... BREEZY TODAY AND FRIDAY FOLLOWED BY MUCH COOLER TEMPERATURES THIS WEEKEND...

STRONG... COLD LOW PRESSURE IN THE GULF OF ALASKA WILL MOVE TOWARD THE AREA TODAY AND FRIDAY. THIS LOW WILL PUSH A STRONG COLD FRONT ACROSS THE AREA FRIDAY. SOUTHWEST TO WEST WINDS WILL GUST UP TO 40 MPH STARTING TODAY AND CONTINUING FRIDAY AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT. ISOLATED TO SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL ALSO AFFECT THE AREA TODAY... MAINLY EAST AND SOUTH OF RENO.

BEHIND THE FRONT... MUCH COLDER TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED THIS WEEKEND. HIGH TEMPERATURES ON SUNDAY WILL BE IN THE 50S AND 60S... WHICH WILL BE 30 TO 40 DEGREES COLDER.

IN ADDITION... SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE AS THE LOW SETTLES OVERHEAD LATE SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY. WITH THE COLD TEMPERATURES... SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE IN THE SIERRA ABOVE 9000 FEET THIS WEEKEND. ANYONE PLANNING TRAVEL IN THE HIGH SIERRA THIS WEEKEND SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR WINTER-LIKE CONDITIONS.

Another item to add to the list. Plastic bags for the shoes when slipping and sliding.

Snow above 9000 ft? That's pretty high. Are any roads in the sierras above that height? I'm hoping to crash in Truckee Sunday night, so I'm hoping I don't need chains :-)

Dont think your going to have a problem bud. even if it did snow.. most likely there would be NO sticking & deff. no accumulation on the roads.
Just be careful if the roads are wet.

Donner pass is just over 7000 feet. Snow shouldn't be a problem - in theory.

Blah Blah winter like conditions!! I have lived in Northern Nevada for 40 years and the media likes to blow things out of porportion. Its not going to snow over Donner Pass, so don't be worried. Im not a meteorologist but all I can say is that in BRC its going to be fucking hot and windy!!! And the nights are going to be cool just as always. Don't take too much about what the news says and don't freak out. Some people here are anal and get too involved and say what the humidity and air pressure is, and pollen count, and wind direction, and what stars are aligned etc...bottom line is its going to be fucking hot and windy!! maybe we will get a cloud cover.

I'm sitting this second on the shores of South Lake Tahoe at a beach house, and am watching the crazy grey clouds build in the mountains build.. I swear it looks like it's going to snow.

..and the WIND. Wow. Huge gusts forming mini wind devils over the lake and huge waves.. I'd say 40 mph gusts easy at times. Huge cool down up here already. Watching the grey clouds blow west to east on their way over to NV.

So, it seems like this thing is speeding up which is a good thing. I'm thinking it will blow through quicker and sooner than expected..

Technically, neither is Mike Alger, but, when they, the media, blows things out of proportion, it gets me OT

... BREEZY TODAY WITH SHOWERS AND MUCH COOLER WEATHER THROUGH SUNDAY...

A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM FOR LATE AUGUST MOVING INTO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA WILL PUSH A COLD FRONT THROUGH THE SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA TODAY. WIND GUSTS OF 30 TO 40 MPH WILL CONTINUE TODAY IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS... WITH GUSTS UP TO 75 MPH POSSIBLE ON THE SIERRA RIDGES.

AS THE FRONT PASSES MUCH COOLER AIR WILL MOVE INTO THE AREA BY THIS AFTERNOON. HIGHS ON SUNDAY WILL BE IN THE 60S FOR THE NEVADA VALLEYS WITH 50S FOR THE SIERRA. IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE SIERRA... VALUES WILL DROP INTO THE UPPER 20S TO MID 30S LATER TODAY. THOSE PLANNING BACKCOUNTY ACTIVITIES THIS WEEKEND SHOULD PREPARE FOR THE UNSEASONABLY COLD CONDITIONS IN THE UPPER ELEVATIONS.

FOR SUNDAY NIGHT... AS THE LOW MOVES EAST OF THE AREA... SKIES WILL CLEAR WITH STRONG RADIATIONAL COOLING. THIS WILL ALLOW LOW TEMPERATURE VALUES IN THE SIERRA VALLEYS TO DROP INTO THE UPPER 20S... WITH MID 30S POSSIBLE IN SOME VALLEYS OF NORTHEAST CALIFORNIA AND WESTERN NEVADA. THOSE WITH SENSITIVE OUTDOOR PLANTS SHOULD CONSIDER COVERING THEM OR IF POSSIBLE... MOVE THE PLANTS INDOORS.

IN ADDITION TO MUCH COOLER TEMPERATURES... SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE AS THE LOW REACHES THE AREA THIS EVENING AND SUNDAY. SNOW LEVELS COULD DROP AS LOW AS 8000 TO 8500 FEET TONIGHT AND SUNDAY... WITH AN INCH OR TWO OF SNOW POSSIBLE IN THE UPPER ELEVATIONS OF THE SIERRA.

Just got off work and my car says 52 degrees here in Reno. I will say that 52 feels a helluva lot colder than it should. Only 2 days ago it was 100. Damn Nevada...

Word today (Sunday, 29 Aug) is that there's rain. Weather calls for showers on into the night (a rare thing) and cold temps hovering around 35 degrees. It'll clear up into the week but this suggests to me that there'll be cool to cold night to have to contend with for the duration of the event.

This is according to the most recent update from www.weather.com for Gerlach.
Tuesdays high is forcasted to be 83, gradually rising through the week to around 90 on Friday. Lows are forcasted to be in the low to mid 50s from Tuesday on. Close to "average." Today and Monday look like the coolest days.
Still a chance of 1-2 inches of snow 8000 to 9000 ft. Tonights lows (COULD) dip into the 30s in the valleys of Nevada, which would include the Black Rock Desert.
