Yes! Quite accurate. I should have thought of jig saw as that is how I am going at putting a chimney on my double barrel stove. if you wanna bring your barrel up to my house, you can use my plasma cutter.
otherwise, I'd still think, a jig saw, with a narrow, fine metal cutting blade will do detail work.......I'd think the dremel, if it's a circular type blade, will be very slow, and, problematic.

Good question....I've looked on the dremel sight, and all but one are for cutting grout or tile. When searching metal cutting bits, that last dremel bit came up. Not the cutting wheels, but a bit...like a drill bit.gyre wrote:Which dremel bit?
Wear full eye protection, especially with the cutting wheels.

If I abandon the skull design, and go with the Rune design, I might just do that ygmir. Thanx!ygmir wrote:if you wanna bring your barrel up to my house, you can use my plasma cutter.

there's a case modding video on you tube where the fellow uses various diameters of the composite cutting wheels to cut detailed shapes. He angles them down at 45 degrees, engraving the outline first so the wheels don't dance around. I've tried the side cutting bits in wood, and they are very squirrelly. They make a side cutting tungsten coated bit for stainless sinks I think.

There are some better suppliers for bits than dremel.
The wheels can be very quick, but tend to want to go in straight lines.
And they require some skill.
I would use the plasma.
Switch to the small bits for detail you can't do with the plasma.
I think the round bits you're talking about work, but have a very limited life.
Get the best ones you can.
The best drill bits are Tin coated cobalt, industrial source only.
I don't know if the cutting bits are made to that standard.
I can check.

I've seen bits for sidecutting, but, as Elorrum says, they can be squirrely.
some sort of fine tooth, narrow, reciprocating blade, if not a plasma.
the jigsaw, has a foot that sits against your material, holding it solid, and, you can watch the blade cutting edge, through your safety glasses just fine........
abrasive cutting wheels on thin material, get eaten up pretty darn fast, and, as Gyre points out, tend to want to go straight, if you're cutting very deep on them at all. If anything, perhaps rough cutting with a jigsaw, and, a grinder to finish the edges?
lots of ways to do it, one will work best for you.
Do you have some practice material? That might be a good idea.

I'm partial to Runes.......TomServo wrote:The skull design is part of my my camps sign. Is simple, but way to intricate for a cutting wheel. Might just go with the runes...and ill bring that promised bottle of absynth.
and, absinthe..........yay.........I'll bring some, too, we can share.
anyway,
it's a few of hours here from there, but, if you want to cut the barrel here, I have jig saws and a plasma cutter, so, you can try both.

Okay here's a nifty burn barrel possibility for you. Go to your metal recycling center, one that takes in appliances. What you want is the washing machine basket piece, the one that holds the clothes. I've paid anywhere from $15.00 to $25.00 for one and if you're lucky, they'll take it out for you. You now have a nice container with lots of holes pre-drilled for better draw. And it is CERAMIC coated, so it won't burn off! They'll be a center hole (about 1-14" in diameter approx) that you can run a pipe through and build a simple stand so it becomes a two piece unit, easy to pack up. I use them for out door fireplaces and have even grilled on them. The one in my yard is five years old and shows no signs of the coating be deteriorated. I will get a picture and send along in another post.

Guidelines for open fires, burn barrels, tiki torches etc within theme camps:
No fire barrels or open fires shall be left unattended. At least one camp member will be designated fire tender and be within visual distance at all times. If found unattended while lit, open fires or burn barrels may be extinguished and/or confiscated if there is sufficient hazard.
If winds pick up, all open fires must be put out immediately and burn barrels must be extinguished if they begin to throw sparks.
Open fire above 10 feet tall shall be secured from the wind and the safety perimeter increased appropriately.
Open fire or burn barrels must be extinguished at the request of any Ranger or Emergency Services personnel.
A 20-foot Zone around the fire must be free of any flammable materials, such as but not limited to: cloth, paper, tents, plastic, etc.
All liquid fuels must be kept at least 50 feet away from any open flame. Please check out the guidelines for the storage of fuels at Burning Man.
A supply of at least 5 gallons of water must be kept on hand to extinguish the fire in case of high winds (wind can blow embers and sparks a long distance on the playa!) or other hazards.
Burn barrels shall be secured and constructed in a way that the burning surface is at least 6 inches from the playa to prevent baking or scarring of the playa surface.
Note: please remember that gasoline is a dangerous fuel to use to start fires. Explosive vapors can instantly build up as it is applied and as the fire is lit it can flash and burn you!

Looks like he wants everyone to know the actual rules at BM regarding how to properly not burn down your neighbors tent with a burn barrel, nuthin' wrong with that.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.
Re: Burn Barrel question...
tip: dont pour kerosene into your burn barrel
it will leak out all over the place while on fire.
some people dont think.

Re: Burn Barrel question...
Funny you would mention get your shit burned up. That did happen to me two years ago when somebody decided to bring a flame thrower and light bottle rockets, or some other illegal fireworks. As a result, my shade structure all the sudden had air vents that I hadn't intended from their burning embers.
Glad that camp had a "good burn" while I get to spend another 75$ to replace fabric for my structure. Now replacing my whole camp and possible a camp mate or two might be a bit more challenging, especially due to all that leaking kerosine.

Re: Burn Barrel question...

This is my double barrel warming stove. It works well but there are several improvements I could make. It could use a wider chimney on the top for better draft and more air holes for the fire when the door is closed.
I'm planning on making another stove sort of like this one but with a cooking surface on it and more user friendly for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows.
My main idea behind this stove was to have a radiator heating device and to have a well enough contained fire that if the wind kicked up or if it was left alone it would not pose a fire hazard at all.
BTW. Splitting wood is very moopy. I'm planning a wood particle containment system and splitting area right next to the stove. Might even use the splitting wood in a tire trick.

Re: Burn Barrel question...
I think you may need a longer chimney.
I built one of the Sotz designs.
I recommend you read their guidelines.
I found a couple of heavy nickel plated syrup barrels.
The only thing I was able to save was the door.
I still have an 11 gauge stainless chimney made to swedish standards.
I was planning to use water drums around the heater as mass heat storage.
The btus water can hold are amazing.
Don't forget heat shields.

Re: Burn Barrel question...
Yeah I have an extension for the chimney to promote draft but the width of the chimney is just not sufficient. This is a camping warming stove and so heat shields would be counter productive. This type of stove is much too dangerous to use inside a structure. I've seen them used in cabins and shops but you wouldn't catch me doing it. Making the same thing out of 30 inch high pressure natural gas mainline and I might use it in a shop with a good hearth.
