I suppose saying something like "I'm going to watch extra porn tonight to show my solidarity for my egyptian brothers" is really, really uncalled for.
ha!

really, really funny, though. a great study in contrasts. or something. lol.

..btw - for anyone needing to make an emergency contact with friends or family in Egypt now, you could try using the Ham (amateur) Radio network...the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) in your area should be able to set you up to make a "Radiogram" (free of charge normally), and even possibly get a response. It is not quick, but can work even when phones, etc are out.

Actually, this is precisely what our constitution is set up to prevent and that Eisenhower warned us about--and for good reasons. Let's hope this friendship between the army and the people doesn't have any unintended consequences--for the people.

i know. :)

but there are days when i'd like to see it ALL burn, just to see what would rise up out of the ashes.

(not really meant as an anti-government statement, more of an anti-everything statement.)

and back to the original point, i don't think our own government would hesitate to take the internet down if faced with "unruly" citizens. and i don't think it would matter one bit. i think that this uprising is still going on is pretty decent proof of concept.

One can never separate politics from the economy. There is no greater focal point in the economy than JOBS. This is a quote from Prechter;
"Two- thirds of Egypt's 80 million people are below 30 and many have no jobs. About 40 percent of Egyptians live on less than $2 a day." Reuters, 1/28/11
http://www.elliottwave.com/freeupdates/ ... trend.aspx
This isn't going to just "go away". Jobs are not going to appear, regardless of corruption.
Even China has had to cut back on the number of people that they send on to higher education. There were / are NO slots for them. China is growing and has no need for all the educated people it can produce. What does that say for Egypt.

The average person in Saudi Arabia has 1/3 the income of 30 years ago. What does that say for overpopulation? What does it say for globalization? Cairo subsidizes basic food. How long can that go on? Egypt has a birth rate of 2.66. Not that bad but, cumulatively, it can get pretty crowded. Other countries are far worse;

The young in the Middle-East are not going to be happy with globalization and automation.

Well, it appears that yanks will be used to protect israel from egypt.

It also seems that Al Jazeera has been muzzled in Egypt;
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middl ... 94161.html
Reportedly, Muburak told the army to shoot at whatever they felt like shooting;
http://www.presstv.ir/detail/162767.html
I was in Egypt during the Achille-Lauro incident. Many of the people were real excitable. There was a Jeep with a mounted .50 in front of the U.S. embassy. All the deaths are going To make it impossible to "backtrack".To a certain extent, these people are being impoverished by market forces, not by corrupt leaders.
Yemen is a real problem area. It has a very high birthrate and little employment. Iran sits on an oil choke-point,,, The straights of Hormuz. Yemen sits on another choke point,,, The Vale of Tears. Should Yemen explode and attack a ship, Lloyds will hike up insurance rates in the gulf and mess things up good.
It appears to me that many of the protesters are out in force because of employment problems. Jordan was not at all repressive when I visited. Now, They're clamoring for the heads of GOV. It's very convenient to blame market / economic problems on GOV.
There is no way out when tens of millions want jobs.

The nightmare scenario is of course, that of a radicalized Islamic regime, possibly an Al Qaeda proxy, sitting astride the Suez Canal and telling the West what we can and can't ship through there.
We installed Mubarak in Egypt to prevent this very situation.

maybe we ought not "install" anyone in other countries. ;) maybe we ought to keep our damn hands to ourselves.

i could be wrong. we have our fingers in pretty deep, it might be impossible to pull them out. but still...

Great post daratheresa.
This is an interesting article talking about the price of natural gas. Evidently, Mubarak was selling gas to israel FAR below the cost of producing it. Egypt is borrowing a lot of money to subsidize the cost of food to the poor. Giving gas to israel and letting people starve is NOT a good idea in an Arab country.

No shit! look at our own country after 8 years of W!

To turn isolationist would be a Huge mistake! But, to let our corporations direct the governments focus is an even Huger Mistake!

Watching Egyptian citizens, take it upon themselves to, protect their neighborhoods and the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, is inspiring!

I'm glad to see the Obama administration bowing to the will of the Egyptian public! Unlike others who are more worried about our Alliance/agreements. This may be the first real test, of sensitivity, the U.S. has had in a while.

‘Anonymous’ calls for attacks on Egyptian government websites"

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/01/anon ... -websites/

By David Edwards
Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 -- 10:42 am

The online group of hactivists known as "Anonymous" expressed their support for protesters in Egypt Wednesday by calling for cyber attacks on websites run by the Egyptian government.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across Egypt this week, facing down a massive police presence to demand the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak in protests inspired by Tunisia's popular uprising.

After reports said that social media websites Twitter and Facebook had been restricted in the country, the "Anonymous" Facebook page "Operation Egypt" issued a dire warning to the Egyptian government.

"To the Egyptian Govt : Anonymous challenges all those who are involved in censorship," the group wrote. "Anonymous wants you to offer free access to uncensored media in your entire country. When you ignore this message, not only will we attack your govt websites, we will also make sure that the international media see the horrid reality you impose on your people!"

A graphic on the Facebook page gave instructions for participating in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

Israel getting directly involved would cause all hell to break lose in not only Egypt, but the entire region. And, most of the anger would be directed at Israel, which wouldn't bode well for them. They are the minority in the region, and not well liked there as it is.

Just doesn't seem a likely scenario to me.

Some people seem to be worrying more about the internet or long-dead mummies than the welfare of the Egyptian people.

On teh other hand, a society of people in the desert preparing to destroy the icon that they have revered over many years - it's Burning Man!

CSS, I deny any and all allegations! :)

Well it seems not the common persons on the street, but supporters of the current regime have taken the violence to a new level. Virtually all live reporting has been cut off at the knees and numerous journalists have been injured to the point of hospitalization.

The spin will probably be the need to "crack down on the protesters" when the truth is a contrived effort by Mubarak's thugs to justify crushing control implementation.
