More importantly, do people selling tickets they bought from BM have to somehow register them in a certain person's name?
Thanks in advance for any informative replies.

Read the FAQ, and read 'ReadMe' announcement on the ticket board, there's plenty of information there.

The main concerns with a physical ticket are:
1) Is it real?
There are not tons and tons of reports of counterfeits, but we do hear about them from time to time. Real tickets are expensive-looking with shiny, smooth iridescent parts that do not flake off (like glitter polish does), are made of slightly stiff paper, have extensive warnings in tiny print on the back, etc. Very official looking. They are shipped in a plain envelope stapled to a packing slip with a Survival Guide and a Fireball or (last year?) a Lemonhead candy. (Those things may be missing when re-sold but if they're present, it's extra convincing.)
2) Was it scalped/stolen and thusly reported to the Ticket team and invalidated? . . . Not that likely. There is a partial list of invalidated tickets available on the ticket site, but it's only partial. Don't buy tickets for higher than face value and that will help.

If a ticket were damaged, you'd need to write ticket support about that and ask their advice.
I can’t find my ticket. I lost my ticket/left my ticket at home and I’m already on my way to Burning Man. What do I do?
If you have lost your ticket or leave your ticket(s) at home you will need to purchase new ticket (s) in order to gain entrance to Burning Man. Please email us immediately at tticketsupport(at)burningman(dot)com with your name and order confirmation number and we will let you know your purchasing options, if there are any.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you are mailing us a request to review your ticketing issue, it must be postmarked by September 30th
I lost my ticket(s), can you replace them?
No. We do not replace lost tickets.
