A bit of advice for camp's wanting to attract members. Provide Private Porta Potties, Feed them twice daily, and promise them all the alcohol they can consume. It's a shame we didn't plan that far ahead. Just lost three campers to someone who did.

Terminal Village with the private portos really was a delight. However, showers and communal food really are turnoffs for me. I eat what and when I want, and most shower rigs are overrated.

I hate showers. The damn breeze picks up and there you are in the open. Sponge bath--adequate unto my own needs.

It needs to be dirtier, muddier, hotter, biting insects, colder at night, rainy. Why aren't people telling their friends how fucking awful this whole experience is? I don't get it.

Private porta potties just seems a little shitist, in my opinion. While technically communal dining, I found the atmosphere of the commisary to be quite inviting. We don't have a shower..per se.. but rather a daily group tongue bath or lick en masse.AntiM wrote:Terminal Village with the private portos really was a delight. Actually, the commodification horse will not have left the barn until you can actually sell stuff on the playa. Everybody has always been spending lots of money on camp, shade, art, gifts, fire, art cars, etc. but once through the gate, the commodification principle starts. Though, technically, purchased "pre-playa", the services rendered still counts as part of the transaction..does it not?jkisha wrote:Actually, the commodification horse will not have left the barn until you can actually sell stuff on the playa. Re: Are plug and plays brainwashing the new burners?
I'm not sure I understand your question. Everything you 'buy' to use on the playa is part of a financial transaction-- tents, clothes, food, RV's, fuel, etc., etc. To try and draw any distinction is foolish at best. There could be no first camp, no porta potties, no art cars, etc. and you would have to arrive on playa naked with no supplies or food.TomServo wrote:Though, technically, purchased "pre-playa", the services rendered still counts as part of the transaction..does it not?jkisha wrote:Actually, the commodification horse will not have left the barn until you can actually sell stuff on the playa. Re: Are plug and plays brainwashing the new burners?
When one "purchases" a tent or canopy...or even Rents an Rv, the purchase is usually said and done. In the case of a rental, you sometimes have to cover up the company logo..or are at least encouraged to do so. Maybe any signage at these camps, can simply be covered up! Hey Presto! No more problem!

Re: Are plug and plays brainwashing the new burners?
I don't see any effort made to cover the brand names on the jots, the water trucks, the generators used at first camp, etc., etc. I have never covered the logo on our rental truck either. If its good enough for BMORG it's good enough for me.

Not anymore, No. And its a shame. Seeing the creative work people did with corporate logos was something I always enjoyed. So in the spirit of creativity, I say we do it. Even cross branding, like was done to thunderdome, can be fun.

But that's the whole point, isn't it? You can burn what ever way you want. And so should that same courtesy be extended to everybody else without criticism or lectures about how they should be doing it.TomServo wrote:Not anymore, No. And its a shame. Re: Are plug and plays brainwashing the new burners?
My point, which seems to have been missed here..is Yes, you can burn however you want! And I've ALWAYS said that. But while offering to wipe ones ass for a fee makes great performance art...it REEKS of commercialization. And to those of us who actually were duped into "buying" the principles,it kinda matters.
I love Rebuilt muscle cars from the 60's and 70's even modified ones. While technically art..and in some cases mutated..they are NOT MVs! And the DMVs reply to these applicants has always been..."there are other venues for this type of vehicle."
Get it? The principles of Burning Man are Burning Man's. The principles of Plug & Plays" are Marriotts.
I'm not about to go tearing these camps down..nor would I encourage others to do so. But if it seems to be flying in the face of these principles, I will bitch about it. Everyone here likes to bitch..I can honestly say, at least I know when I'm doing it.

That's all any person can do when finances are limited. Why should someone that can afford a comfy lifestyle on the playa or anywhere else for that matter have to defend, explain or rationalize it to those that can't?TomServo wrote:If your dead set on justifying your comfy lifestyle, I guess anyone will believe their own rational.
