Looks like Kinetic Cab Company will be at 9:00 and Esplanade, with our "taxi stand" straight across Esplanade.

And yes, this is Kinetic Sculpture Racing Central for 2010.

No centralized resource for theme camp placements?

Post by dusty_nipples » Tue Jul 06, 2010 8:33 am

So let me get this straight... because I'm having a hard time grasping the lunacy of it. There will be no published master list of theme camp placement this year because a few camps requested placement, but then wanted to be kept private? So the needs of a select few camps supercede the needs of the entire community?

So now, we have no centralized resource to refer to until we actually arrive on the playa and get a list or something at the gate? Well that totally sucks. They should have asked up front if a camp wanted to be kept private, and just kept them off the master list. It's a no brainer.

Ditto. I mean, why even bother to get placed if you don't want anyone to know where you are? If that's the case stay in the areas not reserved for theme camps. Stupid stupid stupid. But then again, what do you expect from a bunch of stoned burners? THe vast majority of us want to get placed and listed so people can find us. You have to wonder what subgenious thought to himself, "I know! Let's make everyone jump through hoops to get listed and then make sure nobody knows where they are! That'll take radical self-reliance to a new level entirely!"

FWIW, we're still at 3:30 and Edinburgh.

Mud Skipper Urban Decay Cafe is at 7:30 and D this year, serving Root Beer Floats to all.

they aren't just going to publish those who want to be published and leave those others out? seems a little weird to me.

No kidding. How hard would have been to add "Would you like to be on a published master list of theme camps? [ ] yes [ ] no"?

There "should be" a map like http://earth.burningman.com/brc/2009/ this one put out before the burn starts. What people are bitching about is the PRIVATE master list that usually goes out to placed camps when they get their placement. This list invariably would be posted here within minutes of being sent out. I see it as the equivalent of the folks that tear down street signs.

There are camps with perfectly good reasons for not wanting their location published here. I respect that.

So, lets look at the facts objectively:
  • We've NEVER had ANY camp placement locations available to us this early before.
  • Camps that want to make their locations known can do that.
  • The only reason we had complete camp lists right after the placement announcement is because some douche posted it after being asked not to.
  • Blame the douches that posted said lists after being told not to for the rest of us not getting lists.
  • The camps that don't want to be on the map have good reasons for it and should have been respected.
  • A complete list of camps that DO want to be listed on the map WILL (most likely) be posted well in advance of the burn.
There is a reason that folks that put the most effort into participating in the burn tend to avoid even looking at this forum people. It seems to attract the least common denominator of bitching, whining, complaining and quite frankly rude insulting comments about just about every aspect of anything. Folks have been working hard, for free, to get the placements done in record time this year. The fact that we don't have a complete placement list now isn't due to them, thank the douches who post it.

I respect that Kestrel.

Thanks for working hard on it. Bell Camp appreciates it.

We're at 4:30 & F. Come and ring the bell.

Cheers.

Oh please, the BORG has posted that super secret list in the same spot on their website forever. All that changes is the year digit on the URL.

Security through obscurity. No one is leaking their douche. Just predictability. Get of yer high hippie horse.

The solution is simple; remove the entries of camps requesting privacy. Real easy fix.

Lots of people have worked very hard to provide interactive maps and other cool stuff based on that list. It is a shame the BORG staff responsie for this was so myopic in their decision.

One can only hope the API at some point provides that data, preferably before the event starts.

Well, of course everything is an easy fix if you aren't the one that has to fix it. I think you missed my point that people are whining about something that was never available at this point ever anyway. IF a list of camps that want to be listed doesn't come out before the burn then fine, bitch away. But at this point people should chill.

What in the world are you talking about? Its not easy, it's trivial.

As to your point, once you start publishing stuff on the web, its out there, public information and you have no control anymore how that gets used. The intent becomes irrelevant.

I'd much rather not ascribe to your chill agenda in exchange for the rich digital content that was fostered by those lists. The whole place is poorer for its absence.

Sounds like you must have good technical knowledge and strong motivation. Maybe you can look into volunteering to do this so it can get posted. I'm sure they would welcome the help.

I would think anonymity conflicts with several of The 10 Principles.

Radical Inclusion
Gifting
Decommodification
Radical Self-reliance
Radical Self-expression
Communal Effort
Civic Responsibility
Leaving No Trace
Participation
Immediacy

Since one ring is missing this year, from last year's layout, do the potties remain in the same locales? (Between C & D and H & I )

like someone said earlier in this thread, some camps have their own perfectly valid reasons for not wanting their address posted. Stiffy lube wants to keep it low key, tuna guys would totally be overrun, i still haven't had any of their tuna, but am always on the lookout. some of the other adult sex type camps want to keep things on the dl. etc.etc.etc. lost of these camps are inclusive and are loved by many on the playa.

I am beginning to think that the Tuna Guys are a myth made up by rangers for their own amusement. I tried for days last year to find them to no avail. Tuna guys! If you are out there, tell me where you are, I'll bring you 20yo scotch!

KestrelSF, I was not complaining that a list wasn't released NOW. I was commenting that it sounded like a master list wouldn't be published AT ALL. If I understand your posts correctly, it seems like there may be a master list before the burn. I certainly hope so!

It would be in good spirit of the placement team told the community what the plans were. It would kinda suck if the community went to great lengths to compile a list (which would certainly be incomplete), and then just before the burn one got published. Or we wait for one to get published and it never does... and find there's not enough time to make one happen.

I guess the bottom line is, we've grown to depend on that list. Do you know... will one get published?

One of them has shown up on this board.

Of course, this board is on the internet meaning that 50% of it is totally made up. I think that Burningman is a Myth, but the Tuna Guys are Real.
Pity as I don't like seafood, and the event sounds like a better fit for me.

Personally I like to look at a master list myself and I wish they would just give an option to camps to be included on the master list or not. I want to know who my neighbors are and I want to know where camps I love are placed as well.

I decided to go ahead and put together an unofficial placement list based off of what people have posted here and on tribe. You can checkout the spreadsheet at http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key= ... RS2c&hl=en

If you would like me to add your camp to the spreadsheet then please fill out this form: http://spreadsheets0.google.com/viewfor ... VkxUd0E6MQ

Costco Soulmate Trading Outlet hopes to celebrate it's 13th year on playa by bankrupting the last of BRC's mom and pop soulmate stores. Like the mega-corporate behemoth we've become, we'll be price fixing and cornering the distribution chain from our newest location at Florence and 9:00.
