Because stupid people are everywhere and come in all shapes, sizes, genders and colors. You just notice them more because stupid people out number smart people in this world.

That is a fact and just the way it is.

(even though there are quite a large number of smart people at Burningman, it only seems like a lot of stupid people because it's rare to find a stupid person at burningman and when you run into one, it really does seem like a lot.)

And as far I can tell Burner types are not. You kids are in your prime breeding years and as far as I can see the fertility rate is negative. People on other threads have discussed why BM is so white, which I feel is an interesting question from the angle of "why does any given activity or event attract people from any given community (which might or might not correlate to external attributes such as skin color) and not to others?" but I think that if that horse isn't dead yet, it's not kicking very hard either, and needs no further beating.

As far as "why stupid people" I think the answer is, "because BM welcomes risk taking". My first take was, stupidity is more obvious than smartness because smartness knows when to shut up and watch, and stupid is always right out there in your face. But then I realized that BM is a place for people to make judgments that they might not make in the real world, to try taking their Inner Stupid Child out to play. "Hey, if I can wear anything I want, maybe I should go naked? Maybe I should paint myself blue? Maybe I should start asking random women to touch my genitals?"

More freedom = more freedom to be stupid. The normal ones learn from their stupidity. The smart ones learn from the stupidity of others.
