BOYCOTT THE BURN
BOYCOTT THE BURN:
Whether you think that the Borg is evil, inept, or a well-meaning bunch of scatter brained artists, the ticket situation is a disaster. Asking them to fix the situation is going to accomplish nothing. Remember, this is the fix they put in to address the sell-out.
What we need is a Burner based do-ocracy solution, and I humbly suggest this:
Don't go. Don't buy tickets from scalpers, don't buy tickets from the Bmorg pool, don't volunteer at the gate, just don't go. Decrease the demand, tank the ticket price, prank the scalpers.
Buying face value tickets won’t do it. You’re still decreasing supply. You need to abstain. Boycott. Don’t participate in the Bmorg sponsored re-distribution scheme.
If you do have tickets, sell them. But not to other burners. Contact the stub-hub, ebay and craigslist scalpers. Tell them you have face value tix to sell, and put them into their hands.
The only way to stop scalping of burning man tickets is to destroy the financial incentives that will always exist as long as demand exceeds supply. If we, as a community, can rally and show the profiteers that Bman tickets are too risky, they’ll stop. It’s up to you, you’re a burner, you make burning man what it is, and by refusing to go this year, you will make it better.

has any... any year getting to Burning Man been easy? If it were easy we would not appreciate it as much. The journey there is part of the experience and part of it is adversity. Someone reminded me of that last night on one of the lists...

You know, no. It's not that difficult. Sure, it can be a lot of work, but seriously, it's mostly fun, even the drive out there. And it's a DRIVE, we're not exactly stagecoaching it on the Oregon Trail. There's very little chance of dying of dysentery. We're going on vacation. Yes, a different type of vacation that most, but still, an optional vacation. So, I don't buy into this reasoning.

Boycotting is a great idea!! So I'm boycotting this thread!!
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Re: BOYCOTT THE BURN
Sorry about the cross-posting, but I think the idea deserves some thought, and not just in the ticket forum. I believe that the ticket shortage, and figuring out how to deal with it, is a huge threat to the nature of the event. It's not about punishing the Org, since they've already been paid, nor is it about tearing down the event, or protesting the org, whom I think tried their best, and just didn't realize how it would turn out. Having attended for a few years in a row, and understanding the nature of the organization and who runs it, I think it's up to the community to figure out a way to get the scalpers out of the system, since the organization, in spite of their best efforts, are unlikely to come up with a working solutions. Besides, isn't doing it for yourself what Burning Man is about?
It's an idea about taking the profit motive out of the event for scalpers. If, and yes it's a big if, demand for re-sale tickets dropped enough that the scalpers wouldn't make a high enough return to justify their efforts, they would see the event as being too risky to continue buying up as many tickets as they could. Right now, they are counting the money they think they'll make, and expecting the Burner community to act like any other concert go-er. I'm suggesting you don't.
I don't know if it lends any credibility or not, but I didn't put in for tickets this year, because I needed a year off. I'm not complaining about not getting a ticket and didn't try to get one, but I am very concerned for the future of the event. So, that's my thought process.

Dealing with it- Realizing there is not enough ticket so you have to options 1. Work your ass off to find one or wait till the very last min and buy one from someone who had plans fall through or B. Just not go. It is not the end of the world. There will be next year. I had to miss NYE in NYC cause of a snow storm yes i planned and saved but it just did not work. Some time shit happens and things suck.
Boycott is protesting.

Re: BOYCOTT THE BURN
I think there are far more productive methods of pushing change than boycotting an event or organization. I think what you meant actually was...boycott scalpers not boycott the burn.

Oh great, now we'll see a lot of people who simply didn't win tickets claiming they're "boycotting" the event.
