Define "COSTUME"
Define "COSTUME"
I have noticed that Decompression events are charging more for entrance without a "Costume".
What is the definition of costume?
Would an artist who decides to go dressed as a Lawyer catch shit? Would a person, such as myself, who decides to wear my favorite wide pipe brown courdoroys with a very loud Hawaian shirt be in costume? Would I be displaying a "non-burner" attitude?
Maybe this warrants discussion?
A "non-burner" surcharge seems kind of shitty to me.

I totally agree..........WFT is with "costume surcharge"?
who makes rules for TTITD? Everyone is welcome there.
And, who's to judge, what another thinks is "costume"?
foog that, IMHO!!!!

Re: Define "COSTUME"
I think they do that to make it seem more like a burner event - after all if everyone wore their regular street clothes it would seem more like just a trip to your local bar.
Not saying I agree with it, just the rationale behind it. They could probably figure out a better way to encourage costumes.

Re: Define "COSTUME"
so, someone is not a "Burner" or "burny enough" if they don't wear a costume?
seems, those who want to, will, those who don't, shouldn't be penalized.
and, yeah, without the "surcharge" it may look like a "night at the bar"
and, with a surcharge, why not just call it a "costume party" since, with that requirement, you've changed it from "all inclusive" to a "costume party".
also, in a way, your setting people not in costume up, for segregation of sorts.
I've seen plenty of folks, in nice costumes, who are "not Burners"....but wear the stuff.

Re: Define "COSTUME"
I wonder about costumes too. Is it only a "costume" if it is named?
"Oh, I'm a NURSE!"
"Oh, I'm a CAT!"
"Oh uh, I'm a DIRTY HIPPIE!"
What? Move along hippie. And put down that burger! You can't enter. That ain't no costume.
This year I brought my old "costume": a lab coat, but added a decorated conical hat. I also brought some other "costume" which comprised of a robe and a fez. But really, these weren't coherent "costumes." Just some "weird things" to wear. Better than just hoodies and jeans I guess?
The guys who organize my regional are a bunch of Juggalos (nice Juggalos, not the asshole violent ones). Are they dressed up?

I just found the inspirational post that prompted this thread, and think it's interesting that the author (who I actually know well) included the extra "$5 surcharge for (non-burner wear/attitude) "MOOP_Czar wrote: A "non-burner" surcharge seems kind of shitty to me.

Re: Define "COSTUME"
I agree. I do know with our regional, being Utah with the odd laws, that we're a private party, and hence NOT open to the general public. You have to give names to go on the entry list when purchasing tickets. A pain, but it has to be that way or we can't have booze. There's been a lot of complaints from last year, UT Decom was held in a commercial venue and they HAD to provide the security, it was publicized, and was pretty much a dance party with a cash bar. We didn't go. So the costume thing is more a yes than a no here.ygmir wrote:so, someone is not a "Burner" or "burny enough" if they don't wear a costume?

I wore my blue footed booby t-shirt and my jk laminate with a bunch of swag attached. The person who took my $$ stood on tiptoes to check if I was in costume. But I always wonder if it's not just the chair. Although, now that I think of it, wouldn't the playa on my chair qualify me?

Re: Define "COSTUME"
I wear a suit and tie every day to work.
I feel like I work in costume.
My wife has a seperate area in the closet full of nothing but what she calls "dress-up clothes".
She is a fine art photographer and she love to get dressed to the 9's when we go out - especially to an opening.
Is she in costume?
If a burner who is a member of the Fire Dept comes by after work - are they in costume?
It just seems so arbitrary.
I won't even get into the concept of the "Attitude" because that smack entirely of "Burnier than thou".

Re: Define "COSTUME"
how inneresting..
What I wear ( and many others ) at TTITD would likely be considered 'costumes' by 90% of the population. To me and that remaining 10% of the population; they are OUTFITS; i.e. a set of clothes (or not); leather, silver boots, skirts, armor, etc. that is an expression of self.
NOT wearing a costume that represents someones mass produced idea of a costume that folks can buy at a holloween costume store for $25 - $50
based on the earlier concepts of COSTUME requirements, these events become something they were not intended to be.

(And yes, we now know that I'll sign in for usage.)
The typical idiom is "to game the system", which is sort of to rig it, but it's done by the person processed by the system, not the person setting up the system.
And Bob's been uncharicaristically kind and open lately. I suppose he's going back to "Regular Bob" mode.

Yup. My night-time playa clothes are what I wear out here in the city. My daytime clothes are a little more relaxed than I wear here, but not by much (I don't wear the clown pants as much to go get food, but they get worn around the house & with company)EspressoDude wrote:To me and that remaining 10% of the population; they are OUTFITS; i.e. a set of clothes (or not); leather, silver boots, skirts, armor, etc. that is an expression of self.
I *hate* the costume rule. Always have, always will. So I never pay the higher price, regardless of what I'm wearing. Being argumentative can be fun.

Re: Define "COSTUME"
I think they're defining costume as not street attire, and simply trying to offer an incentive to be creative. They've been offering discounts for playa-wear for years (offered in SF & LA in 2004 when I first started participating), if calling it costumes is new it's probably because the default world audience doesn't understand words like playa-wear or playa attire. It's all just kind of clothes to me now, I don't keep things separated into separate groups anymore.

The MV builder/gearheads I know wouldn't be caught dead in anything but jeans and a sweat shirt, w/maybe a touch of playa wear/attire.
