Hi Frostyfire!
Welcome to the board. :) Was Metropolis your first burn?

. . . You probably already know this, but Nevada's laws differ from Oregon's (and other places with more relaxed grow laws) so make sure you don't endanger yourself on your way to the event, or inside it. The license you're covered by will not be helpful to you in NV, is all.

Hello everyone!

Virgin burner here from Saskatchewan, Canada. I'm a dance instructor (bellydance and burlesque) and I love crafting, gardening and home-brewing. I'm driving down with a group of 8 friends and six of us are first-timers. I've been reading the ePlaya threads obsessively, MOOP has become a regular word in my vocabulary, and my house is strewn with camping equipment, LEDs and tulle. I haven't planned specific gift items to bring, as I don't know what's best received... but I plan to spend several hours picking up MOOP, bringing extra necessities (toilet paper, lip balm etc) so I can give them to people that need them, lending a hand where I can, and being as prepared as possible myself.

Can't wait to get out there and hopefully I will meet some of you!

Welcome to eplaya everybody. You all need to post your own introduction thread in the "Introduce Yourself" forum too.

Hello, my name is Comrade Bunny. I will be a virgin burner in 2012 or 2013. I really hope I can afford to go next year. My sister and assorted family have been home twice. In 2013, my sister will be getting married there and I'm helping plan a camp (or two) as well as the wedding. I'm also working on a slew of outfits.

I am an English/theater/speech teacher by trade, but I am currently unemployed due to health issues. In fact, I've been declared disabled by Minnesota and I've applied for Social Security Disability. I'm on a ton of meds. So, if I ever have errors in my posts, they are usually med related (or my glitchy computer).

I taught in Minnesota, my home state, for three and a half years and in North Dakota for seven years. When I was in North Dakota, I lived and taught on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. I was lucky enough to be included in many Lakota/Dakota ceremonies and Wacipis (Pow Wows).

I am a horror movie buff. I particularly like zombies. I'm a avid reader. I also enjoy paper crafts, sewing, needlework, The Sims 3, and drawing with pen and ink. I've just started learning how to play the bongos.

I'm looking forward to meeting here and on the playa.

Hi Comrade Bunny! Welcome to the board. :) It's a great time to join if 2012 will be your first.

Looks like we share a number of interests--theatre, costuming, MST3K and Sims 3 (why couldn't they give us a Strangeville this time out? It could replicate the Burn).

Looks like you've found the right thread in the Q&A forum, so I don't think you'll be needing any help from me. :)

My name is lilsherbear and I am a first time burner. I was to come about two years ago... but, I lost my hubby in a car accident. I am scared to be here by myself, but, am told there are many friendly burners. I worked for one of the largest banks, left after the loss, moved from one side of the US of A to the other. Learning to start all over again in life, love and new friends. I love horseback riding, fishing, swimming, art. I love to write and won a writers contest to Chicago. Was awesome. I have been in a couple of movies, as an extra. Was on the Doctor Phil show... I am looking and hoping a camp will find room for me and yes my fiance. I found a new love. Please if anyone here at BM is looking to add new faces, new meaning to your this years camp please message me - I am hoping to share our first time with those who were new once to but have room in there heart and camp to add two people. Do I sound desperate I think I feel it, its getting so close. Would truly love to share a camp with you.
Thanks,

Welcome to ePlaya lilsherbear! Our dusty little town doesn't have much in the way of horseback riding or fishing, but it makes up for it in art! Of course, I think there's going to be a 2-story Charlie The Unicorn art car that you can ride, that's almost like horseback riding :D

New to the scene and the Playa but am looking forward to seeing such gross, awesome, oooey, expression in mass!! After working for a nonprofit for six years, I've just returned from an epic 7 month backpacking trip to various corners of mothership earth. Dodged Somalia pirates during a sailing passage across the India Ocean http://walkinbootsbliss.blogspot.com/20 ... rates.html .... experienced the stronghold of adrenaline after a motorbike gauged and inch and a half into my leg in northern Laos, and met some of the most amazing fantastic friends EVER... in all the land! Glad to be safe in Seattle and now am working for a vendor at Pike Place in Seattle. Ive arranged much of my life and plans the past few months around coming to BM this year and can't wait! Cheers :D

Hi Lilsherbear!

