Gmail Invites...

Post by theBrooke » Fri Sep 17, 2004 12:04 pm

I was looking for one yesterday, and got bombarded! I have one or two I could part with... Need one?

1gb of free storage (yes 1 GIG), it organizes your emails into conversations (berry cool), and you have a search bar just like google that goes through your email... no more searching for old emails.

I've had mine one day, and i love it.

Once you sign up random people get more invites, maybe you could post em here... I'm sure more than 2 of you could use an account.

*just a thought*

I love it!
Best thing ever. My only worry is the filter/bigbrother thingy they use for advertising. It scans the body of the email for key words so they can direct advertising to you.
I was stoked to come back from BM with an invite in my old inbox.

LL et. al., I have at my disposal unlimited POP e-mail accounts with 50MB limits that I am willing to give to good homes. They are on my @burningsquid.com account, which is all paid up, and it only seems fair to share. PM me if you want to talk about getting one. No strings attached. No data mining, etc... These are not webmail accounts, so you'll need to have an ISP that will allow you to use outside domain names.

I'm with RebA on the creepy factor at gmail. Fight the powah.

Scammers use Gmail invite as phishing hook

Published: September 15, 2004, 9:41 AM PDT

Scammers have caught on to the allure of Gmail and are using the Google e-mail service for a "phishing" scam to harvest e-mail addresses and passwords.

For the fashion-conscious techie, a Gmail account seems to be a must-have status symbol. The free service, which is not yet widely available, has even provoked people to try to sell their Gmail addresses on eBay.

Phishing schemes commonly involve e-mail requests for information that seem to be from trusted sources such as eBay or Citibank. In this case, the scammers send the phishing e-mail to existing holders of Gmail accounts, offering them the opportunity to invite three or six of their friends to join Gmail. The body of the e-mail reads "I found this e-mail very weird." .....

Citibank is a trusted source? Dang. I almost go apoplectic yelling at those faux homey billboards "If that's the way you feel why do you go in for crooked accounting" everytime I see them. Just one more reason that theCryptofishist is a little too delicate for real life.

Hmm, I thought everyone who wanted one already had one; a quick check says I have 6 available, first come first served.

I also have 6 available. I think they are making a new push to get the accounts out there. I had to wait for a long time before I was given any invites, now some of the people that I gave invites to suddenly have invites to give away themselves.

OK aforceforgood, invite on its way. I tried 450MB a couple of times the other day and failed, but most stuff seems to go through OK.

I think we will all eventually sacrifice our desire for privacy as we see that it brings less value to our lives than the speed and convenience with which we can do things, if we are willing to give up some privacy.

I studied privacy law, such as it is, in law school, and it's not a topic I take lightly. But think: what is it that we most want privacy for? We want privacy to protect stigmatized behavior. If our culture changes so that fewer behaviors are stigmatized, we will need less privacy.

(I'm not talking about governmental privacy issues here, only corporate, such as the situation with google.)

I am happy to be able to do things more quickly and more efficiently using gmail, and I don't care if they scan my emails for adwords, because I don't believe google is in league with the feds or any other law-enforcement agency, and I don't think google data could be acquired by LE agents without a search warrant.

We shouldn't resist data collection, or any other technological change, just because some aspect of it could be used for nefarious purposes. Instead, we should develop the technology but figure out how to contain the bad parts. Otherwise we are never going to get anywhere toward improving the pathetic state of affairs we find ourselves in today on this planet.

Having said all that, I still can't get to my fucking mail because gmail has been down for over a day now.

Really? Maybe you should check into that. I haven't had any trouble with Gmail at all. Did have trouble with one of my Yahoo accounts, but after about a week finally got it straightened out.

Thanks!

Yeah. max attachment size is 10mb, 9 or so plus encoding really, so I guess some stuff I'll still have to split up, there's a very cool splitter called hjsplit that is free, hjsplit.com or email me and I'll send you a copy, it's only 216kb and is so stupid-simple that your grandma could use it if only she weren't afraid that clicking the wrong thing might make the computer explode.

As for the privacy thing, since your email (and everything else on the net) has never been all that secure anyway, I'll take the more efficient and larger sized tool and just continue on with the assumption that everything I write/read on the net is an open book.

I mean really, the internet was developed by the military, do you really believe they don't monitor everything as a matter of course?

This incredible tool, a cornucopia of information, applicable to national defense, buying patterns, financial markets, etc.,etc.,etc., and they just gave it away to the public and never looked at it again?

uh, right.

Oh, you did? I'm sorry then, I didn't mean to wake you from your dream, yes, everything's ok, go back to sleep...

Icepack, thanks for the feedback.

It's not my account that's the problem,
as I'm not even getting to the point of logging in.

But knowing gmail is still up for others gives
me a lot to work with.

Turns out it's a browser issue. I have no problems connecting to gmail using Safari, but using Netscape 7.1 on OSX will not connect.

And that's all the thought I'm going to give it for now.

Thanks again IceP!!!!

Ah. glad to have helped. I usually use Mozilla Firebird (similar to Netscape I guess). I have occasionally found that changing browsers does help with email.

Once at work I was trying to send an email with an attachment with Netscape, and it was taking a long, long time (like 20 minutes or more). I kept retrying it and retrying it. Finally I booted up Explorer and the thing went through in seconds like it was supposed to. No idea why, but was glad to finally get the work done and get out of there.

Sounds like you are running a Mac. I may be headed down that road soon myself at work. Good to know that Safari works better than Netscape. Thank you for the headsup on that one.

oops, hjsplit.com takes you to one of those creepy homepage hijacking search/advertising pages, sorry about that, try freebyte.com instead for lots of cool free stuff including hjsplit.
