Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
After more than a decade on eplaya, and..after meeting many of you..I must say it's been swell! But the swellings gone down. Some of you, I rightly assumed' are fucktards..others, I was surprised to enjoy your company. Simon (and socks) do what you will.
anything worth doing is worth overdoing..

I miss you Burners so much, and love you so dearly, that sometimes this place just makes me sad.
Still, I come back, listening for the echoes of your voices in the words you post.
Sometimes that helps. Sometimes.

Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
I am sorry, but TomServo is correct by using an apostrophe. It shows ownership, and the purpose is for eplaya. It can be worded as, "the purpose of eplaya". Check it out Miss Fishy and let me know what you think!

Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
Hate to poop on it all Monsieur Sham, but this is one of those occasions where the opposite is true.
It's is a contraction of It is (or it has): It's mine. It's a nice day. Grammer: It's what's for breakfast>
Its is the possessive one: I lost its remote. The day lost its luster when the rain fell. This breakfast sucks. Its flakes have gone all soggy.

Too early for alcohol??

We may need to drag an English major in on this one. I am nearly 100% sure I am right on this.

Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
There is quite a bit of ambiguity on this subject. Some say that delle is right, and others say I am correct. It appears that it changed at some point to deleted the apostrophe. With this said, I am now confused, when I wasn't before.
**************************************************************
Another point to consider is that when we are using nouns (as opposed to pronouns), the "apostrophe -s" form is used quite successfully to cover both the contraction and the possessive: "Jane's (Jane is) going to the meeting, but Bob is carrying Jane's (belonging to Jane) notebook." Why, we might ask, shouldn't "it's" follow the same rule, and serve as both possessive and contraction? It would then be up to the reader to judge what is meant by the context, not a terribly difficult task in most cases.

Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
i not an English major, but a very dear friend who has a PhD in literature and got himself into the habit of correcting my grammar and spelling on occasion would definitely side with fishy and delle on this. It's one of those things he had to correct on me several times until i got it! apparently it's a big joke amongst academic types....
Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
I hate it when they rewrite grammar rules.
You get used to things a certain way and then they tell you it's ok to do it differently.

Delle is correct.
As Tom wrote it, it reads "Looks like eplaya has served it is purpose", which is gibberish.

Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
Sham, your logic is good. Seems to me, we use "Jane's notebook" to differentiate from "Janes", which is the plural of Jane (two or more ladies named Jane).Sham wrote:There is quite a bit of ambiguity on this subject. It is true... we could argue that "its" means two or more items called "it". But "its" is actually a word that includes the possessive without using the apostrophe as in "Jane's notebook". Yes, it is a whole individual word with its own distinct meaning, separate from the general use of the possessive "s".
Language is not entirely rational. Language is always in a state of evolution. For clarity, it seems best to use current convention -- current practice. By that standard, TS wrote gibberish.
In journalism, writers follow a "style book", which contains all the correct current usage. The best known in the US is probably the one published by the Associate Press news agency. Style books are regularly updated. Some big newspapers have their very own style book.
Blah, blah, blah....

Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
I strongly disagree - TS made an error by using an apostrophe incorrectly, yet the meaning of his statement was clear. If it was "gibberish", it would make no sense, yet everyone here knows what he intended to say, otherwise you couldn't all be attempting to correct it while debating the finer points of apostrophe placement. Basically, this has all just become an exercise in pedantic thread-drift.Elliot wrote:For clarity, it seems best to use current convention -- current practice. By that standard, TS wrote gibberish.
edit: can you tell I'm starting to get tired of web-based "grammar shaming"? Can't wait for everyone to start jumping on Unjon or Yggy for not typing in flawless, pre-approved English. "How dare someone make an error on MY web, and not produce output to MY standards!"

Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
I'm still trying to figure out exactly what purpose ePlaya was supposed to serve in the first place. At least (or so rumor has) it has gotten some of it's (or is it its?) denizens laid.
Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
Eric, I agree it was understandable. I understood what he meant. But reading it was like hearing fingernails on the blackboard.
The problem with errors is that they CAN lead to misunderstandings. The example my mother taught me:
A man is to be hanged, but the Governor has just received evidence he may be innocent. So the Governor sends a telegram, then jumps on his horse.
The message he gave to the telegraph clerk: "Hang him not, wait til I arrive."
The message the other clerk gave to the executioner: "Hang him, not wait til I arrive."

Re: Looks like eplaya has served it's purpose
Maybe if the Governor had sent it in plain English there wouldn't have been an issue: "Don't hang him before I arrive".Elliot wrote:A man is to be hanged, but the Governor has just received evidence he may be innocent. So the Governor sends a telegram, then jumps on his horse.
The message he gave to the telegraph clerk: "Hang him not, wait til I arrive."

There is also a vast difference between a comma, which can change the literal meaning of a sentence, and an apostrophe, which just mucks up a word a bit. And now I'm being pedantic as well (as well as starting a sentence with a conjunction, without joining it to something. Oh the humanity).
