RV AWNING QUESTION PLS

Question: (let the snarking begin) I am coming in a vintage airstream and it has a awning rail. What is your experience making a awning and sliding it into the rail for shade at the burn? I am going by myself so this seems to be the best way to do it myself easy. Thinking just to take it down when I leave camp. How do you anchor it down to substain all the wind? And yes I have been surfing here for awhile on this subject. Good idea or bad idea? Just thought I would ask the experts, thx

It seems like it's going to be too much hassle to take it down every time you leave camp; I think if I were you I'd look at just having a well-anchored shade that stays up. Depending on how nice your cool old Airstream is, I might even think about a freestanding shade that wasn't attached to it, but had guy ropes tied to it's bumper and hitch as well as to candy-caned rebar in all the other directions.

I love the idea about using the hitch. I had not thought about that. Great idea. I have a 10 x 10 pop up but those don't work so well I have read, even when reinforced. Anyone know of a small shade structure u can buy online that doesn't cost a fortune and can be put up easy and reinforced? Just looking for something small to put a table and the coolers.I do have the guy ties, pvc etc. Thx!

we use fence T stakes in each corner of 10 x 10 then wrap with saranwrap then duct tape. the wrap keeps the sticky off shade and stakes

I also would probably not want to attach anything to a good trailer (as opposed to a beater trailer used just for the burn).

Since you have the room to transport it consider a monkey hut freestanding near it. Quick and easy to make and set up plus costs less than most commercially made shade structures and is more durable than anything in its price range. I believe I spent under $100 on mine including the heavy duty tarp and bungee balls.

I would think that if you can attach that slide in bead to a tarp securely enough that would work fine. Just dont forget to use poles tall enough that the tarp doesnt drag on your door when you open it.

The wear point is the seam edge against the rail. Flexing due to wind, fabric shrinkage, and alkaline dust wear will eventually cause tears in fabric. Replacing the plastic rod in end pocket with a metal rod will decrease flexing if fit is tight. If using inexpensive tarps with grommets, you might be able to fashion together anchor points with eyebolts and rods... just a random thought.

I would spare the awning on your VINTAGE AIRSTREAM, and set up a 10 x 10 canopy. I, regrettably, did some work on someone's travel trailer, and messing with the awning was lowest on my "I'm cool with" list.
