Registering tickets???

Post by edenassociate » Wed Jul 03, 2013 5:17 pm

I have a friend I'd like to buy a ticket for. It's a trustworthy soul willing to sell a Holiday Ticket for a lil less than what he paid for it. But, I've read that purchasing tickets second hand has registration issues... Do I have to register the tickets I bought directly?

More importantly, do people selling tickets they bought from BM have to somehow register them in a certain person's name?

Thanks in advance for any informative replies.

The tickets of which I speak are all 'hard copies' NOT will-call. Forgot to mention that earlier.

Printed physical/mailed tickets are not registered to a particular person's name. If you've read that purchasing ticket secondhand has registration issues, you may care to take a moment and re-read the info.

Read the FAQ, and read 'ReadMe' announcement on the ticket board, there's plenty of information there.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did read as much info as I could find on ticketing, the information I was looking for was not explicitly stated elsewhere... and I worked with scientists for too long: we like our sh!t explained well before proceeding.
"The (hopefully) All Inclusive List of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Regarding Burning Man Tickets," were my start and stop points before posting here. Thanks for posting the portion of the site where this info could be found.

Onward.

So just to make sure I'm absolutely crystal clear on this: You're saying that a single physical ticket, regardless of how many tickets were in the original order, which is purchased by and mailed to the original owner, then subequently sold by said original owner to a third party (me) and mailed to said third party, does not require any administrative changes? The third party can simply show up without presenting any ID and use that after market ticket without any trouble?

I tried to ascertain this information from the various FAQs and the sticky, but I found them all too vague to answer the question with any real certainty.

A physical ticket not held at Will Call does not require any administrative changes on it or to it, no matter how many times it changes hands. Physical tickets don't have names on them so they can be gifted or re-sold easily.

The main concerns with a physical ticket are:

1) Is it real?

There are not tons and tons of reports of counterfeits, but we do hear about them from time to time. Real tickets are expensive-looking with shiny, smooth iridescent parts that do not flake off (like glitter polish does), are made of slightly stiff paper, have extensive warnings in tiny print on the back, etc. Very official looking. They are shipped in a plain envelope stapled to a packing slip with a Survival Guide and a Fireball or (last year?) a Lemonhead candy. (Those things may be missing when re-sold but if they're present, it's extra convincing.)

2) Was it scalped/stolen and thusly reported to the Ticket team and invalidated? . . . Not that likely, but also technically a risk. There is a partial list of invalidated tickets available on the ticket site, but it's only partial. Don't buy tickets for higher than face value and that will help.

Okay. Thank you very much for the clarification. :)

Hmm. Another question occurs to me. Lets say that, after the afore-mentioned third party purchase, the physical ticket is lost, stolen or damaged. What happens then. Would the order itself not need to be in your name to actually do something about that?

I don't think you can get a lost ticket replaced.

It's in the FAQ.

I can’t find my ticket. I lost my ticket/left my ticket at home and I’m already on my way to Burning Man. What do I do?
If you have lost your ticket or leave your ticket(s) at home you will need to purchase new ticket (s) in order to gain entrance to Burning Man. Please email us immediately at tticketsupport(at)burningman(dot)com with your name and order confirmation number and we will let you know your purchasing options, if there are any.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you are mailing us a request to review your ticketing issue, it must be postmarked by September 30th

I lost my ticket(s), can you replace them?
No. We do not replace lost tickets.

http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php
If a ticket were damaged, you'd need to write ticket support about that and ask their advice.

If your ticket were stolen, you'd want to report it so that the person couldn't use them at the Gate. Some of the bad tickets are listed here:
http://tickets2.burningman.com/info.php?i=4188

If you didn't take note of the number on your aftermarket ticket and do not have a packing slip, reporting one stolen would be difficult to do, but most of the damage would be done already--because stolen tickets are not replaced. Guard them well. Don't stick them on the fridge during a party or leave them in your glove compartment. Make your co-pilot prove they have a ticket before you leave town. Don't leave tickets in the car when you stop for the night.

On a side note, last year I had my ticket sticking out of my visor caddie and when I got to gate and pulled it out to show them, the stub was missing.

While I was trying to find the stub, they scanned the ticket and said "Don't worry about it, your ticket is valid." and let me in.

I taped the stub back on when I got home, so now I have a whole 2012 ticket on my fridge. 8)
