This is essentially what we do to dry hoses at my FD present day. We recently graduated to something like a metal coat rack on steroids. Vertical accordion folds. A box fan greatly speeds drying.

Master streams are fun!!! Especially so when aimed at your favorite Lieutenant. Oh sweet payback. Just don't release that thing from it's base when the pressure is on it...Not good.

Sounds like you need a trailer with a couple thousand gallons on it, Ygmir. Well... as much as the truck can pull up the steepest hills around there. Water weighs something like 8 pounds per gallon, IIRC.
yeah, I've got a 400 gal. "water buffalo" (for those familiar with military gear), but, that won't last long.

don't throw stuff away!!!!
we can trade. ........................

now, I gotta start getting hardware and hoses.........
Here's a link for ya, we used to get stuff on the FD from here, I've bought some stuff from them as well Heiman Fire Equipment

1.5" line work great for one person, especially a guy your size. 2.5" is a bit more to handle, keep your psi lower for that one.

Yep, I do remember the water buffalos as well :D

Have you tried to draft water yet?
yeah, I'm checking all over........
nope, I don't have a draft hose of proper size, yet. the one I have, has the wrong fittings, so, I have to find an adapter, or, get the right hose.

Take 1:  Take 2:

We never removed our deck guns from the mount nor did we use monitors on the ground but I could see what with the gpm/psi behind them that they could get a bit freaky if lost. I remember as a kid watching a structure fire at a bar, the band had gotten their drum set and moved it onto the sidewalk a few doors down. Then, a fire hose became charged without anyone on the nozzle and began whipping around amongst the drum set, quickly destroying it until Barney Fife jumped upon the hose. Later, in firefighter 1 school, we had to tame our own flailing 1.5", and remembering the previous, I was a bit nervous. But up the hose we climbed until we wrassled that devil down. It was actually kinda fun, got my ass back in line to do it again.

A point to remember Ygmir

If your intake and discharge pipes are threaded they are probably NPT.

Also, check with your local FD, they may have old hose they are throwing out that you may be able to have.
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

yeah, I think some are NPT, but, some seem a very coarse thread.

I've wrassled flailing air hoses, when cut off a jackhammer 8' down in a ditch.......so, am pretty familiar with the "the snake".....

Finally, pictures of the New Junk:

This thing is called the Dauntless Dirigible, and it is a Kinetic Racing Sculpture. That is, it is a pedal-powered amphibious all-terrain artistic vehicle. It was built – at great expense – in 1999 for the Sacramento Kinetic Sculpture Race (a.k.a. the River Otter Amphibious Race). That race ran for five years, and Dauntless has been sitting untouched in a vacant building since 2003.

The man in charge of it is retiring and will no longer have access to the storage building, so the decision was made to scrap old Dauntless. But he e-mailed me first, and asked if I could save it. My answer, of course, was… “Oh, well, darn, if I must.â€

"Collection".... That's is a mixed blessing for me. I don't want my barn to become a museum. I want to use these things! Even more, I want to see people using and enjoying these things! But every time I pick up a tool... a whole week rushes by and my wallet springs a Titanic-size leak. So progress will be slow.

But yeah, some of this Stuff is pretty cool.

And I can take shortcuts -- I could make Dauntless ready for land-use only. It would be a hit in any parade, and I already enjoy riding goofy stuff in parades.

I ran a 25 gallon test in the centrifuge yesterday.

details:
WMO, mixed with 25% diesel, to thin for lower viscosity
ambient temp:50 deg. F
feed rate:8GPH (approx.) as recommended my manufacturer/tech.

well,
I did find one major thing:
screen the raw oil, from the barrel, before entering the feed
tube........because, if a big "glop" of goo gets into, and plugs the feed
tube, the oil that is flowing in from the barrel, has no problem overflowing
the feed cone and running down the centrifuge, and table.
Luckily, I was working in the shop, so, looked and caught it before it over
ran the sawdust I had on the table (for spill control) and onto the floor.

I now have a screen in the feed cone.

The centrifuge took an amazing (to me anyway) amount of water and
metal/carbon (paste) , out of the oil. Especially, considering this barrel
had sat for a full year, out doors, getting quite hot in the summer.
That should have allowed for any water and "stuff" to settle out. I drew the
oil, from just above the bottom of the barrel, so as to let any settled
"stuff" to remain.
To me, this indicates what was spun out of the oil, was suspended, probably
as a colloid, in the oil.

Any thoughts here would be appreciated.

"cone of carbon and metal" note coating of carbon and "goo" on inside of bowl, as well.

...kewl junk...and stuff! Impressive actually...

...what I have is snowed in. Much of it will be donated after thaw.
I'll post a photo for anyone close to Tahoe, the rest will be brought to Reno regional BM donation places. I need space, less stuff. Hopefully a win win...

Right, the Dauntless Dirigible is far too pretty to call "junk". But mechanically it is a Royal Disaster With Gold Braids And Oak Leaf Clusters. (Also known as a Cluster Fumble ;) )

My buddy Peter was here today and we did some brainstorming -- primarily identifying the engineering problems, and there are many. But we also figured out some options. Now... keep in mind that we are designing for Kinetic Sculpture Racing also. In KSR we need to tackle rough terrain, steep hills and open water. Much easier to design just for Black Rock City.

One option is to install the "balloon" part of DD onto a different chassis. It looks like it will fit on the outriggers of the Rhoades Car.

It also looks like the "balloon" will fit on the Beach Party Buggy. We may or may not need to remove the roll cage -- no big deal either way. This may be the quickest way to get a well-functioning machine going. Here is the Beach Party Buggy on the Playa in 2010:

Image

But for now we have (once again!) confirmed that money and craftsmanship are not enough. A vehicle builder also needs to understand the operating dynamics of the vehicle under the circumstances it will be used. That's where the Dauntless Dirigible came up short, and somebody's USD 20.000 became my... Junk.

Same with the Beach Party Buggy, although it is not mine -- it is only on indefinite loan to me. I have already corrected many of the "usual" problems with this one, including converting it from four wheels to three.

I was so happy to find it.
only 2600 miles.
the guy bought it at 60 years old, rode a little, and parked it in 03, inside storage.

and he decided to sell it cheap (IMO).
so, here I am.

now, I have to get a motorcycle endorsement on my license.
dang.

yeah, a beast.......I'll look like little bo peep riding it.

And for my contribution to this thread (and my 900th post woohoo) I give you a pic of a rather well used but still very serviceable Ramco 12x40 engine lathe I picked up for a couple hundred. Good tight bearings and low backlash, runs, gears all good, missing the cross slide and compound but came with lots of tooling. Now looking to find a slide with a female dovetail @ 2" x 2.5" and I'll be a lathe turning freak 8)

It followed me home today. Free, yes. Been sitting in a nice dry garage, with a dust cover over it, untouched for 15 years. Ran fine when parked. It should be pretty easy to get it going. I'm thinking sell the fairing and such, then build MV around the rest.