Many, many people go alone or with one other person--you don't need a theme camp. You'll have neighbors right away, and can visit theme camps all you want. However, if you and your fiancé lack for camping skills you may want to rehearse setting up and staking down your tent (9 or 10 inch stakes are recommended) and shade structure (with rebar).

Here's a link to the 2011 Theme Camps forum:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewforum.php?f=188

There's a thread at the top about how to join a theme camp. Typically they want a nice email or detailed private message about what you have to offer, and why you fit in with their philosophy. They will also generally expect either a fee for the amenities they provide, or for you to work a few hours a day, or both. So pick a theme camp that sounds fun or interesting so that it doesn't feel like work. Or don't, and be free to enjoy the city with your fiancé without responsibility to anyone else.

If you want a camp, seek one now--most theme camps closed their doors in June, but a few others are still filling spaces.

Hello! I'm Val and a virgin.

I won't be attending this year but I am making plans for 2012. I have been lucky to already experience gifting from new friends, in various ways.. I had someone offer me a ticket, which, I KNOW. I KNOW. I'm insane for not taking it. But I am SO not prepared, I would end up being a total leech to my neighbors, not to mention I'd have to leave the hubby at home and that didn't seem very fair.

anyway, I'm anxiously preparing and listening to everyone on ePlaya and Reddit and my friends who are going this year get REALLY excited and I am SO pumped for them. The people that I have met in the community even just online has been such a gift, and I can't wait to be there to meet EVERYONE.

Hi Terry! Hi Jason! Hi Val!

Val, I don't think you're crazy at all for knowing it's just too short a period of time for you (personally) to get ready. One of the great tricks to enjoying such a challenging environment is self-knowledge--knowing what you need to be happy, knowing how you operate, and the conditions under which you thrive. Declining the ticket not only saved you from a possibly bad or uncomfortable burn (and who knows if you would've tried again?), but also probably made that ticket available to someone who WAS ready, and who will be ecstatic to go. And that was very kind.

See you in 2012!

Hi everybody, and Val, what Savannah said is absolutely on the money. I wouldn't call you crazy for passing it up, I'd say you're smart enough to know when the timing might not be right. This site has some great resources not only to get ready for the trip, but craftiness and DIY in general, hopefully you and your husband can make use of. You can also connect with the Kansas regional group, they do a few fun things throughout the year.

Hello, I am Yesenia or Yesi for short and I am from Santa Cruz California. I'm graduating UCSC soon and this is going to be my first time going to burning man. I study cultural anthropology, love arts and crafts, have a thing for cycling, sing, dance, and I work as a nanny. I'm super excited to go to burning man this year even though I am going alone. I had originally made plans to go with my friend but at the last minute she lost her ticket and nothing could be done. I was thinking about selling mine but I couldn't. I've been looking forward to this all year and I really need a vacation and this is it. I've never really gone anywhere alone but I'm very hopeful that I will find friends and people to help me along the way. I got all my gear and I'm ready to go!

Hi Yesi!

I bet you'll be fine. If you really want companionship, write a descriptive email offering your skills and compatible qualities to the camps still recruiting in the 2011 Theme Camps forum, but really . . . . going alone can be a lot of fun. No obligations except to yourself. You will have neighbors immediately anyway. Offer beverages if someone helps you. :)

As a nanny and a multi-faceted person, I bet you will be flexible and adaptable out there. That'll help a LOT.

That gave me pause as well, but now I'm wondering if she means she couldn't bear to sell it. :)

Yesi, if you answer that question here it will keep people from bombarding you with private messages begging you to sell.

I just moved to the high desert recently and am getting used to the dry environment. I do a lot of web surfing looking for cargo container architecture ideas and sites with info on geodesic dome building. When I started to see Burning Man links I checked those out too. Have always liked the concept and plan to attend someday. I thought it might be this year but saw it was sold out and I'd need more time anyway to prepare.

Hope to make it for 2012 and figure the earlier I get in the loop the better. Warm regards to all for this year's event and am looking forward to to taking part in the future.

Hi gb!

Go to the main Burning Man website, click on "Regionals" in the small print at the top and then on the map, clicking until you have narrowed in on your geographical area, and join the email mailing lists.

You sound like real party animals. Try and get yourselves across the playa for the ePlaya Meet & Greet Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. at Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro, right on the corner of 3:30 and Engagement. And bring a bag of ice. And a bottle of absinthe. And leave your inhibitions behind.
