to work great but part of the design makes use of the wind pressure. That wouldn't be happening in a bike or walking situation. I'll be looking for something that isn't so uncomfortable on my nose as the metal piece on the face maks I used last year. The one that C.f.M. posted looks interesting. Still have a couple months.

It doesn't really seal your nose off, it looks like to me. And you couldn't talk.

And you can't glue rhinestones and cat whiskers onnit.

The white ones I used last year I was able to draw faces on them.

This looks quite durable. Can you change the mask filter inside? It appears so.

I have read a slew of threads about various options for masks: standard dust masks, scarves, bandanas, etc. Functionality is most important (especially when one has allergies in the first place).

But, that one in the title of this thread looks quite uncomfortable, especially in extremely hot conditions.

I had one of those and it gets kinda hot. and the filter fell out of mine but it was the cheap version. My friend had a $50 version that the filter screwed/clamped/was somehow mechanically stuck in as opposed to being stuck in by double-sided tape stuff, and he really liked it.

I always destroy the white construction ones by stuffing them in my backpack. oops.

Last year I ditched the dust mask in favor of scarf and I'll never go back. I was able to breathe well without sweating and didn't have any dust get through the scarf. Not that I'm a slave to fashion....but it a whole lot more stylish :)[/img]

I'll bring a few dustmasks (hospital kind) just in case, my aunt can get me a few handfuls for free...

But I'll probably be sticking with a scarf or two, hello! Fasion accesory, and you can match outfits, paint, or costumes.. and it's alot more flexible. Cut yourself on rebar? Use your scarf
Dust storm? Use your scarf
Chilly? Use your scarf....

Just seems like a quick, easy to store, multi-use item that's good on the go...

I've been using a harbor freight mask. It's made on neoprine (wetsuit stuff?) it's light works with googles and velcros on in a hurry....but the old bandana works for me.

My friend made a nifty mask out of one of those cheap paper painter's masks and a doo-rag headcloth. I have extra doorags around from our biking days, I'm going to give it a shot.

I buy the cheapest white painter's masks I can find.

If they get dirty or squashed, just pull out a clean one.

And they are great for gifting to others during unexpected dustings.

They work just fine.

I think my biggest aversion to this is that it doesn't really fit with the whole "leave no trace" ethos... I know you aren't just chucking them on the playa but they don't really recycle well.

And the $50 version you had does? That's nice to know. More details on that mask and where you recycled it, please.

Yep.

It's not like you use hundreds of them.
I'd say a few per burn.

And they are likely no harder to recycle than huge plastic gas masks.

I was happy to have a couple extra on hand last year to save some very nice but unprepared faces.
