(((Tootsybean))) ouch!

Congratulations on not being held hostage by your stuff. 8) Wonderful though it is, representing all that time energy creativity & cash :( it is not as important as getting there!

I keep remembering, while I am packing, something someone said here on this board (wish I could remember who):
There's too much stuff out there already.

That's why we have chosen to leave the crystal chandelier at home, yet again.

Seriously, we have a crystal chandelier which is earmarked for playa use.

truck scales for mini van?
If you think you've overdone it, double it.

I thought the same thing. Since when did they start requiring mini vans to go through truck scales??? I reaaaaaally don't think there's a limit to how much you can pack in one. Anyone have any documentation/links otherwise?

They're not supposed to go through the Port of Entry, only commercial vehicles and ones with livestock, and in some states private trucks over 10K GVW. If it is posted "NO Pick ups", I believe you can get a ticket. If it is NOT required, and you do go in anyway, and you're overweight, then you're liable for the overweight ticket.

250 pounds over on a minivan won't kill it. If it handles ok and your tires and shocks are good, you'll be alright. If it handles like a sick seacow, then yes, lighten it. You can always invest in better tires, or a hitch and a small trailer.

Our van can haul 1200lbs including passengers (check sticker on driver door)- Truck scales at our recycling center - No we do not stop interstate weight checks. weigh empty, then full- gasp! we we at about 1500- now after some hard choices we are legal! see you all soon!!

LOL, MyLarry, the professional truck driver, always avoided scaling our SUV and trailer. I think he knew it was over, and didn't want to "know". The Trailblazer has new tires, very heavy duty, and the new trailer has electric brakes. Spendy, but worth it.

Ahh I see what you're saying. Not a highway/state legality issue, but abiding by your van manufacturers recommended weight limit.

I hate to even suggest it, but remember that word.. recommended. I don't think a couple of bikes are going to hurt.. and you'll sorely miss them out there. I would toss them back in.

Rememeber.. safety third!

YMMV

Less than 48 hours to go. Coloring my hair this morning, packing later today. Considering the pros and cons of sitting down for breakfast on Sunday in Reno. I'd rather get there early so we can set up before the heat of the day, but a full tummy helps that along. Maybe just donuts and coffee. Fried doughy goodness covered in chocolate and sugar with a rich cup of caffeine. YES!

Ouch, that sucks, but driving an over weight vehicle makes the cross country trip less enjoyable and more dangerous. I would bring the bikes though - manufacturer's weight limits are probably a bit conservative and what could they weigh - 40 pounds?

We also have had to scale down our plans repeatedly. At this point it looks like just the basics for survival will be coming with us this year. No room for our camp art piece even - although if at all possible I will make a flag before we leave.

We do a test pack of the car this weekend.

Do mini-vans even have to go over the scales? Our 20' box truck never has to get weighed.

She was referring to the manufacturers recommended weight. I had to do a double take too..

Technically...I am not camping there. My man Piney and I will have a tent there (it's his camp, he's been with Golden Cafe for a LONG ass time) but I'll be there a lot. I'll be at 5:40 and D in the Black Hole. Headed there at 3am tomorrow morning. Hitting the bay area on the way to grab someone. Then straight on 'til it's dusty.

:D :D

DEF come say hi, we'll give you a drink at the Golden Cafe, and I'll try and swing by Snowflake Village!
Finally moving to SF...can't WAIT!

TODAY!

I died my hair black. Step one of a two part process, dreads are going in this afternoon!

Here's the new dye job:
Image

Here is a reminder of what the dreads looks like (got it way back in December or something):
Image

Once that's accomplished, back to Santa Monica to pack the car and spend a little time with my man who's not coming up 'til Thursday. Then asleep for as long as I can and up and out by 3am.

@Clarity, I'll see you really soon! Are you camping in the Hole?

Checking out the equipment, was surprised to find the generator wasn't working! So, extra trip to the lawn mower repair shop. Fortunately, it will be a one day repair and we pick it up tomorrow. We pick up the rental truck on Wednesday morning; but I think we'll have all the equipment checked, supplies packed and ready for loading by Sunday. So we'll have two days to relax before we leave. That will be a first! So knock on wood.

I called AAA and upgraded from basic to Plus coverage. Unfortunately both primary and associates on the same account have to upgrade but they will refund any upgrade fee with a written request to switch back to basic (they can expect mail the week of Sept 12).

I washed, waxed and Armour-Alled the vehicle in an earnest, yet misguided, attempt to minimize post-playa clean-up and to provide a nice clean, shiny landing zone for whatever insects hover between me and BRC east of the Mississippi. I didn't even remotely consider vacuuming.

Replaced NY area maps with Nevada/Utah maps (I'm going to take a less than direct route home this time), removed cargo shield, headrests and assorted stuff. Loaded the pocket in the drivers side door with energy drinks.

I cut Refectix to fit the windows.

I updated the maps on the GPS.

I did all my usual first of the month PC maintenance a little early.

I sat in the sun and skimmed the Survival Guide until I nodded.

the UPS dude delivered some playa goodies and fortunately I wasn't here or I would've been dancing with him all over the front yard.
I am expecting 2 more shipments so maybe I'll get my chance soon enough. He's pretty hot.

Where do you pick up antlers?

Oh well.

Picked up van. It's (probably) not going to scrape going over the speed bumps. And I know where to put the air! It's only one thing, but a very crucial thing.
Oh yeah, picked up proof of insurance.

Picked up some huge mill ends for fuel for the camp warming stove and packed them in the box truck. Bought another spare tire for the golf cart as I got a flat off roading it 2 days ago and changed the tire. It is amazing how rough terrain capable a stock 1989 club car gasser is.

O, also ordered a waterproof camera today. Cheap enough I won't die if I lose it; decent enough to take some decent pics.

At the point now where I gotta order stuff for delivery to a broker in washington for pickup on my way down. Man I hope I get to the brokerage during business hours!!
