dont try me Gyre, i know the back story.
Never took you for gullible.
Good thing I have Gyre on plonk these days, huh? The other mods watch him, not me.Simon of the Playa wrote:gyre wrote:Eplaya is now well on it's way to becoming a place where AntiM will be an appropriate moderator.
It's up to the people using it and the llc, to decide if that's what they want.
It may be a very interesting case study to watch the forum deteriorate.
There are already plenty of teen gamer and camaro forums that fill the bill though.

I can't believe anyone is fooled by your vague lies and refusal to back up anything.
I've watched many people on here attacked the same way by others.
How big a moron do you have to be, to not question the motivation of such vitriol?
Actually, AntiM, refusing to be chased off eplaya by your lies and calling you for lying, isn't really badmouthing you.
I am reminding people that you have exposed what you are.
There is plenty I could say about you, but saying that you are the kind of person that would do this, is bad enough, isn't it?
If everything you said about me was true, it wouldn't make you any less deliberately vicious.
I treated you as a friend.
I don't think you have friends.

thats probably why people think i'm such an asshole, but honey badger don't give a flying fuck.
the truth is subjective, and hence subject to change and interpretation, it's all a matter of POV.
from My POV, i see incessant whining and accusations about an supposed incident of mis-communication and poor logistics.
my suggestion, drop it, let it go, the petty suit does not fit well and is totally gauche, so why wear it?
Totally agree with both of you!Elorrum wrote:Wonderful reasoning here. It isn't just a rave where everything is free. The snark is a good alert to those who have misconceptions about where they are going. I stay away from most of the opinion threads to avoid getting abraded by what I choose as a way to spend my free time. I guess as a consequence, I don't see this supposed breakdown in the community, and on the contrary have observed this year some of the new folks being great additions to the information/help bank. +1 to My Dear Friend.MyDearFriend wrote: Dr. Helix, I respectfully but utterly disagree with you; I found a very warm and coherent welcome here immediately. The noobs who are chased away are those who demonstrate a lazy dependency and a refusal to be taught. For their own safety I hope they never reach The Playa. I find you all to be wonderfully conscientious guardians, like it or not.
This shit is real, noobs. And it's better to be bitch-slapped on ePlaya than cold-cocked on The Playa. Mother Nature has no sympathy for you.

I'm relatively new here and find the snark refreshing and entertaining, but then I've been on quite a few forums that aren't intended for "nurturing" new members. Sometimes it degraded to the state you've mentioned, with cliques and stuff like that. The core problem some of those forums was that some of the people "in the club" were also moderators; so "dissent" would be quickly quashed.Dr Helix wrote:I'd say that the biggest challenge facing this forum is what I've seen in other forums like this; that the core group ends up chasing away any new contributors and that it becomes a closed in chat space. I'm a part time contributor and feel okay adding my comments, but it took a lot of time to get to this point. A lot of folks get shot down pretty quickly and leave after just a few posts. Hell, I've been guilty myself of some of the snark that drove them away. Is this right? Not sure. Just hope it doesn't go away as it has been a great source of inspiration, information and entertainment for me. Thanks everyone.
I think the moderation on this forum does a lot for preventing the breakdown of the forum into a "club" for only certain people. Hopefully it remains that way.

I truly do heart you, Dr Helix, and I am trying to understand. I have read back over this thread again twice and still don't see what you are getting at. But my default setting is to care about everybody, I am just bent that way, so, please tell me, is there somebody you are particularly concerned about? I would be happy to help, if I can; being a noob myself, I really appreciate all the help I have been given and feel obliged to pay that forward.Dr Helix wrote: Read the last 25 posts. Very insightful and well said.theCryptofishist wrote:Hm.
1--Part of the problem might be a difference of mode. The people who hang out here regularly regard this as a "home." People in search of information think that we are here to give information. So, people come into home and start treating us like the help and our hackles go up.
2--Any group (at least when it gets past Dunbar's Number) has a wall around it--people have to prove their worth. What happens here is better than lieing naked in a coffin talking about your sexual experiences. (Although, I suppose belong to Skull and Bones does lead to greater opportunity to come into power.) The actual thing, that you don't notice is that a lot of newbs just have to show a little respect and a little initiative and after three posts it's all hail, fellow, well met. I agree that no one coming to the board cold can know this, but it's still true.
3--Snark is one of the games we play to keep us entertained; this means that we will be here when questions are asked. Otherwise we'd be at other boards and this place would be neophytes exchanging rumors.
4--I think that the "Welcome Wagon" in the greeters sub-forum is a positive development. Ironically, that was basically started by jkisha.
5--Dr. Helix, to whatever extent you want to, you can not only give greenhorns pertinent advice, but you can also tell the rest of us that we're going to far. I'm sure you can think of gentle ways of reminding us. You can't control our behavior, but even a single person who's in your corner can turn the experience of the board around.
6--(Actually a variant of 2) This can be quite a generous community, therefore we want to keep leeches out. (Generosity to leeches is not a pretty thing.) Yes, this translates to hurtful at times. On playa, most of these people would give you the shirt off their backs.
7--If you think we are all really nasty uncaring, go to the "General Discussion" sub-forum and read three pages of the "Fuck" thread.
Thank you friend. It's not the individuals I was concerned about. It was just that it felt that a thread had been overtaken by core people embroiled in some controversey known only to them. This would seem to be the place where PMing would be a good alternative. And I've seen this in other threads too. Just hope that kind of thing doesn't overshadow the good that this forum provides. I'm a huge advocate of this place and want to continue to feel that way.MyDearFriend wrote:I truly do heart you, Dr Helix, and I am trying to understand. I don't really feel qualified to help our veteran burners, sadly; maybe someday I will. And, I'd rather not get mixed up with folks who aggressively air old grievances or invent new ones; life is too short for that, isn't it? And it's a fool's game anyway...![]()
The best advice I can give to a noob is to do what I did, since IT FUCKING WORKED: Start on the main page. Go through the First Timers Guide and make notes. Address the Required Reading in a systematic fashion. Then, register to ePlaya, introduce yourself, participate sincerely, and scroll back at least 3 pages before starting a new thread, because, chances are very good that your topic has already been exhaustively discussed. Please do not ask these fine people to reinvent the wheel for you!!! And if you screw up/step on toes/feel misunderstood: simply apologize and move on.
Geez it is not rocket science...

you can be such a tool at times.gyre wrote:It's worth remembering that many people coming on here, have been burners for a long time.
It should be a concern that so many lurk and don't post.
I hear from many people that leave this forum.
The reason is always unpleasantness.
Not everyone is able to come across as they wish to, and text is difficult at best anyway.
You might be surprized at the name that is mentioned the most, as reason for leaving.
(It's not AntiM either, not even close, though she has been mentioned by more than one person.)
