Secondary Virginity

Post by flightless » Fri Dec 02, 2011 6:43 am

hi, i'm Flightless (aka Dodo)... I went to Burningman in 2007 with 4 other ignorant virgins and we had a partially fantastic, partially cataclysmic experience. Now that our hands have healed, a few of us are planning to try it again in 2012. I'm tentatively planning to drive from D.C. again, and trying to figure out the still-super-daunting logistics of greywater, etc., and how I can be less of an idiot about food and hydration this time around... Words of encouragement are hereby solicited!

hugs,
Flightless

My advise, dont go, 4 years for your hands to heal is way to long and now that your older things take longer to heal.

But if still want go: I take 5 gallon plastic bottles and fill them up closer to the site. when i set up camp i fill my camping shower bag with the water for one and that empty bottle becomes my grey water bottle and just haul it out.

There is alot of grey water and a bunch of food threads on this site check them out,,

Oh, totally joking about my hands finally healing (though they really did hurt for a couple weeks after I got home). We did try rinsing in water with a little vinegar, but I will be way more vigilant this time around -- and perhaps even wear work gloves for setup and tear-down!

Welcome to ePlaya! In addition to the great resources and people on the site, definitely also check into your regional group, there are plenty of DC burners out there. Not only does it help to have like minded people in your local area to share the excitement, they can be extremely helpful in planning out the logistics. I think they also organize a shipping container and/or a freight truck, which might help make it easier for you and your campmates to get everything there and back again.

Cheers!

Welcome!!!!

I attended in 2008 & 2009, but have taken a hiatus the last couple of years to do family vacations with the kids. But this year is on!

Like most of us here, I also fantasize, dream, obsess about my return and I want to make this year better than ever. Take the advice on this forum seriously and learn from your past experiences and you will be fine.

As a burn virgin I had a hard time keeping in tune with my body due to all the stimuli. (That's a fancy way of saying: "I got fucked up and forgot to really take care of myself") Your second time around it will be easier. It also helps to have an experienced friend to hang with so you can keep an eye on each other.

Pay attention to what your body tells you on the playa, do your best to eat well and at regular intervals, drink water before you get thirsty, and have fun!

Welcome to eplaya.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Hi Flightless! Like your nickname.

Here's the Burning Man website's grey water disposal page:
http://www.burningman.com/environment/r ... water.html

The pond recipe they have in there works for a small number of people (2 to 4) if they're showering in maybe 2 gallons each, every other day. It helps to have a broom to spread the grey water on the plastic. There's more info here on ePlaya and on google, naturally. Some folks have very complicated systems and/or collect & haul all of their grey water out instead of evaporating it.

I protect my hands out there by packing the work gloves right next to the sledgehammer and breaking out the gloves for all work (even if it's just "for a second", because the second always turns into an hour), using baby wipes and lemon juice to clean the extremities at least once daily, lotioning up frequently (1-2 travel size for the knapsack; another bottle for the tent) & packing 2 little bottles of liquid bandage for the hangnails . . . one for the mini first aid in the Knapsack of Roaming, & one for the stationary first aid kit.

It's also handy to have nail clippers and an emery board, because--as you may have found--your nails will find creative ways to break.

Hey Flightless!
Welcome to eplaya!
Does your user name have anything to do with why you choose to drive from DC?

As I'm sure you are aware, make sure you get in line registered for the lottery in January.

May I ask what the cataclysmic event was for your camp in 2007?

no, not afraid of planes; Flightless is short for Dodo :-)

One of our tiny cadre in 2007 was not looking where she was bicycling and severely injured her knee. I had to drive to Reno to meet her at the hospital (and the poor ambulance driver had to get out of BRC in a dust storm) and we missed a big chunk of the festival. She ended up having to fly home b/c of the knee, and I drove her car back solo.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that! I hope she heeled up ok.
Must have been one rough drive! How long of a drive would that be?

Good point, who knows what sorta damage I could do with a nail file. End up ruining all the pretty painted nails of the sparkle ponies, it would be disastrous.

But the next time I'm behind bars, I'll remember not to call you for a *get out of jail* cake.

I'm working on an attorney who is a tart, but Simon's got first dibs.

I knew you had my back!
And that would probably be more useful than an emery board anyway. Shoot, you can't even make a shiv out of an emery board.

For some reason when you said a tart with an attorney in it, I instantly thought of some guy in a suite, wearing a "queen of hearts" costume over the suite.
