And google "Burning Man Los Angeles" and "Burning Man San Diego". You can usually find FB groups and other sites.

You'll find that there's a lot that's "not green" about the burn. (In essence it's people from all over the world flying and driving to a spot in the desert so they can burn things.) There are a lot of people who green their burns as well, it attracts a wide slice of humanity here. Maybe less wide on the economic level, but in many other ways -- I'm over-explaining again.
Anyway, you'll find a lot of people who get very dramatic about how ungreen the burn is; a good portion are probably those who hate the burn anyway, and use that as a whip. But there's a lot of interesting reuse that goes on as well.

I've been on the forum for about 5 years. Although I'm sure i did an intro at some point, it was a long time ago, and I'm not very active on the boards, so I thought I'd do another.

My name is Tammy. I'm from Ottawa, Ontario.

I first heard about Burning Man back in 2004 from someone I met @ Comstock Rock festival in Nebraska. I've wanted to go ever since. Like a fool, I waited for friends to want to go, but none of them have any interest in it. I finally gave up waiting for someone to go with and made plans to go solo. I've been reading a d planning for a Few years. I really wanted to go this year. I turned 40 in January, and thought it would be a great way to celebrate.

Unfortunately, when the tickets went on sale, I was on a waiting list for surgery. Not knowing when my surgery would be, I decided not to try for a ticket when they went on sale, but to aim for a last minute ticket in the summer. I'm happy to say, that I had my surgery last month (the doctors said it likely wouldn't be until May or June). I had to take 6 weeks off work. Due to this, I no longer have the vacation time or funds to be able to go this year.

So, I'll keep reading and planning, and come hell or high water, I WILL BE A PART OF BURNING MAN IN 2014.

Hello Peyote,
One thing to keep in mind is that doctors do mess up our plans.
Keep your course set on coming and then we will see you.
I wish you good health.

Thanks. I'm feeling great. I go back to work next Tuesday. It's is the longest I've been off work in over 15 years, and I'm bored out of my mind. I'm looking forward to being back.

Thank you :)
Having the surgery, and needing to take so much time off work did mess up my plans for this year. I'm great full to of had it and I know my health will be better, and I'm sure it will enable me to enjoy myself when I finally get there.

theCryptofishist wrote:WTF, I thought Canada wasn't as fucked up as we were about vacation and medical issues...

Depends on where you work here. Our province has very good medical coverage. All the basics are covered, and if someone needs to be off work for an extended period of time, they can get some sort of subsidy. It's geared more for low income households. Where I work, we get 3 weeks of sick leave per year, but it's earned monthly, not in advance. I've had tons of Dr. Appointments and been sick a fair bit over the last year, so I had no sick leave left. We also have short term disability(STD), so we don't qualify for the provincial subsidy. I had to use a combination of vacation and leave without pay to cover my time off. Our STD doesn't kick in for 6-8 weeks, so I would have only been covered for a week:(

My surgery itself was paid for by the province. Unfortunately, that means I had no say in when, where or who performed it, or even what version of the surgery I received (there are 3 types, but the province only covers 1). I didn't even meet my surgeon until I was going into the OR. ... To me, that's pretty fucked up. Also, I had to wait 13 months from being referred, to time of surgery... That's considered fast. When I received the referral, I was told 1 1/2 - 2 years.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Steve, I am from Vancouver and this will be my first burn experience. I have always wanted to go and this year I am making that happen. I cannot wait to let my inhibitions guide me through the playa and meet with all new people. I hope everyone is as excited as I am to learn and have fun. If anyone can suggest some camps I am willing to hear and want to join in order to have the full experience.

Thanks

S.

Hi Steve! :D

Camps vary wildly, from expensive, ambitious, & full service . . . to free camps, intended for socializing . . . to camps of just a few friends, or even just one (you). :) You don't need to have a camp, but you might like one depending on your personality and camping skill level. Camps generally require a bit of work and a fee, and in return, you usually get a few comforts. Camping "alone" means you virtually always have immediate neighbors anyway, but your time is totally your own.

Take a look at the 2013 Theme Camps forum and see if anything looks compatible. If you see something that speaks to you, write them a PM or an email telling them why you like them, and what skills you have.
