I can reduce frequency and strength of the lozenges (first thing in the morning, after a meal) and forsee this finishing up in about three weeks. BRAVO!!

I was wondering when you'd be taking the plunge, looks like day 5! *applause*

Unsolicited advice;
Drink LOTS of water, deep breathe, don't forget fat cells can release the tar/chemicals months/years later and give you a wierd craving!
Beat cravings to the punch! Don't cave in. Be a ROCK. A stubourn MULE.

(Radical but...I will go to my doctor, take Valium and go to bed for a week, yikes, it worked last time! I lasted a few years, then uh, a few years ago, I had one VERY strange day and I slipped up.....arg!)

Quit smokeing a lot of times.. Stop smoking after second heart attack at 46.. Doctor told me at the frst one (44) it was behind heavy smoking.. Meanest thing I ever did to myself.. 25 years now.. No more attacks.. The lungs are damaged bryond repair.. But I saved a lot of money.. Now when my youngest comes over he has to leave his coat outside.. The third hand smoke affects me.

I used toothpicks when I quit. People got so used to seeing me with a toothpick in my mouth that a friend actually bought me a gold one from Tiffany.

i quit smoking, for good this time i think, in August. i'd quit before, through each of my pregnancies, but it's easy to quit when you're knocked up. (it makes you want to vomit, lol) i started again each time, though. stupid me.

i started making a lot of healthier choices and stuff last year, and came to a point where physically and financially, smoking had to go. it sucked. bad. i did it cold turkey, as they say. it took me weeks to get past the temper flares and crying jags. it it came real close to throwing me in to a full blown depression episode again. i hadn't realized how much i used it as a self regulator, a method of self control.

but i'm stubborn and made it through. i'm really glad. you should have seen me running around like a nut sniffing everything as my sense of smell came back! ;)

That's one of the best things about being raised as a Mormon, no one in the family smoked, so I never did. I think I've smoked six cigarettes in my whole life.

yep I got that daratheresa. I'm a lifetime self-medicator. I got rid of most of the obvious quick fixes, last item after tobacco is going to be the hardest I think: food. I'm trying to learn to live with the delayed gratification benefits of exercise and diet, being conscious of what I'm consuming and for what reasons. Caffeine was never a good tool for me, gives me hair-trigger in stressful situations, so I cut way way down on that. I like my morning cup... I'm open to examining it further, but not at the moment. I know how much better I feel when things are in balance, but it doesn't stay in the front of my mind when I don't feel right. I didn't start smoking until I stopped drinking... no more substituting now.

I've cut down to one cup of joe a day, my nerve pain seems lessened, energy is fine with fresh fruit/vegies

I was impressed when I noticed 50% or more?! of the population of BRC didn't smoke, I was glad about that.

The last time I quit, my face would feel red & on fire, I'd look in the mirror and I looked fine, I'd wet my face and the craving would go away within minutes

Elorrum, you'll be setting a good example for me. Go, go, go, win! I'll tag along

I went for a serene walk in the forest yesterday, next time I'll use my old snow shoes, we have a beautiful, deep Sierra snow pack this year, snow shoes are a must! The loudest noise was my heavy breathing

"Three cheers and a tiger" for all who quit smoking! But I also was lucky to grow up in a smoke free home.

Good news and bad news:
My new doctor has signed me up for a program called Live Well. I don't know much about it yet, but it seems to involve everything from physical therapy to nutrition lessons to mental health counseling. And I need all of that!
Bad news is the x-rays show I have "moderately severe" damage to a couple of my neck joints. That is what pinches some nerves and sets my arm on fire when I bicycle. Actually, I'll call it good news that we now know what is causing it. That's the first step to minimizing the problem.

It has been so darn cold I have not walked much lately, but weight holding around 205. A few days ago my buddy Peter came over and helped me set up the scaffolding at the front of my still-unfinished barn. Construction work is good for using up calories also.

It was explained to me by a trainer recently, that when doing cardio, the first 30 minutes works off the crap that you ate today, and any time after that works off your lingering body fat that you really want to lose. The routine exercise works on keeping your body toned and the muscles strong, while working off some calories as well.

As far as smoking, stop at any cost while you still have your health. A guy at work just had a half of lung removed. While his co-workers were discussing it, they were puffing their brains out. The worker with lung cancer is in his mid-50's and probably will not survive this.

Working outside in the cold you will burn more calories..

But you should not be galping cold air..

Lost a good friend to hypother?? that way.. He was just fifty.. Went out and split the evening wood.. Come and went to bed/sleep and passed.. Doctor said his lungs were colder than the rest of him. His widow gives me new scarf every year.. But I wear a dirt bike face filter to keep the lungs warm..

how'd you make out? been sending you good thoughts. time at my mom's still makes me want to drink and smoke. nice lady but queen of the "i like your new pants, it's a shame you didn't work off 10 more pounds before you bought them"

I second Shambalalalala. Your quality of life will be so much better if you quit now.

i know a respiration therapist who chain smokes. makes no sense to me whatsoever. addiction is a nasty mother

Sorry 'bout your friend.

It was sunny yesterday, in the mid 60's, my heavy breathing was due to the self absorbed, idiotic, chemically addicted, habit of smoking...(yes I heard you Sham!! on BOTH, I'm listening 30 mins+ for me) anyhow, I've been gearing up to stop the flippin' cigs soon, maybe I'll do a BON FIRE to kick off my day one. I think I'll accelrate the date and accelerate my health plan by light years....Elorrum, don't fail me or you! and whoever else might be on the hook, ugh, time to swim free of that nasty fisherman, BIG TOBACCO, fuck you!! [strange rant over]

Was out of town for a funeral so the exercise/food diary were put aside. Jumping back on the treadmill tonight after work and food diary started up again. Averaging 5-6 times a week on treadmill and 1350 calories a day on food diary...I feel like last weekend when I was out of town I really fell off the wagon, but fuck it. What's past is past...just gotta bear down, keep myself busy and write everything i eat down.

Please be careful Elliot, hopefully they have non or minimally invasive treatments, if surgery were ever required, you'd probably need a helper around for the recovery, best not to push it.

Chicken and spinach salad, with carrots, raisins, sunflower seeds and feta cheese for lunch. Yum. I do well if I bake a pan of chicken thighs, then graze from it for a week. I prefer spinach to lettuce because it stays fresher longer. I have always adored raisins all my life, so that's an easy snack for me.
