How to get 25-30 ties?

Post by FaeTora » Thu Jun 17, 2010 12:20 pm

I have an idea for an outfit for the playa which is made entirely out of neckties. The only thing is finding white ties that are inexpensive is hard. I've checked out bulk stores and the thrift stores so far don't have any white or light colored ties that I might be able to bleach out.

Any suggestions or places to look?

Thanks!

You can paint any neck-tie white. Use a paint that remains flexible.

Heck, in a day on the Playa it will be beige anyway, regardless of base color.

Just get any old tie from the thrift store, make your stuff. On playa, drag it arround on any street. Instant Playa drab.

I just finished my tie kilt costume for BM yesterday. It was easier to find old red power ties. I paid about $1 ea at the thrift store. Most were like new.

I made a dress out of red white & blue silk ties in 2008, I found them all at garage sales and estate sales. Also keep an eye out for charity rummage sales (like churches or rotary club), those are great for finding out-of date clothes including lots of ties.

If you could use another color, I found a sale on ebay for 100 silk ties for $36

What color? If I could bleach them out it would be fine. But say black I don't think would bleach well enough.

Exactly! I know where there's this old pickup truck with a zillion ties all over it... the owner would probably trade some for barbies or wine.

Tieland? Are you serious or joking? Remember I'm a birgin. But if your serious that would be great.

I'm still a little uncertain about bleaching dark ties. Won't it damages them before they become white?

Just keep looking at thrift stores. They've never failed me. Put an ad on Craigslist and Freecycle. Make your own.

That sounds fantastic! It would also be cool to have a "donate a tie" stand at the Playa. Maybe for future costumes. Something about bringing a tie to BRC and handing it over seems fun and appropriate. LOL

Well I think I figured out how to do it, and I found someone to sew it (as it requires actual sewing knowledge to make). Its cheesier than one could imagine but I don't care. Its an outfit made of white ties and I will have a zippered pouch that I have on me that has fabric markers. Everyone that wants to can write on the ties. It's my personal yearbook that will go up onto a clear plastic bust at home and hang from my ceiling so you can see all sides of it. A black version will go with me to Flipside in 2011 and will reside on the other side of the room.

Ah, the ties that bind. :D Told you it was cheesy.

It actually will have no skirt. It will fit like a bathing suit with gaps between the tie layers and ties going down one leg. The other leg will have no ties and I will have an elastic band that holds on the pouch of markers (zippered to keep them from become MOOP).

If I could find anything like it I would show you all a picture, but to be honest I never have. Doesn't mean it hasn't been done. Just that I haven't seen a picture for it.

More like this sorta. but they would continue down one leg and be thicker because of it being ties, etc. It was taken with my camera phone so its not great.

 Thanks. That one is just cloth I believe. I actually found the picture at the salon where I get my hair cut. I don't know if mine will be better, but the ties are imporant. The only other part is to figure out how to take off the bottom to pee. I'm thinking the same closure as baby's onesies have, but metal gets hot and that close to sensitive areas with no underwear. Maynot be a good idea.

thrift stores, garage sales, rummage sales.

I've have hundreds of vintage ties, all from somewhere cheap, all of which I wear with my piles of suits. I don't think I've paid more than $10 for any of them, and thats for the hand painted silk ones from the 40's. For the ones you want, I wouldn't expect to pay much more than a buck. I have a friend who's a tie artist who uses them by the container full:

You might want to make a minor modification however- unless you plan on buying new ties in exactly the color that you want, you might be better off going with a "pale" outfit for BurningMan and a "dark" outfit for Flipside.

Pales can be white, yellow, pink, light blues, beige....

Darks: black, grey, dark red & blues, purples....

You can even use patterned ties as long as the pattern is over-all dark or light.

This will give you more flexibility in your hunt and make the whole thing easier to gather.

yeah I tried that. Here there are a bunch of ties that are dark... but I have yet to find more than one tie used that was light in color. I have been to 5 thrift stores in three parts of town. I didn't think it would be that hard to find light ties.

FT, if you are afraid of metal getting warm, just dont make the open part betweeen legs and move it more front or back....and or use this

I mean the stripes on the shoe...sorry I have no idea how it is called in english...we call it dry zipper...but again you might to not want to have that right in the middle but moved to the front or back again...

State side its called Velcro (which is actuallly a manufactures name). The real name in English is hook and loop tape.

I just wonder how that would hold up on the playa.
