BM Tech on Slashdot

Post by b00m3rang » Mon Sep 20, 2004 10:50 pm

I just read an article about someone's wifi/satellite phone booth at the event... http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/0 ... =193&tid=1

Unfortunately the poster couldn't just mention the project in question, they had to bring up the fact that there are photos of naked people... doing their part to give Burning Man a reputation it doesn't deserve and potentially attracting the type of undesirables often discussed on this forum.

Way to go.

With all due respect, I think you're wildly overreacting.

The "includes non-gratuitous pictures of naked people" reference Brad Templeton included in that post was entirely appropriate -- not only did it poke fun at the people who would visit the page in the hope of seeing some skin, it also acted as a warning that the contents were potentially not "work-safe" viewing.

Burning Man has been in the public eye for years, and there are plenty of other mass-media references with much wider reach that focus on sex & drugs. Accusing Brad of attracting "undesirables" is just silly.

Possible, it just seems that every time I see the event in mass media, it's usually, "Look at all the naked people on drugs in the desert." It said "non gratuitous", but then said "that ought to test my server", which made it sound to me like they were just trying to drum up traffic.

Anyway, I hope you're right.

Yes, thats quite a fabrication... not everyone on drugs is naked, and not everyone who is naked is on drugs...

slashdot.org is a popular web site. A _huge_ number of people go to the sites that slashdot refers to.

A _huge_ number.

This is called 'the slashdot effect,' and often causes servers to crash because of too much traffic.

As for your actual point...well, in what way does Burning Man _not_ deserve the reputation as a place where people go around naked?

Am I missing something, or isn't Burning Man about the largest clothing optional event in the country?
