I don't, and I don't think anyone else should either. I want them to use the stuff in the crate, and return it when they leave. If necessary, Ill keep the soul of their first born as a deposit.

I may have missed the tarp thing, but its part of the crate...with stakes and rope. Can't provide poles, but you might be able to pursueade other burners to act as poles, and feed em beer.....or just tie it off your vehicle.

Let me just interject right here: Barbie Death Village was "home" to the International Burner Hostel their last year, 2008. They were wonderful people and exciting campmates. However, when they left their entire area was trashed (got a huge red spot on the MOOP Map afterwards) and though it isn't a permanent stain on our otherwise stellar reputation, it gives me concern that many, if not most, of the people there are more interested in the parties than being good stewards of the playa. Would we invite them back? Probably, but on a much shorter leash. I appreciate international travelers, which is why Barbie Death Village is home to so many, but the Hostel (or whatever it's reincarnation may be) needs to have the capacity of policing its inhabitants or otherwise they may well sow the seeds of their own distruction.

Im not suprised...and Im not doing a hostel...nor am I bringing truck loads of gear for people NOT in my camp. Perhaps this is a smaller, cleaner way to a foriegn problem? Do you know Paula? Rose lady?

I borrowed a bike from Elliot two years in a row now, and it is an awesome playa gift.

Thanks again Elliot.
TS, what about trying to collect these items mentioned above for refurbishing the kits? It seems a crying shame this gear goes to waste!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I may have assorted useful items, I can bring them to the playa and if they aren't needed, I can leave space in my truck and take them back with me.
I won't know what I'll have until we get closer.
Btw, often yard sales here are free on Sundays!
Usually many useful items & free, especially if BM is mentioned. :)
Edit to clarify post
I'm the MAN in a truck, burner who is stuck, you're in luck! I'll whip out my BIG tow chain and not charge you, not even one lousy buck!
As long as they're put back in the bag...I guess I could take them...But then, Im not posting as a public trash bin. If they want to discard of several pieces of gear, that should be ok. And, if they have it in a plastic crate, all the better. I don't want to be the only one though! I was hoping other mainland burners, with extra space might help out....on a one on one arrangement. Were still a ways away from BM, and even if they don't show, it would make a splendid gift for some poor burner...as long as they take it back.
Some people think the problem of traveling with a 50 pound limit is just funny.
The guy I promised my extra gear to in 2009 thought it was hilarious when it was gone, and he was at the burn with no tent or sleeping bag.
This is for over seas burners only. 50 lbs...or camping gear may cause a delay in OUR customs..I like seeing more and more countries represented at Burning Man. Id like to see some Egyptians and possibly Lybians this year! Did my Iraqi quota..
Don't know if it's true anymore, but the llc told me a few years ago that there were more foreign burners than from the east side of the usa.
It's not from lack of interest.
Of course, no junk/trash TS.
I'll have a better idea of my haul away capacity when the festival is closer.
I'll also have a better idea of storage space under my ski shack of a house. LOL
Locals can help a lot, haul/store etc, if circumstances are right.
Maybe call it: 'gear over here for those who aren't near' heheheh
tom servo dont talk yourself out of this its a really great idea. I can manage without so much so called essentials when i go camping, but manage is the operational word there, having someone help out with the basics means to me for one i can bring moe cool stuff and have a better time and having someone to give it back too, means i feel good that next year someone else will benefit.
just saying
Absolutly a great idea and I hope it all works out.
But for me it is also a bit of a challenge (as a BM virgin) to get to BM on my own (from NL) with all the stuff I require (tent, sl bags, etc), buy food and water locally and get to BRC on my own. Then perhaps hook up to a camp.
Just my self reliance kick, I guess ;-)
But again: great job TomServo!
I figure 10x10 is a managable size...and either blue or silver...I learned my lesson from green tarps.
And 1 tarp. just the basics.
This is an awesome idea and I know it will take a huge load, LITERALLY, off the backs of migratory burners. Thanks Tom for picking up the slack and may good blessings be yours!
figjam i know. its just when you have a choice between somewhere to live and a week in the desert in 5 months time its difficult to justify spending your rent on airfare.
i mean i have justified it. soon as i get laid off i'm buying my plane ticket but i'm not looking forward to being homeless with any real enthusiasm ive done it before and its no fun
How about some of the International burners who'll buy there own stuff to camp at the burn, donate what they buy to Tom and then they'll have it for next year, or some other burner from far away lands be the recipients, instead of just throwing it away.
Whaddaya think?
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.
